Harris, Thaddeus Mason, 1768-1842

Thaddeus Mason Harris (1768-1842) earned his Harvard AB in 1789 and was given an honorary degree in 1813. He was a clergyman and well-traveled author and served as librarian at Harvard from 1791-1793. His son, Thaddeus William Harris (1795-1856), earned his Harvard AB in 1815, and became a natural historian, noted especially as an entymologist. The son also served as librarian at Harvard from 1831-1856.

Thaddeus Mason Harris, a native of Massachusetts, graduated from Harvard University and was the University's Librarian, 1791-1793. He was one of the first American entomologists. After further study he was ordained a Unitarian Clergyman. From 1837 to his death he was Librarian of the Massachusetts Historical Society. He became an Honorary Member of the Georgia Historical Society in 1939. He was the author of Biographical Memorials of James Oglethorpe (Boston, 1841) and other books and articles.
