The American Antiquarian Society was founded in Worcester, Mass., in 1812, largely through the efforts of Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831). Increase Allen Lapham (1811-1875), scientist and scholar of Milwaukee, Wis., was a keen observer and prolific recorder of geographical, topographical, botanical, climactic, and other physical aspects of the state of Wisconsin.
