Title:
Diary of Louisa H.A. Minor [manuscript], 1855-1866.
The diary contains a weekly account of the activities of Minor, her friends and family including church services attended, with the text for each sermon, visits and visitors, family and neighborhood news, weather and social events. She quotes poetry and occasionally composes her own, and there is also a lengthy list of her reading. Topics include: trips to the Richmond state fair in 1857 and 1860; activities at the University of Virginia, particularly celebrations of the Jefferson and Washington Societies; and, a lecture by Edward Everett on "The character of Washington." Of interest are mentions of freed slaves emigrating to Liberia and accounts of deaths and hardships there'; a note on the funeral of artist John Toole; and, an account of a young relative's successful efforts to go as a missionary to Liberia with Bishop John S. Payne. Most Civil War news is indirect but she does describe cooking for Ewell's troops when they came through the county and entertaining the general in her parlor. She also mentions a Christmas dinner given to soldier patients at the Delevan Hospital, Custer's diversionary raid on Rio Hill, February 1864, Federal troops passing through Albemarle County in March 1865, and the brief occupation of her home, an event that forced several family members to hide out in the woods. She also describes the difficulties of the first year of Reconstruction and expresses her bewilderment over the insubordination and disloyalty of former slaves. With the diary is a bequest 1871 April 23, from Mary W. Anderson, her foster mother.

Title:
Memoirs of George Walter Clements Blatterman [manuscript], ca. 1902.
Blatterman recalls life in London, mentioning visits of Washington Irving (for whom Charlotte Elizabeth Blaettermann wrote out the printer's copy of the Sketch Book), Richard Rush, George Ticknor, and John Randolph. After the family's arrival at the University of Virginia, he mentions visits with Jefferson, the Madisons, Monroe, Lafayette, Edgar Allan Poe, and many local families. Incidents recorded include the death of George Blaettermann and defrauding of his family by a German preacher. A special section records his recollections of Thomas Jefferson including his foreign language instruction by George Blaettermann. A lengthy section deals with Captain Uriah P. Levy, a subsequent owner of Monticello, his family, particularly his son Thomas Jefferson Levy, and local attitudes toward them. With the memoirs are photocopies of family daguerreotypes and a diploma awarded to Blaettermann.

Title:
Willis H. Woodley supplemental report to the Faculty [manuscript], 1836, Oct.
Woodley reports that he has visited each of the Hotels and found that the bill of fare was generally adhered to. He notes that the bed in Mr. Holman's dormitory at 30, East Lawn is "too short by ten or twelve inches" and has not yet been replaced by the hotelkeeper. In 16 and 18 East Lawn, the sheets and pillow cases are dirty and "the occupants were confident that they had not been changed within the fortnight." Woodley states that the hotelkeepers seem to disregard the enactments setting the end of breakfast service. He lists nine students who "have failed to comply with the enactment requiring them to put up their signs on the door." Woodley then gives a list of assessments made "for alterations, injuries, etc. on the property of the University," most of which are for [the replacement of?] window glass; he notes the making of a coffin for Mr. Gray and states that a hole has been burned in the floor of 46 East Range. Woodley concludes by noting that the repairs on Pavilion I have not been completed because of the inability "to get the proper workmen."

Blackford, William Matthews, 1801-1864. William Matthews Blackford diaries [manuscript], 1849-1864.
Title:
William Matthews Blackford diaries [manuscript], 1849-1864.
Blackford's diaries contain a detailed description of life in Lynchburg, Virginia, during the 1850s and the Civil War until his death in 1864. He records activities of his friends, associates, and immediate family as well as the related Davis and Minor families, particularly University of Virginia professors John Staige Davis and John Barbee Minor. He describes his reading, careers as editor of the "Lynchburg Virginian," postmaster, and cashier for the Exchange Bank of Lynchburg; his attendance at St. Paul's Episcopal Church; and acquaintance with several well-known contemporaries including George Washington Bethune, John C. Calhoun, John Hartwell Cocke, Alexander Galt, Matthew Fontaine Maury, and Winfield Scott. The volumes for the Civil War years are especially lengthy with information on banking in the Confederacy, tobacco speculation and inflation. There are lengthy second hand narratives of battles and political and diplomatic events as reported by the papers or his five sons serving in the Confederate Army. The diaries also contain eulogies for his father, Benjamin Blackford and his older daughter Lucy Landon Blackford Davis.
