Title:
Papers, [microform], 1864-1919.
Correspondence and notebooks. Two series of correspondence include in-coming letters (1875-1911) of a scientific and professional nature primarily on research in acoustics, fluids and electromagnetism from over 350 scientists, and a second series (Argon correspondence, 1887-1904) consisting chiefly of Rayleigh - Sir James Ramsey letters and Rayleigh - Dewar letters focusing on Rayleigh's discovery of argon; included are some calculations and data readings as well as congratulatory letters following his announcement of the discovery. Notebooks (1864-1919) range from student notes Rayleigh took on topics including hydrodynamics, probability, and mathematics and from William Stoke's lectures on optics, as well as notes which he prepared for lectures on thermodynamics while Cavendish was Professor at Cambridge University and lectures elsewhere on induced currents and magnetism. Experimental notes from his research are on optics, acoustics, magnetism and electricity. Correspondents include: J. Aitken, William Crookes, James Dewar, A. J. Ellis, J. D. Everett, R. E. Froude, Francis Galton, A. R. Hunt, Horace Lamb, Joseph Larmor, Oliver Joseph Lodge, Augustus Edward Hough Love, Arnulph Mallock, Eleuthre Mascart, Alfred Marshall Mayer, Albert A. Correspondence and papers, including laboratory and other notebooks; notes of lectures attended; manuscripts of his published works; notes and papers on astronomy, color and optics, electricity and magnetism, geometry, mechanics and dynamics, molecular physics and gases, the properties of matter and general physics. The most extensive and interesting portion of the correspondence (ca. 160 items, 1859-1879) is with Peter Tait. Maxwell and Tait discuss the problems then current in the foundation of mathematical physics -- quaternions, spherical harmonics, and thermodynamic equations, while also including algebraic conundrums and puns and jokes in mathematical symbolism. Correspondents include: Michael Faraday, Lord Kelvin, Charles Tomlinson, and John Tyndall.

Included is correspondence of Lord Ashbourne, Charles F. Benjamin, S.H.J. Böhme, Henri Bourassa (Canadian M.P.), John Bright, James Bryce, Joseph Chamberlain, W. Bourke Cochran, Sir Charles Dilke, Lord Farrer, W.E. Gladstone, George M. Grant, M.E. Grant-Duff, F. Greenwood, Earl Grey, James J. Hill, Hon. H.G. Joly, James Laister, Lord Lansdowne, Sir John A. MacDonald, Herbert E. Millholen (city editor, NEW YORK EVENING POST), Lord Minto, Lord Morley, Horace Plunkett, Anna P. Pruyn, John M. Robertson, Lord Rosebery, Charles B. Freeman, George Otto Trevelyan, and P. Villari are among the historians who corresponded with Goldwin Smith; their letters comment upon current social and political trends and events, as well as upon their work as historians. Among other correspondents are Charles Francis Adams, the Duke of Argyll, Matthew Arnold, W.J. Ashley, General Lord Bryce (NORTH AMERICAN REVIEW), Andrew Carnegie, Lord Chief Justice Coleridge, D.C. Gilman, General Sir Fred Middleton, Julian Pauncefote, Viscount Peel, and Carl Schurz. There are also some family papers, including journals of Smith's mother, Elizabeth Breton Smith. The collection is primarily professional letters written to Russell, but there are also a few letters from his wife and a few by him. There is also an autobiographical letter written by Russell. Most of the correspondence pertains to the Royal Meteorological Society, snow crystals, dew, frost, hail, fog, etc. Russell had wide-ranging interests, however, and some of his non-scientific concerns appear in the letters.

Alfred Russel Wallace Collection, 1867-1913
Title:
Alfred Russel Wallace Collection 1867-1913
A prime exponent of evolutionary theory in the late nineteenth century, the British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace arrived independently at the theory of natural selection nearly simultaneously with Charles Darwin. The numerous publications that emerged from his extended field excusions into the Amazon Basin and the Malay Archipelago (Indonesia) Wallace resulted in major contributions to evolutionary theory, biogeography, ecology, and ethnography, and made Wallace, by the end of his life, one of the best known naturalists in Britain. A Socialist, social progressive, and Spiritualist, Wallace's distinctive take on evolutionary change differed from the Darwinian mainstream in significant ways. The Wallace Collection is a miscellaneous assemblage of letters written by and to Alfred Russel Wallace, primarily during the last twenty five years of his life. Varied in content, the letters touch on Wallace's views on evolution, Spiritualism, and to a less degree, his progressive social commitments.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

This collection contains mostly entomological material, with much information on the description and identification of particular insects, entomological collections, and the study of entomology in Europe and the United States. In addition, there are materials on medicine and hospitals during the American Civil War, on the Corps of Topographical Engineers, the United States Army, on natural history in the United States, and on the LeConte's family. Some letters are written to President Rutherford B. Hayes and concern the Commissionership of Agriculture, for which LeConte was considered, but not appointed. Letters of John Eatton LeConte and Joseph LeConte are included.

Sargent, Epes, 1813-1880. Papers of Epes Sargent, 1839-1880.
Title:
Papers of Epes Sargent, 1839-1880.
The papers contain an autograph draft and corrected manuscript of "The London Belle, Or Events of a Season," a manuscript poem, and a quotation. Most of the letters pertain to Sargent's work as editor of the Boston Daily Evening Transcript. He regrets the lack of an esprit de corps among editors, praises William A. Wheeler's new edition of Webster's Dictionary and Robert Dale Owen's book on slavery. Spiritualism is a frequent topic and he refers to John Tyndall's attack on it and his own defense. With these is a letter from Sir Thomas Noon Talfourd to Wiley, Long and Putnam discussing the potential for publishing Sargent's play "Velasco" in England and an engraving of Sargent.
