He served on the Supreme Court until his death in 1845. Story was chosen as the first Dane Professor of Law at the Harvard Law School in 1829. This collection contains papers and correspondence of Sumner, 1834-1874, including his Harvard Law School diploma, letters relative to speaking engagements, notes of thanks to James B. Syme ( - ) and Asa Homan Waters (1808-1887) for their support during his stand on the Fugitive Slave Law, and copies of letters concerning the opinion of Judge Joseph Story (1779-1845) on copyright laws. Also included are letters from individuals in Santa Fe, New Mexico, concerning the Mexican Emancipation Proclamation of 1829, the Unionism of New Mexicans during the Civil War, and the need for Sumner's help in investigating the sale of territorial archives to private interests by New Mexico governor William Anderson Pile (1829-1889). Request to Judge Story to pass on 2 letters (one to Judge Washington and one to Judge Marshall) relating to Sparks' desire to publish a work on George Washington. Sparks further requests Story to use his influence with Judge Bushrod Washington to allow Sparks access to George Washington's personal papers. Sparks agrees that an article on Judge Marshall's work on the Colonies, and, further, on his other legal productions, should be written and suggests that Story should write it.

Hopkinson family papers 1735-1941
The Hopkinson family was a prominent political family of Philadelphia and Bordentown, New Jersey. Thomas Hopkinson (1709-1751) was a merchant, a lawyer, and a diplomat. Francis Hopkinson (1737-1791), Thomas’s son, was a jurist, author, musician, and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Joseph Hopkinson (1770-1842), Francis’s son, was a Pennsylvania congressman from 1815 to 1819, a federal judge from 1828 to 1842, and author of the anthem Hail, Columbia. Joseph’s son, Oliver Hopkinson (1812-1905), served during the Civil War with the 1st Regiment, Delaware Volunteers and with the 51st Regiment Infantry, Pennsylvania Militia. Covering four generations, the Hopkinson family papers consist principally of incoming correspondence; but there are also outgoing letters, documents, manuscript notes, and printed material. All papers have been bound in volumes, and photostatic copies of most volumes are available to researchers.

Harvard patriotic ode. : Tune, "Rise Columbia." / Composed by Joseph Story, and sung in the College Chapel, June 21, 1798.
This newspaper clipping contains the lyrics to an ode composed by Joseph Story, member of the Harvard College Class of 1798. The ode was sung to the tune of "Rise Columbia" in the College Chapel on June 21, 1798 and the lyrics were published in the Columbian Centinel two days later. In this ode, Story expresses patriotic fervor, praising freedom, liberty, and justice and referring with admiration to George Washington and John Adams, who was then United States President. The poem was written during the early days of what is now known as the Quasi-War with France (also referred to as the Undeclared War with France), a naval war initiated by the French and resulting from their anger with the United States over various causes, including trade agreements and the repayment of debts. Story sided strongly with Adams in his reluctance to engage with the French, joining other Harvard students in signing a petition supporting Adams in his stance both against the French and against domestic critics.

Letters, 1827-1833, to James Brown, the U.S. Foreign Minister to France, 1823-1829, concern foreign affairs and politics. In particular Clay discusses the Louisiana Treaty and its effects on the collection of alien duties from France and the affair at Rio de Janeiro; the re-election chances of John Quincy Adams in 1828; the possible candidacy of John C. Calhoun; Jacksonian politics; the north eastern boundary dispute with Great Britain; the election of 1832 and possible candidacies of John C. Calhoun and Littleton Waller Tazewell; a cholera epidemic in 1832-33; the future abolition of slavery; the financial support of two elderly women; and family news. In a letter to A.W. Stowe, 1837, Clay discusses the ills of slavery and the panic of 1837. In letters to Nathan Sargent, 1838-1846, Clay discusses the prospects of the Whig Party; and mentions Daniel Webster, Martin Van Buren, James K. Paulding, James Cooper, the Webster-Ashburton Treaty, the Tariff of 1842 and the Oregon question. In a letter to Joseph Story, 1845, Clay regrets that Story is retiring from the Supreme Court and expresses concern for the future of the Republic. In a letter to A. Peirse, 1849, Clay discusses the Free Soil question facing President-elect Zachery Taylor, and declines to recommend anyone as governor of California.

Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Draft of a letter from Joseph Story to Harriet, ca. 1801.
A four-page handwritten draft of a letter on two leaves attributed to Joseph Story. The letter is only dated as "Monday afternoon" and is unattributed. In the document, Story responds to a letter from a woman identified only as Harriet that presumably requested their romantic relationship end due to objections from her parents. Story mentions the involvement of Harriet's cousin Pierce as an "obstacle" to their courtship, and describes himself as "your friend, your lover, your bethrothed."
