The American Antiquarian Society was founded in Worcester, Mass., in 1812, largely through the efforts of Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831). The Society's original stated purpose was to "encourage the collection and preservation of the Antiquities of our country, and of curious and valuable productions in Art and Nature [that] have a tendency to enlarge the sphere of human knowledge." AAS from its inception attempted to be national in its collecting and its membership, which is by election.
The American Antiquarian Society's principal activity has been the creation and maintenance of a library. During the nineteenth century, the collections included archaeological, ethnographic, and historical objects as well as printed and manuscript material. However, at the close of the nineteenth century the decision was made to concentrate on printed and manuscript materials usable for the study of American history and culture in the period through 1876. Subsequently, almost all of the museum objects were transferred to other institutions, notably the Peabody Museum at Harvard University and the Smithsonian Institution.

Farber, Daniel, 1909-. Photograph collection, 1954-1991, 1970-1989 (bulk dates).
Title:
Photograph collection, 1954-1991, 1970-1989 (bulk dates).
Collection of over 700 photographs taken by Daniel Farber, several sets of note cards decorated with photos taken by him, and a set of compact discs with photos by Farber and others. About 570 of the photos are of gravestones and the rest are either nature studies or portraits. The gravestone photos are black-and-white, while the others are color. Most of the gravestones are located in New England, but other eastern seaboard states are also represented, including Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North and South Carolina. Also, most of the gravestones are from the 18th century, although there are also some from the 17th and early 19th centuries. Most of the nature photos are from New England. The portraits are of family and friends. Most of the photos are titled, dated, numbered, and signed by Farber on the back; a few are also signed on the front. The collection also includes some note cards printed with photographs taken by Farber. Nature scenes decorate some cards, whiles gravestones decorate others. In addition, the collection includes the compact disc set "Early American Gravestones: The Farber Collection," issued by the American Antiquarian Society. This set contains almost 15,000 images of early American gravestones from Nova Scotia to Georgia, although focusing on Connecticut and Massachusetts. The photos were taken by Daniel and Jessie Lie Farber, Harriette Merrifield Forbes, and Dr. Ernest Caulfield. The index to the set is found on one of the CDs.

Worcester Association of Mutual Aid in Detecting Thieves. Records, 1795-1976.
Title:
Records, 1795-1976.
The records of the Worcester Association of Mutual Aid in Detecting Thieves, 1795-1976, consist of three volumes containing minutes of meetings, and two folders of miscellaneous material. The minutes span the period 1795-1938 and detail the annual gathering of members for the purposes of electing members to the Standing and Pursuing Committees and attending to the Treasurer's Reports. Included are the constitution and bylaws, directories of members, continually revised rules of admission to the organization. The volumes are largely concerned with financial matters, and contain only infrequent mention of the actual pursuit of thieves and recovery of property. The later meetings were held for social purposes at the Worcester Club. The miscellaneous papers, 1795-1976, include copies of the constitution, both mss. and printed; several membership lists; five bank deposit books; the Act of Incorporation of 1905; printed dinner menus; and a lengthy typescript poem, 1920, by Samuel Bayard Woodward (1853-1946) concerning the leadership of Eben Francis Thompson. There is also an address delivered by Nathaniel Paine (1832-1917) in 1906 containing brief biographies of early members and a history of the organization; a group of letters written by several members, 1940-1941, in answer to a questionnaire (also included) pertaining to a proposed disbandment of the Association; and a document officially transferring funds to the American Antiquarian Society in 1976.

Carnegie Corporation of New York. Study of Arts of the United States. Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1956-1961, n.d.
Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1956-1961, n.d.
In 1956, the University of Georgia approached Carl Zigrosser to participate in a Carnegie Corporation grant to "survey, collect and distributematerials for the study of art in the United States." The University was asking historians to act as specialist in an arts discipline, write an essay covering their area and submit a list of the 250 most important historic and aesthetic images. Zigrosser was asked to be the consultant for 19th century graphic arts (to include drawings). The goal was the creation of large slide sets featuring the most important examples of American art. Early correspondence was with Martha Davidson and Lamar Dodd. Later letters are also from William Pierson and Lloyd Goodrich. The correspondence covers the intricacies of Zigrosser's approach as an art historian, and the mundanities of expense accounts. Copies of bills and receipts, and carbons of letters and preliminary lists reflect the locations and collections Zigrosser went to to generate his final selection. Private collectors approached by Zigrosser include: Harry T. Peters,Harold H. Kynett, Gilbert McClintock, Irving Olds, and Henry Shattuck. Dealers included Kennedy Galleries and The Old Print Shop. Institutions that contributed images were the New York Historical Society, American Antiquarian Society, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Zigrosser's list of 19th century graphics and his essay were warmly received and used as models within the project. In 1958, with his section wrapped-up, Zigrosser was enlisted to take over the 20th century garphics as well, that project having become stalled. Working from an existing list, Zigrosser resurrected the failing project and submitted his essay for that discipline. The end of the project is represented by newspaper clippings and flyers describing the project, and correspondence concerning the publication of the essays.

Title:
Emily Ellsworth Ford Skeel papers 1871-1958
Emily Ford Skeel (1867-1958) was a bibliographer, editor and philanthropist. Her parents were Gordon Lester Ford (1823-1891), a railroad and real-estate magnate and collector of Americana, and Emily Fowler Ford (1826-1893), a poet. Like her older brothers Worthington Chauncey Ford (1858-1941) and Paul Leicester Ford (1865-1902), Skeel did historical research and compiled bibliographies on Parson Weems and Noah Webster. She and her husband, Roswell Skeel, Jr. (1866-1922), contributed time and money to various organizations and causes concerned with social reform or environmental conservation. Collection consists of correspondence, notes, scrapbooks, photographs, and printed matter relating to Skeel's professional and personal activities. General correspondence, 1871-1958, includes letters about her bibliographic and editorial work as well as letters of Skeel and her husband with family and friends, librarians, archivists, and academics. There is correspondence with various organizations and societies concerned with social and educational issues and with the Single Tax measures of Henry George. Personal and family correspondence, 1871-1950, contains correspondence with family members, relatives and personal friends, and other correspondence that is personal in nature. Financial and household correspondence, 1913-1946, consists of letters with banks and stockbrokers, general business letters and correspondence from Skeel's years in Martha's Vineyard. Bibliographic notes are made up of material Skeel gathered for her work on Webster and original manuscript of the Webster bibliography. Minor series includes notes about Weems, memoranda, writings, student notebooks, personal and family papers with genealogical information, commonplace books, accounts and account books, and maps. Also, scrapbooks compiled by Emily and Roswell Skeel; photographs of family members and residences, prominent people and various other subjects; and printed matter, such as clippings, pamphlets, prints and ephemera.

Thomas, Isaiah, 1749-1831. Papers, 1748-1874.
Title:
Papers, 1748-1874.
This comprehensive collection of personal and business papers reflects Thomas' meticulous attention to financial details, irascible personality in dealing with business associates, and paternal concern for his extended family. The majority of correspondence deals with business affairs, much of it with his partner of many years, Ebenezer Turell Andrews. Thomas was also active in the Freemasons and in various historical and scholarly societies, and there is correspondence generated by these interests. Uncatalogued material includes business records and materials relating to "History of Printing in America" (both the 1810 and 1874 editions). Uncatalogued personal papers include miscellaneous legal documents and wills, receipts for both Thomas and his son, and numerous articles submitted to Thomas for publication. His diaries, which are pedestrian, illustrate his careful record keeping and concern for his family's well being. They, and his correspondence, document his broad social contacts and constant devotion to the American Antiquarian Society.

Lapham, Increase Allen, 1811-1875. Antiquities of Wisconsin, 1850-1855.
Title:
Antiquities of Wisconsin, 1850-1855.
In May 1850, Lapham was sponsored by the American Antiquarian Society to conduct a survey of the prehistoric animal-shaped mounds which he discovered throughout much of Wisconsin. In this manuscript he provided detailed and scientific information on the location, shape and occasionally the human remains and artifacts found within these mounds. In addition, he offered analysis of the ancient Indian civilizations, commenting upon their customs and character, as charted phrenologically. Lapham's survey, begun in May 1850 and completed in July 1852, was published in 1855 by the Smithsonian Institution. The Antiquities of Wisconsin appeared as volume VII of the series "Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge." This publication, in the AAS library, contains 55 plates and 61 wood engravings (executed by Lapham). There are, however, 53 plates and 97 engravings listed, but not included in the manuscript. (See also Lapham letters & sketches in the AAS Archives, especially the 1850s.) Samuel Foster Haven (1806-1881), librarian of AAS from 1837 to 1881 examined and corrected Lapham's manuscript. In May 1853, Lapham was elected a member of AAS.

Inventory of the Samuel Erson Asbury Papers Texas MSS 00044., 1872-1960
Title:
Inventory of the Samuel Erson Asbury Papers 1872-1960
Educated and professionally employed as an agricultural chemist and researcher in fertilizer and feeds, Samuel Erson Asbury's fame rests primarily with his extensive research into Texas history, particularly his discovery of little known primary resources regarding the Texas Revolution, including those concerning Jonas Harrison, John A. Williams, and the journal of Juan Nepomuceno Almonte. Samuel Erson Asbury was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on September 26, 1872, the son of Felicia Swan (Woodward) and Sidney Monroe Asbury. In 1889, Asbury enrolled in North Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical College in Raleigh, receiving his B.S. in chemistry in 1893. Employed as an instructor at the college, Asbury earned his M.S. by 1896. Between 1895 and 1904, Asbury worked alternately with the North Carolina Experiment Station, the State Chemist's office in Richmond, Virginia, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, and the State Chemist of Tennessee. On November 1, 1904 he accepted a position in College Station, Tex., as Assistant State Chemist with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station on the campus of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. From 1905 to 1915 his work required him to travel throughout East Texas as a fertilizer inspector for Dr. G. S. Frap, the State Chemist. During his business trips, Asbury spent his spare time getting acquainted with the local old-timers, many of them former participants in the Texas Revolution, Civil War, and/or the Reconstruction. Asbury's chief historical interest lay in the Texas Revolution, and he spent much of his time writing an opera, or musical-drama review to illustrate it. Asbury spent the remainder of his career with the experiment station employed in the analysis of fertilizer and feed until his retirement in 1945. Samuel Erson Asbury died in Bryan, Tex. on January 10, 1960 at the age of 89. The Samuel Erson Asbury Papers consist of research materials, correspondence, mainly original contemporary letters and copies of the older correspondence, Asbury's writings and copies of state and national documents, held in eight boxes and one map case drawer occupying approximately twelve linear feet of shelf space. Asbury's broad range of interests is reflected in the variety of topics contained in these papers. Foremost among them are the files of correspondence, the older materials chiefly copies, copies of historical documents, articles and research notes concerning various aspects of Texas history. Also included in the Asbury papers are: articles, short stories, essays, plays, poetry, and a Texas Revolution opera written by Asbury; research notes and correspondence on the cultivation of roses and the growing of plants without soil; articles written about Asbury; correspondence with family members; general correspondence; and photographs of Asbury, his family and friends, and North Carolina A&M College.

Title:
Office of Publications Book Files, 1973-1998.
The records in this series relate to the publication of several books and exhibition catalogues from 1973-1998, but predate the formation of a formal publications department. These files primarily contain first drafts of essays published in the catalogues and correspondence, invoices, and purchase orders from writers, editors, printers, and others involved in the creation of these publications. There is also correspondence regarding reproduction rights for the use of images from outside of the Clark Collection. Much of the correspondence is addressed to Mary Jo Carpenter in the Office of Membership and Public Relations and Mary Ann McSweeny in the Curatorial Office. Material relating to the 1998 publication of Farewell to the wet nurse: Etienne Aubry and images of breast-feeding in eighteenth-century France and the 1997 publication of English, Irish, and Scottish silver at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute account for approximately half of all the material in this series. The remaining files relate to an assortment of Clark publications from the 1970s through 1990s.

Business records, 1860-1906.
Two of the octavo volumes are pocket diaries for 1862 and 1869. Though there are notations regarding daily activities, most of the information relates to business. They list expenses, both personal and business, the cost of coal, 1860-1862, and insurance policies. There are also notes on employees and business appointments. The third octavo volume is a Time Book, 1868-1878, listing various employees and the days and hours they worked. Rarely is the salary listed. One oversize folder and ten folio account books contain business transactions for 1875-1906. These include records of orders and charges for jobs provided by Hamilton for many local businesses, churches, schools, and organizations. Also noted are expenses incurred by Hamilton for labor and materials. Included in these items are miscellaneous advertisements for printing supplies, examples of Hamilton's printing work, and scrap papers used for financial figuring.

Streeter, Thomas W. (Thomas Winthrop), 1883-1965. Papers, 1920-1965.
Title:
Papers, 1920-1965.
This collection consists of 20 boxes of Streeter's papers, 1920-1965, comprised of 4 boxes of correspondence, 3 boxes of donations lists, and 13 boxes representing a Catalogue of his American Library. Included in the correspondence is information on Streeter's friendship with Henry Raup Wagner (1862-1957) of Berkeley, Calif., a noted bibliographer and authority on early explorations of the West. The letters refer mainly to the buying and selling of Americana between the two collectors and from booksellers, such as Edward Emory Eberstadt (1883-1958) of New York City. There are occasional comments on the distress of the Great Depression and the Presidential leadership of Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945), as well as much family news. Also included is Streeter's correspondence with Lawrence Counselman Wroth (1884-1970), librarian of the John Carter Brown Library, Providnece, R.I. Their letters contain many references to Streeter's wish to extend his work on Joseph Sabin (1821-1881) and his enlistment of Wroth's help. There are also comments on the proceedings at the meetings of a number of historical societies. The boxes of Donations contain lists of books and other items sent to various societies and libraries from 1940 to 1965, such as the American Antiquarian Society, University of Virginia, Yale University, and the Library of Congress. These include appraisals made by Eberstadt and others. Streeter's Catalogue of his collection is organized by subject in alphabetical order and includes correspondence with many dealers, bibliographers, and librarians at institutions, lists of his acquisitions, exhibition lists, assessments and appraisals, loan lists, several auction catalogues, pamphlets pertaining to a particular subject in his collection, his and others' "want" lists, many photostats of acquisitions and sale items, and photographs of portraits.

Stoughton, Sarah Josephine, 1848-1871. Diaries, 1869-1871.
Title:
Diaries, 1869-1871.
The diaries contain entries from February 1869 through January 1871, just prior to Sarah Josephine Stoughton's death as a result of tuberculosis. In the earlier volume, February 1869 to November 1870, she discussed close friends and family members and recorded her daily activities. They generally included visits made and received, letters written and received, domestic chores performed, etc. She often discussed the state of her health and religious observations, especially as her death neared. She occasionally considered political issues of the day (women's suffrage, in particular) and such events as the flooding of the region in October 1869. On April 24, 1870, Sarah Stoughton received a letter from a friend who visited "Antiquarian Hall" (the American Antiquarian Society) in Worcester, Mass. The diary contains remarks about the statue of Moses which then belonged to the Society. Volume #2 is a second diary of Sarah Josephine Stoughton, 1 January-10 January 1871. The last entry was written seventeen days prior to her death. This diary contains lengthy passages that are more introspective and reveal her attitude toward various relatives, including her father, grandmother, sister Anna Eliza Stoughton (1844-1924) and the latter's fiancé, George Rolland Bliss (1846-1930) concerning Sarah Stoughton's religious feelings, daily annoyances, her occasional sleeplessness, and her thoughts on marital love. According to one entry, she wrote occasionally to earn money. The folder contains a typescript copy of octavo volume #2, several pages from the Stoughton family Bible with genealogical records, and miscellaneous newspaper clippings.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Newton family. Papers, 1795-1870.
Title:
Papers, 1795-1870.
The collection reflects activity of Rejoice Newton and the members of his family during the period 1795 to 1870. Most of the material revolves around Worcester, Cambridge, and Boston, Mass., and consists of eleven diaries written by Levi Lincoln Newton from 1837 to 1843; one folder of his letters and those of other family members from 1835 to 1870; one folio account book of Rejoice Newton from 1823 to 1824, and six folders of his business papers from 1795 to 1860. The account book lists sales at auctions of goods of Jonathan Wood ( - ) in Worcester, Mass., conducted by Rejoice Newton, for the period 1823 to 1824, and includes the purchasers of goods, prices paid, and a list of Wood's creditors and amounts owed. The six folders of business papers concern Newton's varied activities, especially as an attorney and magistrate, through letters from clients, fellow lawyers, and business partners. Several items of note are letters from the trustees of the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston concerning land left to them by Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831), Newton's appointments as trustee of the State Lunatic Hospital at Worcester from 1842 to 1854, references to his financial involvement with the Blackstone Canal Co., his dealings with partner William Lincoln and Agent Ichabod Buckman ( - ) as a landlord of "eastern lands" in Columbia, Me., and as a speculator in the Kennebeck Lumber Co. in Somerset, Me. The folders also contain many legal documents, such as land deeds, arrest warrants, insurance policies, official appointments to various state offices, partnership contracts, an indenture creating Chandler Street in Worcester, and many receipts and bills from a miscellany of partners, clothiers, tax offices, and from Worcester Gas Light and other companies. The eleven diaries of Levi Lincoln Newton were written during his years at Harvard and later as bank cashier and provide much insight into Worcester and Cambridge society and politics. Typical comments concern his extensive social activities on campus and at home, the rioting and violence at Harvard during the 1830s, lectures, professors, schoolwork, abolition meetings, speeches by Wendell Phillips (1811-1884), temperance meetings, which Newton regularly attended, "freak" shows, the partaking of "Exhilarating gas" by Harvard students, and his extensive interest in botany and horticulture. After his return to Worcester in 1839, Newton made observations on Whig politics, loco-foco activities, the Presidential campaign of 1840, and the city's political and Fourth of July celebrations. Includes also are materials on the Liquor License Law controversy, his frequent visits to the American Antiquarian Society, Charles Dickens' (1812-1870) visit to America and Levi's meeting him, lectures by eminent literary figures, court trials, and the activities of the Worcester Militia. Newton frequently refers to the "Dorr Rebellion" of 1842, and the economic depressions of the late 1830s and 1840s. A folder contains letters written by Levi Lincoln Newton to his mother and sister, Hester, from 1834 to 1847, with many references to Harvard, especially its 200th celebration in 1836, disputed city elections, and a descriptive trip to Newport, R.I. In 1847, a trip South for his health resulted in detailed descriptions of Richmond, Va., and a slave auction. The folder also contains a few letters written by Rebecca Lincoln Newton and Rejoice Newton to their daughter, Hester, and several written by Rejoice's nephew, James W. Newton ( - ), with references to the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), the attack on Fort Sumter, and the march of Massachusetts troops to Washington, D.C., in 1861.

Title:
Letters and drawings, 1818-1835.
This collection consists of letters of Caleb Atwater to Rejoice Newton, Isaiah Thomas, and the American Antiquarian Society. The correspondence covers the period 1818 to 1821 and concerns Atwater's research on Indian antiquities in Ohio until a dispute over the terms of his agreement with the society induced his withdrawal. With the correspondence are original maps and plans of the country investigated, a catalogue of relics which Atwater presented the society, various notes and memoranda, and a collection of extracts of Atwater's letters in the hand of Isaiah Thomas. The first volume of American Antiquarian Society Transactions, 1820, contains an exhaustive report illustrated by maps and drawings of the result of Atwater's explorations. Some of the original drawings and engravings are found in this collection.

Charles Francis Adams, 1862-1943. South America Expedition Records 1904-1922.
Title:
South America Expedition Records 1904-1922.
The General Accounts subseries in Series I. (Expedition Administration) contains bills, financial records, and receipts. The Reports subseries consists of what appears to be PM internal reports written by F.W. Putnam, the museum curator, and a report by expeditioon participant and patron, Louis J. de Milhau. Some of this material was later published in the PM annual reports and possibly in the Harvard University Gazette but it is unclear if these are actual drafts. Over two hundred items in Series II. (Correspondence) detail the general administration and progress of the expedition. Records documenting expedition funding, artifacts purchased and some of Farabee's professional correspondence are also included in this series. Series III-V (Field Notes, Research Notes, and Manuscripts) make up the bulk of the records and include loose sheets and notebooks, research notes (primarily notecards kept by Farabee), and the manuscript for Farabee's above mentioned monograph. Field notes are recorded in twelve notebooks kept by Farabee. In addition, there is one notebook of Campa (Campa Indians) vocabulary that was given to Farabee. The drawings and vocabulary lists in Series III (Field Notes) consist of loose material not included in the manuscript. Notecards in Series IV (Research Notes) originally consisted of two incomplete sets, one marked "copies". These have been interfiled according to subject matter. Where there are duplicates the "copies" set follows the original. Series V (Manuscripts) is incomplete and consists of material from multiple drafts of Farabee's monograph (1922).Material is arranged according to the chapter order of the monograph. Series VI consists of typescript and handwritten transcriptions and translations of contemporary newspaper articles about the expedition. Material in Series VII (Photographs) is scant and peripheral. Additional photographs can be found in the related PM Photographic Archives collection. In addition to two coated fabric maps, six typescript copies of somatological tables have been housed in Series VIII (Oversize Materials).
