The papers pertain to thornton's career as a University of Virginia professor of applied mathematics and engineering and as chairman of the faculty. A. Alderman's plans for the University, the establishment of a separate Department of Engineering, a history of botanical plantings on the grounds, curriculum reform, increasing enrollment, scholarships, and engineering courses. There is also a manuscript of a textbook on "High School Algebra" together with a 17-page typescript of the first portion; a manuscript entitled "Generalized Arithmatic," possibly an earlier version of the high school algebra book; and a manuscript in a casebound notebook entitled "Elementary Lessons in the Infintesimal Calculus, for Students of Engineering." Other academic material includes exams, notebooks, and loose notes covering math and engineering courses. In addition there are addresses and essays on a variety of subjects, generally related to education, and a personal account book of household expenses, 1896-1897. An account book contains a diagram and figuraes for an unidentified bridge, and a dial slide rule calculator. Four typescript lecture notebooks including on on "Railroad curves and earthwork" were believed to have been prepared by Thornton and subsequently used by John L.
