Son of Simon and Sarah (Marston) Dearborn, born in Hampton, New Hampshire, February 23, 1751. Became a physician; fought at Bunker Hill; taken prisoner while on Arnold expedition to Quebec; was exchanged and fought throughout revolution, after which he settled in Kennebec County, Maine was in Congress, 1793-1797; in 1801 Jefferson appointed him Secretary of War. 1809 resigned to become collector of port of Boston, January, 1812, Major General, U.S.A. His incompetence caused havoc in Lake regions. Honorably discharged June 15, 1815. In 1822 went as minister to Portugal. Married three times: Mary Bartlett, 1771: Dorcas Osgood Marble, 1780: Sarah Bowdoin, 1813. Died, June 6, 1829. (Dict. Am. Biog.) (Blue index cards)

Dearborn (1751-1829) was an American soldier in the Revolutionary War, 1775-1783, Col. on Washington's staff at Yorktown, 1781, Congressman, 1793-1797, and Secretary of War, 1801-1809. He also served as Maj.-Gen. of the Army, 1812-1813, and U.S. Minister (Ambassador) to Portugal, 1822-1824. The Clarke Historical Library has his complete manuscript collection on microfilm and his published war journals.

Henry Dearborn was a soldier, U.S. Secretary of War, and a congressman from Massachusetts. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson appointed him inspector of fortifications and superintendant at West Point. Fort Adams was created after the settlement of the boundary between the West Florida and Mississippi Territories in 1798.

Henry Dearborn (1751-1829), physician, statesman, and soldier, was born on 23 February 1751 in Hampton, N.H., the son of Simon and Sarah Marston Dearborn. He attended public schools, studied medicine in Portsmouth, N.H., and opened his medical practice in Nottingham, N.H., in 1772. Dearborn fought in both the American Revolution and the War of 1812, and was Secretary of War under Thomas Jefferson. From 1793 to 1797 he was a representative in the United States Congress, and from 1822 to 1824 he was minister to Portugal.

Dearborn married three times and had one child, Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn (1783-1851), by his second wife, Dorcas Osgood Marble Dearborn. Henry Dearborn died on 6 June 1829 in Roxbury, Mass.
