The main correspondent in this series of letters is Henry Christian Mayer (1821 Jan. 10 - 1846 Mar. 1), the son of Baltimore residents, Charles F. (Charles Frederick) Mayer (1795-1864) and Susan Theresa Pratt Mayer. Henry Mayer was a farmer and country lawyer in Westfield, Chautauqua County, New York. He previously attended Harvard College, though he did not graduate. He married Mary Louisa McCulloh Mayer (b1821-), whose father was James W. (James William) McCulloh (1789-1861), brother - James William McCulloh, Jr. (b.1827-), and her sister - Isabella Williamson McCulloh Greene (1825-1870).
