The papers contain an essay "The devout natural philosopher; a brief notice of the life and work of Francis H. Smith, by one of his old students, William M. Thornton." The papers also contain a letter from President John Lloyd Newcomb, 1935 September 12, regarding Thornton's funeral; a list of [Thornton's?] articles in the University of Virginia Alumni Bulletin; and a copy of a Thornton letter, 1907 April 11 to his son-in-law, Dr. Charles Ross Thurman.
