Title:
Samuel Breck papers, 1795-1862.
Philanthropist, amateur artist and historian, diligent documentarian, Breck's worldly interests were truly vast and are well preserved. The materials in this collection represent a staggering amount of subject interests and a near-lifetime's worth of documentation, though Breck devoted the bulk of his attention to American and European history and politics, philanthropy, and literature. This collection spans the period of 1795 to 1862 and takes the form of diaries, travel logs, manuscripts, lecture transcripts, notes, and graphics.

Cheshunt College. Cheshunt College collection on Bethesda College, 1770-1778.
Title:
Cheshunt College collection on Bethesda College, 1770-1778.
This collection consists of photocopies of letters, maps, and other documents pertaining to George Whitefield's plans to add the Bethesda College to the Bethesda Orphan House. These papers also contain information on the orphanage. Included are: a letter from James Habersham to the Countess of Huntingdon describing the situation at Bethesda during the months after Whitefield's death; a letter from Margaret Floyd on the pillaging and neglect of Bethesda during the Revolutionary War; and Habersham's account of the burning of Whitefield's house in 1773 and his proposal to rebuild in brick. The college planning documents include a letter on the staffing of Bethesda; a list of annual prizes to be offered at Bethesda, which display Whitefield's plans to include a theological college with the orphanage; rules for the conduct of Bethesda College; a map of land by the Vernon River; and a map and plan of the orphanage. The descriptions in the inventory are notes on the items made by Rev. Stephen Orchard, who copied the documents from the Cheshunt College collection and sent them to the Bethesda Home for Boys in 1976. In addition to the photocopied documents, Orchard also included in his letter a copy of the Calendar of Archives; the titles of the documents have been kept the same as their listed forms in this inventory. Orchard was corresponding with W. Ford of the Bethesda Home for Boys, and some of his notes are directed toward their ongoing conversation; Ford may have been trying to uncover the original lands and building foundations of the orphanage.

Albert J. Pickett papers, 1779-1904
Title:
Albert J. Pickett papers, 1779-1904
The Albert J. Pickett Papers form approximately one-half of the Pickett Family Papers, LPR185. The History of Alabama series is the largest series within the Albert J. Pickett Papers, and it contains letters and manuscripts Pickett received from numerous prominent individuals in the course of writing his book. Some people sent Pickett their reminiscences of major events, while a few sent Pickett documents from the late 1700s and early 1800s. The Creek Indian War of 1813-1814 is particularly well-documented. Many of the letters advised Pickett of potential sources of information. Most of the letters and manuscripts were bound together in two volumes by Pickett. This series also includes drafts of the book. The correspondence series contains letters from Pickett to family members, chiefly his wife. Several of the letters were written in 1851 when he travelled to New York and Charleston to arrange the publication of the History of Alabama. The scrapbook, clippings, and speeches series contains a scrapbook assembled by Pickett of articles he wrote and articles about his History of Alabama. Most of the clippings and speeches not in his scrapbook are transcriptions.

Ball, William, 1729-1810. Collection, 1752-1995, 1759-1762 (bulk).
Title:
Collection, 1752-1995, 1759-1762 (bulk).
The collection includes William Ball's "Merchandise Journal," Elizabeth Byles Ball's recipe book, an inventory of William's estate, bills of sale for slaves, some genealogical material about the Ball family, miscellaneous notes and correspondence about Ball, and some information about the Baltimore silversmith also named William Ball. The merchandise journal, which covers 1759-1762, records the sales of a wide variety of goods, including textile fabrics, buttons and buckles, dress accessories, tools, watches, snuff boxes, some silver and jewelry, pencils, and a wide variety of other items. Many of these goods were purchased in large quantities, by the gross or dozen. There are two bills of sale for slaves, both for boys aged about fourteen, one named Tom and the other Anthony (but originally named Tom). There inventory taken of Ball's estate following his death in 1810 includes furniture, books, bedding, silver pieces, jewelry, farming "utensils," and pewter and silversmithing tools. Values for the items are listed. Elizabeth Byles [later Ball] began her book in 1759. She recorded some hymns and poems, but the bulk of the contents are recipes, and most of these are for medicines. Sometimes she noted from whom she collected the recipe. As well, there are recipes for food and drink. One of the poems is about the minister George Whitefield.

Diary, 1768, Dec. 8 -- 1773, Apr. 4, (bulk 1768, Dec. 8 -- 1769, Apr. 28 )
Title:
Diary, 1768, Dec. 8 -- 1773, Apr. 4, (bulk 1768, Dec. 8 -- 1769, Apr. 28 )
Diary and memorandum book of an unidentified Bostonian, probably a relative of John Olds, a London merchant. The largest portion of the diary covers his stay in London from December 1768 to late April 1769 (ff. 2-58). The diariest sailed from Boston to London in October 1768, onboard the Amazon. The diarist, evidently a single young man, also recounts his visits to the relatives (one of whom asked him "whether people in America talk'd English"), sightseeing and social life -- coffeehouses, the Old Bailey, Parliament, St. Paul's cathedral, the Tower, etc (including admission fees), and a detailed record of a session of a "Disputing Club" that held a moderated debate on "whether or not it was to the honour of Britain to tax America." Much of this portion of the diary is devoted to politics, especially the Middlesex election of John Wilkes (the diary opens with an account of the Brentford riots) and the American policies of the cabinet. An intensely religious person, he attended services at various London churches, including George Whitefield's Tabernacle; the diary contains detailed records of sermons and preachers. The diary also frequently mentions John Olds and Thomas Bromfield (1734-1816), a Boston merchant who had settled in London in 1760. This portion ends with a record of his voyage to Boston onboard the Paoli; he arrived to the city on June 19, 1769. The other, smaller, portion of the diary consists of detailed records of sermons, mostly by John Hunt and John Bacon of the Old South Church, that the diarist attended between Jan. 14 and Apr. 1773; the records include the author's own religious reflections. Also included is a certificate of residency issued by the town of Weathersfield, Conn. to Peter Verstille who had moved there from Boston in April 1760.

[West Brookfield historical papers : Whitefield Rock] / [compiled by Archie B. Jay]. 1964.
Rev. George Whitefield, a touring evangelist preacher, swept through New England in the early 1740s. He gave one of his rousing sermons from a large rock upon Foster Hill to 400-500 people. He was one of the people who founded Methodism in England in 1738, and also espoused Calvinist doctrine of predestination, which eventually estranged him from the Wesleyan Methodists.

Piercy discusses the debts of the college and orphan house which were left at the time of George Whitefield's death and other financial problems, his plans to improve the plantations by purchasing more slaves, the services of Mr. Law, a Georgia plantation owner who undertakes to manage the plantation, Piercy's desire to preach to the slaves and Indians, missionary efforts by his brother Richard Piercy in the "back country," James Habersham (another representative of the Countess), rice crops, the Countess' property in South Carolina, and other matters. Letters written in 1773 are from Bethesda (Ga.); later letters are from Charleston (S.C.), Philadelphia (Pa.), and Bethesda. In 1781 Piercy writes from Cork (Ireland), and later from Dublin (Ireland), and elsewhere in Great Britain. He reports that the British have plundered the Countess' plantation in Georgia. He also asks that, in the event of his death, the Countess would befriend and look after his family and wife, who is "connected to the most respectable and opulent families in Carolina." Throughout the letters Piercy often cites misunderstandings and defends himself against "misrepresentations" which have been given to the Countess about him. The concluding letters include copies of two of her replies to Piercy in which she requests him to prepare his accounts and other documents for investigation by arbitrators.

Title:
John Wesley family papers, 1734-1864.
The collection consists of materials relating to John Wesley and the Wesley family from 1734-1864. The materials include correspondence, writings, and photographs and other images of Wesley. The correspondence of John Wesley pertains to church business and theology. The correspondence of Sarah Wesley (b. 1760) is with family and friends (mostly with her mother, Sarah G. Wesley, and her brother, Samuel Wesley) and pertains to family activities, travel, and beliefs. Correspondence (1779-1780) of Methodists Joseph and Sarah T. Benson details their courtship. A later addition of correspondence between Charles Wesley and organist John Langshaw, pertains to Methodism, the American Revolution, and London musicians and music teachers. The collection also includes three of John Wesley's diaries. The original 1736 diary documents part of his trip to Georgia (1735-1738) with his brother Charles, and is written partially in the cipher they sometimes used in their letters. The other two diaries are photocopies of the 1735 and 1737 volumes held by Methodist Archives in London. Other materials include Sarah Wesley's personal writings, Sarah G. Wesley's poetic psalms, sermons of John Wesley, a Wesley family genealogy, and music manuscripts. Photographs and other pictures are of Wesley memorabilia, and drawings, paintings, and sculpture of the Wesleys.
