Papers of the Gregory and Whitmore families, 1846-1997 (bulk 1900-1923).

This addition to the papers of the Gregory and related Whitmore families consists primarily of letters from Mrs. Sue [Mary Susan] Gregory Whitmore to her son Harry Gregory Whitmore, a student at the University of Virginia and teacher at various colleges. The letters chiefly convey news of family, friends and local happenings (and scandals) in Parnassus, Va., with occasional references to national events. Topics of interest include her reading; railroad work in Augusta County; Harry Whitmore's student life at the University of Virginia with many references to Virginia professors; and farming in Augusta County with references to trouble with hired hands. University of Virginia faculty and administrators mentioned include E.A. Alderman, Noah K. Davis, Francis P. Dunnington, Charles W. Kent, John W. Mallet, James M. Page, John S. Patton, William E. Peters, William B. Stone, William M. Thornton, and Christopher Wright. There are passing references to the African-Americans in Augusta County including their vote in the election of 1900; the death of her husband from tuberculoses; the St. Louis Worlds Fair; Southern votes and the election of 1904; the 1912 women's suffrage fight in the Virginia legislature; prohibition; outbreaks of contagious diseases including the great flu epidemic; and World War I. Letters from Samuel L. Whitmore to his brother Harry concern his chiropractic career, medical schooling, financial problems and divorce. The collection also contains the 1915 travel journal of Harry Whitmore kept on a trip to California via the Panama Canal with a return home through the Canadian Rockies together with letters and postcards related to his trip. The collection also contains receipts; photographs; and a scrapbook of the 1883 Niagara Falls Reunion of the Fifth Virginia Infantry and the 28th New York Volunteers who had faced each other at the Battle of Cedar Mountain.
