Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American author, poet, and critic. In 1834 Poe married his cousin Virginia, who was not quite fourteen at the time, and began seriously seeking a means of supporting "his family." William Cabell Rives was the son of Robert and Margaret Jordan (Cabell) Rives. He was educated at Hampden-Sydney College and at the College of William and Mary where he graduated in 1809.
