Ball was the son of Mary White and William Ball, who owned "Hope Farm" outside of Philadelphia. The younger William sold a variety of goods in his shop, as well as silver and gold. In 1771, William married his cousin Elizabeth Byles, the daughter of the pewterer Thomas Byles. After Byles' death, William took over his father-in-law's shop. The Balls had no children.
