Arms and the man I sing [graphic]. [1765]

A political cartoon denouncing the Stamp Act of 1765 with references to the reaction in Boston. At the center of the image is a tree with a noose and a placard which reads "The Tree of Liberty, August 14, 1765." Grouped around the tree are embodiments of America, Liberty, and Loyalty. Fortune hovers nearby. While the figure of Britannia offers Panadora's Box (i.e. the Stamp Act), the Goddess Minerva counsels Liberty to reject the Box as the God Mecury flees. In the background, colonial figures prepare to hang the Stamp Men. In the foreground a dog whose collar reads "W[illiam] P[itt] a Dog" wipes his hind legs on a thistle (representing the Scottish advisor to George III, Earl of Bute). Text in stanza form in upper right prophesizes the dreadful consequences should the Stamp Act be enforced.

1 print on laid paper : engraving, b&w ; plate 26 x 35 cm., sheet 30 x 43 cm.
