Virginia. Land Office

After the conclusion of the French and Indian War, the British government issued a proclamation designed to prevent clashes between the settlers and Indians. This proclamation of 1763 forbid settlement west of the Alleghany mountains.

The Virginia Land Office is the umbrella under which all of the records associated with land patents, surveys of unappropriated lands, and land grants are organized. In addition, records pertaining to weights and measures, public buildings, and immigration are included, as the duties for these offices were added to the responsibilities of the Register of the Land Office in the mid-nineteenth century.

Virginia Land Office was established in 1779 by the General Assembly. The agency was headed by a Register appointed by joint ballot of both houses of assembly. The Register was responsible for implementing the legislation relating to obtaining waste or unapproriated lands. Upon processing the fee that was paid to the Treasurer, the Register entered a warrant authorizing a surveyor to lay off the land. The Register then examined and filed the papers and issued the land grant.

The Land Office was also responsible for processing of applications for grants of bounty lands given by the state as partial compensation for service in times of military conflict. Although men who served in the French and Indian War were eligible for bounty lands, the area where the land was available was closed by the Proclamation of 1763, and it was not until 1779 when the bounty was actually awarded. Bounty land warrants were issued until 1858, when the program was discontinued.
