This collection contains documents outlining the research activity of Squier and Davis, 1847-1848, in preparation for a book they were to produce entitled Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley (Washington: Smithsonian Institution, 1848). Included is a page proof and prospectus of the book, letters written by Davis, primarily to the American Antiquarian Society, requesting financial aid for the undertaking, and the Society's detailed report on its investigations into their work while considering support of the project. The collection also contains many charts, maps, surveys, and sketches relative to prehistoric mounds located in Ohio, especially the Chillicothe and Scioto Valley areas. Notations on measurement and the type of art, implements, metals, and minerals found within the mounds, e.g., sketches of pipes and hieroglyphic rocks, are also included.

Ephraim George Squier (1821-1888) and Dr. Edwin Hamilton Davis (1811-1888) of Chillicothe, Ohio were antiquarian authors who became authorities in the field of Indian antiquities.
