This series consists of photographs that document the Attorneys General of the United States. Attorneys General are documented through photographic copies of paintings and photographic portraits. In addition, some of the images show various activities of the Attorneys General, including press conferences, meetings, oaths of office, and banquets. Many of the photographs were used as part of a commemorative book, "200th Anniversary of the Office of the Attorney General", which highlights the history of the Office of Attorney General and the celebration of the anniversary on September 22, 1989. A copy of this book is included in this series in addition to another Department of Justice book,"Attorneys General of the United States, 1798-1985", which used many of the photographs. Not every Attorney General from the time period of the series is represented. A few images contain multiple Attorney Generals.

Manuscript legal brief of William Pinkney [pertains to a law of 1777 regarding a disputed election of Jones versus Hall], undated (missing pages 1-4). The dispute appears to be a court's reversal of an earlier decision to certify a ballot. The legal brief, probably written in Pinkney's hand, is very detailed and contains many corrections. It concludes "It is evident, however, that it is not the Election which is objected to, but the judgment of the Magistrates. But over that if the Election is not incurably defective we have no control over by the Act of 1777."

The collection contains a manuscript draft of "Craven notice" posted in Baltimore against John Neal who had refused Pinkney's challenge of a duel to vindicate the memory of Pinkney's father whom Neal had slandered in his book "Randolph." The collection also contains manuscripts of the poem "The Lady's song" about the death of a loved one; a poem beginning "I know that perfect self-esteem...;" and a facsimile of a portion of "Rodolph." In correspondence (typed and photocopies) Pinkney acknowledges an error in conduct towards Captain Charles G. Ridgely, reports for military duty, sends poems for publication, requests to send written deposition rather than travel to a court-martial, and submits papers in a larceny case. Georgiana McCausland Pinkney's album contains poems by Pinkney, magazine photographs of Pinkney and his father, verses attributed to T.H. Chivers, and a clipping of an article by Lewis Chase on Chivers. There are also photocopies of a clemency appeal to the Governor of Maryland, Pinkney's obituary, a Pinkney crest, and an 1828 new year's greeting to subscribers of The Marylander. Modern correspondence discusses Thomas Ollive Mabbott's and Frank Pleadwell's biography of Pinkney and the possibility that a poem in Pinkney's album signed "C" is by T.H. Chivers.

There are also one or two letters each from George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Winfield Scott, Justus Erich Bollman, Charles James Fox, and the Baron von Steuben, as well as a brief third person note from Louis Philippe or one of his brothers. Topics include United States politics and foreign affairs; the French Revolution and its victims; the First Republic; the imprisonment of Lafayette at Olmutz and possible American diplomatic efforts to release him; the Whiskey Rebellion; the War of 1812, particularly the invasion of Canada; travel in Poland and Austria in 1794, and England in 1840; the July Revolution of 1830 and France under Louis-Philippe; trade in America and India, and family and personal matters. People mentioned include Maria Cosway, Madame de Corny, John Trumbull, Rufus King, Isaac Brock, Abraham Van Vechten, and Peter Buell Porter. In addition the collection contains an engraving of Jefferson with a vignette of him showing the Declaration to John Adams and Franklin; a 1786 indenture for land in New York; autographs of John Lothrop Motley and Philip Livingston; and the Order of Exercises from an 1864 July 4 celebration in Red Hook, N.Y. The collection also contains a Robert Spring forgery of a George Washington order on the Bank of Baltimore.

Papers of Henry Dearborn, Secretary of War and commander of the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. Dearborn's journal describes the Sullivan Campaign of 1779 when Loyalist and Indian forces were routed at Elmira, N.Y. Poems, written by Dearborn, follow his journal entries. Letters from Thomas Jefferson concern Indian jurisdiction and negotiations for the Louisiana Purchase. Other correspondents include John Armstrong, Joel Barlow, John Breckinridge, Henry Clay, William Eustis, James Madison, James Monroe, and William Pinkney. Extensive official reports to Dearborn relate troop advances and failures during the War of 1812. Dearborn's dismissal as Army commander is explained in a written addendum. Papers of the Pinkney (or Pinckney) family, consisting chiefly papers of William Pinkney (1764-1822), his brother Ninian Pinkney (1776-1825), and Ninian's son, Bishop William Pinkney (1810-1883). Included is an invitation to a dinner to honor William Pinkney upon his return from England after serving as U.S. commissioner to negotiate claims under Jay's Treaty. Material relating to Ninian Pinkney concerns his position as clerk of the executive council of Maryland and relates to expenditures for militia expenses, 1813, and to the Baltimore and Potomac Canal Survey, 1823-1824.
