Letters, 1813-1822.

This collection of thirteen letters consists of ten typescript copies of letters of Alden in the AAS Records, 1812- and the William Bentley Papers, 1666-1819. Alden's letters to AAS concern his membership and interest in Society activities, while the letters to Bentley are those from the President of the fledgling Allegheny College to an interested Trustee. Another letter, dated 11 November 1815, is a typescript of an original owned by Allegheny College and concerns the gift of James Winthrop (1752-1821) to the college of his personal library. An original letter from Alden to William Bentley Fowle (1795-1865), dated 26 February 1822, concerns Alden's desire to obtain biographical information on William Bentley (1759-1819) for inclusion in Alden's projected history of Allegheny College. The collection also contains a photocopy of a typescript "Circular Letter, respectfully addressed to every gentleman of science in the state of New-Jersey," dated 1 January 1811, which concerns Alden's quest for information on the state of New Jersey for inclusion in Alden's projected history of New Jersey.
