Papers of Charles P. Sumner, lawyer, Sheriff of Suffolk County (Mass.), briefly the Clerk of the Mass. House of Representatives, and father of U.S. Senator Charles Sumner. The papers contain his letterbooks (1825-39) containing copies of both incoming and outgoing personal and business correspondence, including as sheriff regarding jails and the politics of his position, and accounts for the office; several memoranda books containing extracts and notes on a variety of topics, including politics, sheriff's duties, history, law, and Freemasonry; essays, addresses, and poems written by Sumner; and his receipt book (1806-08)/geometry notebook. The papers also include a few items related to Job Sumner's military service in the Continental Army; Charles Sumner's journal from the end of his junior year at Harvard (1829) and a few essays by him (1830); and letters to and from Charles P. Sumner with Joseph Story and others.

Jurist, politician, and professor of law Joseph Story (1779-1845) was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts on September 18, 1779. He received an AB from Harvard in 1798, an AM in 1801, and an LLD in 1821; he also received law degrees from Brown University and Dartmouth College. In 1802, Story married Mary Lynde Oliver.
