Papers, 1854-1906.

This collection of Hunnewell papers is related primarily to his publications. Oversize folders contain items relating to the five publications mentioned above. There are lists of copies of his publications sent to press, to individuals, to libraries, and historical societies; there are clippings of reviews of these books printed in newspapers and periodicals such as the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Charlestown Enterprise, The Critic, The Guardian, the Boston Evening Gazette, etc.; and there are acknowledgements from individuals and institutions who received copies. Also included in oversize folders are clippings relating to articles on Boston and Charlestown local history and clippings relating to meetings of institutions where Hunnewell presented papers (including the Bostonian Society, the American Antiquarian Society, the Society for Propagating the Gospel, and others). Other folders contain correspondence, notes, and miscellaneous papers, from 1854 to 1899, including letters to Hunnewell seeking historical information, a few pages of biographical information on Hunnewell and his family, and a few business letters. Two letterbooks, covering the period 1882 to 1906, contain copies of letters written by Hunnewell concerning his publications (many are cover letters accompanying copies of his books and articles), business investments, books he is interested in collecting, etc. Many of these letters are unreadable because they are so faded.
