English statesman.
Epithet: Prime Minister; of Add MS 39263
British statesman.
Epithet: Colonel
Epithet: of Add MS 38011
Epithet: of Sloane MS 3827
Pitt was a member of the British Parliament (1735-1766) and served as Prime Minister (Jul. 1766-Oct. 1768).
Born in 1708 to a merchant family, William Pitt rose to great heights in British politics, serving at various times as a Member of Parliament, secretary of state, and prime minister. Educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, Pitt began his political career in Parliament in 1735 after assuming a seat vacated by his older brother. Referred to as the "Great Commoner," Pitt stood apart from most of his colleagues for his willingness to court public support, criticize those in power, and promote the interests of the colonists abroad. Pitt married Hester Grenville, daughter of Richard Grenville and Countess Temple in 1754. In 1756, Pitt became secretary of state during the early stages of the Seven Years' War. During his tenure, Pitt focused the country's military strategy on confronting the French at sea and in the colonial areas of both North America and India. He also rallied public support behind the war effort and strengthened relations with Prussia. These actions greatly contributed to Britain's success in the war. He is also sometimes referred to as Britain's first Imperialist, who paved the way for expansion into North America, India, and Africa. In 1766, Pitt was invited by King George III to become prime minister, at which point he accepted the title of Earl of Chatham. He selected cabinet members with varying political ideas which resulted in a divided administration. Pitt also suffered from chronic gout, and spent much of his term in seclusion. After two years in office, the statesman resigned in 1768 and retreated to Hayes, his estate on the outskirts of London in Kent. During this time, Hester, Pitt's wife, looked after most of his affairs as his deteriorating condition left him at times unable to write or see visitors. The following years were marked by illness and financial trouble. When his health permitted, Pitt continued to make sporadic appearances before the House of Lords, most notably speaking in defense of the North American colonists and their grievances. He argued that concessions should be made in order to appease the colonists and avoid war. William Pitt died in 1778. William Pitt the Younger followed his father into a career in politics, becoming prime minister in 1783 at the age of 23. Influenced by the writings of Adam Smith, he reduced tariffs and government spending while levying new taxes in an effort to lower the debt resulting from the American Revolution. In 1793, following the French Revolution, France attacked Britain, prompting Pitt to form a number of ultimately unsuccessful coalitions with other European states. Pitt also introduced restrictive measures aimed at silencing those British subjects urging Parliamentary reform. The war drained Britain's financial reserves and inflamed Irish nationalists, who believed French revolutionaries would help them overthrow the monarchy in England. To ease these tensions, Pitt proposed a union between Ireland and England. However, due to a disagreement with King George III over Catholic emancipation, Pitt resigned from the government in 1801. In 1804, Pitt returned to serve a second term as prime minister, dying in office in 1806.
Epithet: Lieutenant; RN
William Pitt, the Elder (Earl of Chatham, 1708-1778), entered parliament for Old Sarum in 1735. He became secretary of state in 1756.
William Pitt, the Younger (1759-1806), son of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, was elected to parliament in 1781, became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1782, and became Britain's youngest Prime Minister at age 24 in 1783.
William Pitt (1759-1806) was born at Hayes, Kent, on 28 May 1759, the second son of William Pitt, first earl of Chatham, and Hester, daughter of Richard Grenville. He was educated at home, before entering Pembroke Hall, Cambridge, in 1773 (M.A., 1776). In 1781 he became M.P. for Appleby, and in 1782 he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in the government of Lord Sherburne. He resigned from the government in March 1783, but in December of that year, following the fall of the Duke of Portland's administration, he became Britain's youngest prime minister. His success in the general election of 1784 gave him a majority in the House of Commons, and allowed him to pass new measures in Parliament. These included the India Act, which established dual control of the East India Company, and a reduction in duties, which was intended to tackle the problem of smuggling. In April 1785 Pitt tried to introduce a bill to remove the 36 rotten boroughs in the country and to transfer the seats to other areas. However, the bill was defeated in the House of Commons.
In February 1793 France declared war on Britain. Pitt decided that it was essential to suppress all domestic dissention if the war was to be fought successfully. As a result, he introduced a bill to suspend Habeas Corpus, and backed away from his earlier support for constitutional reform. At this time a number of parliamentary reformers were arrested. To counter France Pitt formed alliances with the other European powers. However, the allies suffered defeats during 1794, and the cost of the war and poor harvests forced the government to raise taxation, leading to angry protests. Pitt's health began to suffer, leading to reports in the press that he was having a breakdown. In response, he passed legislation to allow the government to suppress and regulate the newspapers.
There was growing unrest in Ireland during the 1790s, and in 1798 an uprising had to be suppressed by the Irish chief secretary, Castlereagh. In 1801 Pitt introduced the Act of Union to unite Ireland with the rest of Britain under one Parliament. Castlereagh and Pitt appealed to the Irish Catholic population by promising that they would be granted equality before the law after the Act was passed. However, George III opposed the offer of Catholic emancipation, and Pitt felt it necessary to offer his resignation. He returned to office in 1804, to take up the struggle again against France. Pitt formed a new alliance with Russia, Austria and Sweden against Napoleon, and following the English victory at Trafalgar in 1805 was hailed as the Europe's saviour. However, Napoleon's victory over the Russian and Austrian forces at Austerlitz crushed Pitt, who fell seriously ill. He died at his house in Putney on 23 Jan. 1806.

History of the Seven Years' War, 1756-1762.
Title:
History of the Seven Years' War, 1756-1762.
Manuscript, in a single hand, with many corrections, of a history of the Seven Years' War, focusing on British actions and policies from the declaration of war against the French in 1756 to the preliminary articles of peace in November 1762, divided into 16 stitched fascicles. The first 9 fascicles, from 1756-1760, present the history in narrative form. In addition to accounts of European battles, this section includes an account of French actions in North America in 1760, including Canada and especially regarding relations with Native Americans; a note which records a poem by the poet-laureate William Whitehead in 1760 celebrating the events of that year; a mention of casualties in the "black troops in the English service" at the battle of Wandiwash in India in 1759; an account of the tumult in London over an infestation of mad dogs in 1760 and of the symptoms of an infected man; and a description of the death of George II in 1760, with a reflection on the achievements and flaws of his life. The last 7 fascicles are a collection of copies of letters, dated from London from 1761 to 1762, reporting on events of the Seven Years' War, as well as commenting on current political and social events in London. The letters report on activities in Europe and India; the war against Spain; a conspiracy formed at Bermuda "by the negroes there"; the battle and surrender of Havana; and the preliminary peace negotations. The writer also reports the deaths of Bishop Benjamin Hoadly of Winchester, the chemist Joshua Ward, and Samuel Richardson; notes the town's surprise at the news of the king's announcement of marriage to Sophia Charlotte; describes her dress and appearance at her marriage ceremony; describes the king's coronation in 1761; and mentions a tax on windows as well as unseasonable weather. Many letters in 1761 pertain to the resignation of William Pitt, in which the writer criticizes the hypocrisy of Pitt's acceptance of a peerage and pension. Although unsigned, the letters occasionally mention personal details such as references to the correspondent's brother's illness. The manuscript is prefaced by an introduction in which the author explains that the work was begun for his amusement, but that he soon realized the difficulty of attempting a historical account while the facts were still recent and therefore decided to put the facts in an epistolary form which allowed him to provide context for them. Accompanying the manuscript are two stitched fascicles of notes from Milton's History of Britain , and one harrating English history and politics from the death of Charles I to the Rye House Plot.

Grenville, George, 1712-1770. Correspondence, 1742-1762.
Title:
Correspondence, 1742-1762.
Vol. 1 contains 37 letters dated between 1742-1748, many between Grenville and his brothers Thomas, a naval captain, and Richard, later Earl Temple, a politician. In one letter, Thomas writes of having taken a rich prize from the West Indies, and describes his difficulties in obtaining legal clearance to take a Portuguese prize bound for Cadiz. Elsewhere, Grenville mentions his attempts to carry the Turnpike Act into execution; the death of Alexander Pope; the siege of Coni; and rebellion in Scotland. A letter from Admiral Anson reports the death of Thomas Grenville; and other letters refer to events in the War of Austrian Succession, including a letter from William Pitt reporting on the Treaty of Aix-la-Chappelle in 1748. Other letters contain routine social correspondence, including inquiries about illnesses and gossip about mutual acquaintances. Vol. 2 contains 54 letters, dated between 1749-1755. Numerous letters between Grenville and his brother Richard regard their application for their mother to be created a countess, including discussions over what titles they should choose. One letter from Pitt to Grenville discusses the Mutiny Bill; Pitt's other letters complain of his gout; report on the death of Pelham and speculate on the implications for Parliament, as well as Henry Fox's potential as Chancellor of the Exchequer; and discuss the portrait of himself being painted by William Hoare. A letter from Henry Fox to Grenville discusses the Oxford Election petition; another from Grenville's brother James reports on Admiral Boscawen's fight with the French off Cape Race, Newfoundland; and a letter from Grenville's wife reports on news in Parliament and gossip about their acquaintances. This volume also includes a letter from George, Prince of Wales, thanking Grenville for his condolences on the death of the Prince's father. Vol. 3 contains 82 letters, dated between 1758-1759. The majority of the letters concern events of the Seven Years' War, including a report from James Grenville on the naval action at St. Malo; a letter from Rev. Mr. Cotton on a naval battle at Halifax Harbor and then the successful possession of Quebec though it cost the death of General Wolfe; and another from Sir Richard Lyttelton on the raising of the siege of Olmutz. Elsewhere, Charles Jenkinson remarks on "the success of our arms in America" with the taking of Louisburg, Canada; William Pitt expresses his disappointment with the loss of Ticonderago; and others report on Prussian and Russian engagements. The volume also contains letters referencing Richard Grenville, Earl Temple's application for a vacancy in the Order of the Garter, and the illness and death of Grenville's 7-year-old son. Vol. 4 contains 73 letters dated between 1760-1761. The majority of the letters concern the ongoing peace negotiations, especially between Great Britain and France, as well as between Great Britain and Spain. Many letters mention the demands of the Duc de Choiseul; the ultimatums made by both Great Britain and France; and the dissention between England and Spain regarding points of the proposed treaty. Many of the remaining letters concern the resignation of William Pitt and Earl Temple, including one by James Grenville declaring his resignation from the Office of the Cofferer in solidarity with Pitt and Temple; and the search for a speaker of the House of Commons. The volume also contains several letters regarding Earl Temple's reception of the Order of the Garter. Vol. 5 contains 53 letters dated in 1762. Many of the letters reference the ongoing peace negotiations, including mentions of the conquest of Havana and a discussion between Grenville and Fox about sending a squadron out to sea during the negotations, arguing that hostilities are to cease only after the exchange of ratifications of the Preliminary Articles of peace, and not before. Many of the remaining letters are between Earl Temple and Wilkes, and occasionally make reference to the letters' surveillance by their enemies; other topics include Wilkes' paper, North Briton; a duel between Wilkes and Lord Talbot; discussions of Parliamentary news; and a request by Temple for Wilkes to stop sending him any more verses and to be more discreet. Vol. 5 also contains a packet of 23 letters marked "unpublished," dated between 1762-1787, which make further references to hostilities in Europe and to Parliamentary activities. Also in this packet are a poem written by Grenville's son, William Wyndham Grenville, dated 1769, "aged 10 years"; and a letter from Earl Temple to his brother James regarding his wife's death in 1777.

Spicer, Jacob, 1717-1765. Jacob Spicer papers, 1737-1846 1744-1765.
Title:
Jacob Spicer papers, 1737-1846 1744-1765.
This collection, which dates from 1737-1846 with bulk dates of 1744-1765, consists of a diary, copy letters, receipts, will, and estate papers. The diary, written by Jacob Spicer from 1755 to 1756, discusses his business and political affairs. During the period covered in the diary, Spicer spent twenty-nine days in Philadelphia printing the proprietary laws of New Jersey. Other notations indicate the sale of land by locals and types and values of goods Spicer sold. Spicer sold steer and cows; raccoon, muskrat, and otter skins; rum and a number of dry goods. A manuscript and typescript copy of selected passages of a different Spicer diary (ca. 1758-1762) is included in this collection. The correspondence includes copy letters written by Spicer, a letterbook kept in his hand, and typescript copies of the letters in the book from October 1764 to July 1765. The correspondence deals mainly with the British and colonial attack on the fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1745. There are also many letters relating to other political matters and some from and to some very notable figures including King George II of England, William Pitt, and William Shirley, Governor of Massachusetts. The topic of discussion in these letters revolves around the attack on Louisbourg. There is also some correspondence regarding fighting with the French near the Monaghela River in Pennsylvania in 1755. The copies of the correspondence include family histories that were written in 1846. Additionally, there is an account for the New Jersey contingent of the forces planning an attack on Canada in 1746, a sketch made by Jacob Spicer titled A Plan of the City and Harbour of Louisbourg on the Island of Breton in America, and a power of attorney from Samuel Jones, Jacob Spicer's son-in-law, appointing David Pugh to be his attorney.

Arms and the man I sing [graphic].
Title:
Arms and the man I sing [graphic]. [1765]
A political cartoon denouncing the Stamp Act of 1765 with references to the reaction in Boston. At the center of the image is a tree with a noose and a placard which reads "The Tree of Liberty, August 14, 1765." Grouped around the tree are embodiments of America, Liberty, and Loyalty. Fortune hovers nearby. While the figure of Britannia offers Panadora's Box (i.e. the Stamp Act), the Goddess Minerva counsels Liberty to reject the Box as the God Mecury flees. In the background, colonial figures prepare to hang the Stamp Men. In the foreground a dog whose collar reads "W[illiam] P[itt] a Dog" wipes his hind legs on a thistle (representing the Scottish advisor to George III, Earl of Bute). Text in stanza form in upper right prophesizes the dreadful consequences should the Stamp Act be enforced.

Pitt, William, Earl of Chatham, 1708-1778. Papers of the William Pitt family, 1757-1804 [electronic resource].
Title:
Papers of the William Pitt family, 1757-1804 [electronic resource].
Many of the letters in this collection are from the Pitt family to a longtime friend of the family, Alexander Hood. The remaining items include a scattering of documents pertaining to the political activities of William Pitt and his son. The letters to Hood, most of which date from the 1770s, reveal the family's financial concerns. Hood, an officer in the British Royal Navy who fought in the Seven Years' War and American Revolution, loaned the family money in times of economic instability. Hester Grenville Pitt wrote many of the letters, as her husband's illness left him at time unable to hold a pen. Aside from financial matters, other recurring topics include James Pitt, a son who sailed on a ship under Hood's command, plans for social visits between the two families, and accounts of visits to the coastal town of Lyme Regis. Political subjects are occasionally broached, most notably in a 1787 letter from William Pitt the Younger, which mentions plans for the arming of a fleet. The remaining documents, most of which concern the political activities of William Pitt and his son, are a diverse assortment dating from the latter half of the 1700s. The earliest item in the collection is a letter from Pitt the Elder, as Secretary of State, to Governor William Denny of Pennsylvania. The document, dating from 1757, outlines plans for reinforcements to be sent to the colonies to aid in the war effort against France. The letter implores the governor to raise troops locally as well. Other documents reveal Pitt the Elder's interest in the North American colonies. A letter from the London Common Council praises Pitt for a speech he gave proposing a plan to resolve the differences between the colonies and Britain. In July of 1776, Pitt, fearing he would not recover from his long illness, recorded his opinions on the war with his doctor. In the memorandum, Pitts clearly states his opposition to the war, and raises concerns that it might leave England open to an attack by France. The documents relating to William Pitt the Younger include an acceptance of the King's invitation to attend an event at the Queen's House, letters addressed to Cambridge University requesting that he continue his term as their representative, and notices sent to others members of Parliament encouraging their attendance at various sessions.

Macartney, George Macartney, Earl, 1737-1806,. Autograph letter signed from Earl George Macartney, London, to the Honorable Edmond Malone, London [manuscript], 1799 June 2.
Title:
Autograph letter signed from Earl George Macartney, London, to the Honorable Edmond Malone, London [manuscript], 1799 June 2.
Macartney tells Malone to turn to Burke's speech in which he delineates the characters of My Lord Chatham, W. Grenville and Charles Townshend. He thinks that Burke must have just come from reading Dryden's essay on Dramatic poetry. There is a note at the bottom of the letter in another hand (possibly Malone's?) that describes the context of the letter to Malone.

Dodington, George Bubb, Baron of Melcombe Regis, 1691-1762. Diary, 1749 Mar 8-1761 Feb 6.
Title:
Diary, 1749 Mar 8-1761 Feb 6.
Holograph of Henry Penruddocke Wyndham's copy of Dodington's diary, which records Dodington's interactions and intrigues, primarily political but occasionally personal, with various notable figures of the day, especially relating to his attendance at Parliament and at court. He recounts conversations and dinners with King George II, Prime Minister Henry Pelham, and other politicians and courtiers, but especially Prince Frederick of Wales, the Princess Augusta, and John Stuart, 3rd earl of Bute. He describes the various machinations of the court, naming his enemies, Lords Egmont and Baltimore; records his participation in various elections and in the rivalry between William Pitt and Henry Fox for leadership of the House of Commons, and details discussions regarding the Seven Years' War. The manuscript includes a dedication and preface explaining the provenance of the original diary and Wyndham's reasons why publishing it would not violate Dodington's injunction, in his will, not to publish any papers except those which would do honor to his memory.
