Washington Irving papers, 1759-1898, 1805-1866
Title:
Washington Irving papers 1759-1898 1805-1866
Washington Irving (1783-1859), the American author, wrote his first popular work, A History of New York, under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker. He continued to write stories and essays which made him the outstanding figure in American literature of his time and established his reputation abroad. In 1826 Irving went to Spain to work at the American embassy in Madrid, then at the American legation in London, before returning to New York in 1832. In 1842 he was sent back to Madrid as U.S. minister. After traveling extensively in the U.S. and Europe, he established himself at his estate "Sunnyside" near Tarrytown, N.Y. where he continued to write historical and biographical works. He also served as the first president of the Astor Library in New York City from 1849 until his death in 1859. Collection contains correspondence, writings by Irving, family papers, pictorial materials, and published works about Irving. Correspondence, 1805-1863, consists of Irving's letters to and from family, friends and colleagues as well as correspondence and other documents signed in his capacity as charge d'affaires of the American legation in London and as president of the Astor Library. Literary manuscripts include holograph drafts, manuscripts, revisions, and notes for many of Irving's literary and historical works. Journals consist of his diaries kept between 1804 and 1842; notebooks contain personal and literary notes made between 1807 and 1844; family papers include letters and documents written or received by members of the Irving family (except Washington Irving); related letters and documents are items that were not generated or received by Irving or his family but which relate to Irving or his associates; and pictorial materials contain original drawings, oil portrait of Irving, etchings, lithographs, photographs, and many engravings. Also, rare editions of Irving's writings and translations and works about him (many are extra-illustrated).

Title:
Reminiscences of Edward E. Ayer, 1899-1925.
The "Reminiscences of Edward Ayer's first trip from home ..." (HM 68693) is a 1924 version of a narrative by Ayer detailing his many and varied experiences in the American West from 1860 to 1864. Most of the narrative deals with his time as a California Volunteer. The 1923 manuscript "Why I love Prescott's 'Conquest of Mexico'" (HM 68694) describes how Prescott's book opened up the world of books and history for Ayer. Both manuscripts are typewritten carbon copies, and the 1923 item is signed and dated by Ayer. The third item, HM 16784a, is a bound volume of 187 pages, entitled "Early Reminiscences of Edward E. Ayer." Inscribed to the Huntington Library by Ayer, it contains typescript versions of the "Reminiscences of Edward Ayer's first trip from home ..." and of twelve other memoirs of various trips and adventures abroad -- in Europe, Asia, Central America and in the American West. It also includes typescripts of two letters from Ayer to the Board of Directors of the Field Museum. HM 16784b (also 187 pages) is a variant version of HM 16784a, and includes a print of a portrait of Ayer. HM 16784b is inscribed by Ayer to William Hertrich, gardener to Mr. Huntington and later superintendent of grounds and buildings at the Huntington.

Stuart, George E. George E. Stuart collection of archaeological and other materials, 1733-2006.
Title:
George E. Stuart collection of archaeological and other materials, 1733-2006.
Materials collected by George Stuart include papers related to several early Maya scholars and archaeologists, such as M. Latour Allard, Guillermo Dupaix, Edward King (Lord Kingsborough), Augustus Le Plongeon, William H. Prescott, Ephraim George Squier, John Lloyd Stephens, and Jean Frederic Waldeck; papers related to archaeologists of the southeastern United States, such as John P. Rogan and Cyrus Thomas; papers concerning the history of South Carolina, specifically Camden, S.C.; Civil War and Confederate papers, including engravings, newspapers, and miscellaneous documents; and other items, such as an 1869 diary of polar explorer Adolphus Greely written while traveling in the United States, letterhead of Adolf Hitler, a 1939 issue of "Family Circle" featuring the first published notice of "Gone With the Wind," and the first issue of "People Magazine." Also included are selected eighteenth and nineteenth-century newspapers from Hartford, Conn., Philadelphia, Pa., and Oneida, N.Y., and 1864-1866 newspapers from Campeche, Carmen, Merida, and Yucatan, Mexico. There is also a collection of copies of Augustus Le Plongeon and Alice Dixon Le Plongeon photographs compiled by archaeologist Lawrence G. Desmond. The photographs depict Chichen Itza, Uxmal, and other pre-Columbian archeological sites in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and Belize, 1873-1885. Also included are the papers of Jerome O. Kilmartin, a surveyor who mapped Chichen Itza and other Maya sites in the 1920s. The Kilmartin materials, 1922-2002, contain correspondence, diaries, photographs, and other items related to mapping projects at Chichen Itza, Mexico, and Lake Peten and Tikal, Guatemala, sponsored by the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Included is material relating to a 1929 flight over the Yucatan area by Charles Lindbergh and Mayanist Alfred Vincent Kidder. There are also papers of brothers William Law, printer and commission merchant, and Andrew Law, musician and composer, both of Cheshire, Conn. These materials, 1782-1820, consist mostly of letters written to the brothers. Letters to Andrew Law deal largely with the success of his singing schools and the sale of his tune-books. Other letters, especially from Drayton M. Curtis, offer criticism of Law's innovative staff-less notation style and his modification of popular hymns. Letters to William Law, representing Minturn and Champlin of New York in Copenhagen, Denmark, and at other ports in Europe during the War of 1812, generally discuss the impact of the war on international trade and the prospects for peace between Great Britain and the United States.

Elisha Kent Kane Papers, Bulk, 1843-1857, 1810-1953
Title:
Elisha Kent Kane Papers Bulk, 1843-1857 1810-1953
The most stellar member of a stellar family, Elisha Kent Kane was among the most popular American explorers of the mid-nineteenth century, a hero in the tragic mode. Born in Philadelphia in 1820, the son of John Kintzing Kane and Jane Duval Leiper, Kane studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania before earning a commission as a naval surgeon. While in the Navy, Kane embarked on the succession of voyages to exotic locales that became the basis for his extraordinary fame. In 1843, he attended Caleb Cushing's first diplomatic mission to China as ship's physician, and subsequently traveled to the Philippines and Western Africa. Distinguishing himself in the Mexican War, Kane's greatest fame came from two expeditions to the arctic, aiming to locate the lost explorer, Sir John Franklin and to explore for evidence of the open polar sea. Kane died in 1857 while attempting to organize a third arctic voyage. Part of the Kane Family Collection, the Papers of Elisha Kent Kane contain a mix of personal and family correspondence with correspondence relating to all of Kane's explorations. Intelligent, articulate and very much a romantic, Kane's letters are expressive and passionate. The collection provides fine documentation of youth, his relationship with the Spiritualist Margaret Fox, and of course his travels to China and off the coast of Africa in 1846. Kane's two expeditions to the arctic are particularly well documented, with correspondence, notes, logbooks, diaries, and sketches, as well as Kane's post-expedition notes, writings, and lectures recounting his experiences.

Mailliard Family papers, 1785-1927
Title:
Mailliard Family papers 1785-1927
The major part of these papers consist of correspondence, business papers and memorabilia relating to Joseph Bonaparte, ex-king of Naples and Spain. These were accumulated by Louis Hypolite Mailliard who acted as secretary to Bonaparte and was later executor of his estate. Most of these papers related to the affairs of the estate, including property in Bordentown, New Jersey, where Napoleon lived in exile from 1816 to 1839. A small amount of the correspondence as well as journals kept by Louis Mailliard from 1835-1844 concern Napoleon's personal affairs. Other members of the Bonaparte family figure in the correspondence as well since the Mailliard family acted as executor for them also. Included in the papers is a small amount of miscellaneous correspondence (1839-1857) of George Sumner including letters from Washington Irving, Alexis de Tocqueville, Henry W. Longfellow, William H. Prescott and William E. Gladstone.

Weeks, David, 1786-1834. David Weeks and family papers, 1782-1957 (bulk 1830-1957).
Title:
David Weeks and family papers, 1782-1957 (bulk 1830-1957).
Papers of David Weeks and family consist of personal and business papers of the Weeks, Moore, Conrad, and Gibson families of New Iberia, La., and southern Louisiana. A sizable portion of the papers document the life and work of William Weeks Hall, David Weeks' great-grandson, an artist, preservationist, and horticulturist who restored Shadows on the Teche and its gardens. Early papers in the collection, largely consisting of business papers and personal correspondence of the Weeks and Conrad families dating from the 1820s and 1830s, concern the operation of sugar and cotton plantations, relations with merchants and cotton factors, the sale of slaves, and the education of the Weeks children, many of whose letters are included. The papers also include a number of letters written from Evergreen Plantation near St. Francisville by Rachel Weeks O'Connor, David Weeks' sister. They concern business and family affairs, local news, slave conditions, and difficulties with overseers. Among the other papers from this period are letters by U.S. Senator Charles M. Conrad and by John Merriman, overseer of Grand Côte Plantation; reports of New Orleans factors John Linton and Lambeth and Thompson; and the will of David Weeks, dated 1834, which indicates the disposition of his property among his children. Numerous letters and documents dating from the period following Mary Clara Conrad Weeks' marriage to John Moore trace Moore's political activities as a congressman in the 1840s and 1850s. Included are petitions, letters of introduction, congratulatory messages from friends and colleagues, and letters from A.B. Roman, Joseph Walker, Thomas Curry, W.B. Prescott, W.M. Prescott, John Ray, and others. Another set of personal letters documents the education of Mary Weeks' children in Washington, D.C., and Virginia schools. Among the commercial papers dating from the 1850s are reports of factors Hall and Rodd, Miles Adams and Co., and Darby and Tremoulet. Many of Moore's letters concern the organization and construction of the New Orleans, Opelousas, and Great Western Railroad in 1851, on whose board of directors Moore served. Papers dating from the Civil War, during which several members of the Moore and Weeks families relocated to Texas, include military exemptions of overseers William Lourd and Lewis Moore, petitions for compensation of slaves who were lost or died while serving in the army, and political correspondence of Moore, who served as a member of the Louisiana State Legislature during the period. Among the post-Civil War documents are labor contracts with freedman, letters relating to the destruction of various Louisiana estates, and letters that describe the tribulations and upheavals of the Reconstruction period in Louisiana. Papers of William Weeks Hall consist largely of correspondence with friends and relations in Louisiana and colleagues in the arts. A sizable group of letters are written by Hall's aunt Harriet Weeks Torian ("Aunt Pattie"), who describes social life and family affairs in New Orleans. Another large set of correspondence consists of notes of thanks from friends and relatives for gifts of flowers, paintings, and other items and for Hall's hospitality during their visits to Shadows on the Teche. Other letters concern Hall's finances and investments, inquiries from scholars and sightseers about visiting Shadows on the Teche, painting, the performing arts, and horticulture. Notable correspondents include Henry Miller and James Laughlin, whose letters concern a profile that Miller wrote about Hall; Francis Biddle, attorney general under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt; director D.W. Griffith, who filmed The white rose at Shadows on the Teche in 1923; author and playwright Julian Street; Emily Post; Paul Froelich; Joseph Grégoire de Roulhac Hamilton; and Franklin C. Watkins. Much of the later correspondence concerns Hall's efforts to induce a government agency to assume custodianship of Shadows on the Teche. Also included is a receipt for payment of a sum collected at the presidential election polls at New Iberia to aid in the construction of the Washington Monument. The papers additionally include bank statements, canceled checks, and receipts for purchases of building supplies, furniture, groceries, flowers, and other goods; magazines and advertising circulars; greeting cards; numerous photographs of family members, friends, and Shadows on the Teche and its gardens; daybooks, ledgers, and bankbooks; and letters of condolence following Harriet Weeks Torian's death in 1945.

History of American literature : notes for lectures and a possible book, ca. 1950-1968.
470 5 x 8-inch cards, 169 written on both sides. Winters had said that he prepared for his essays by lecturing on a writer until he had the subject down and then wrote the essay in a draft or two. There are cards included that deal with writers whom he taught but about whom he never wrote an essay. Dates cover roughly from the beginning to about T.S. Eliot. An example of two major writers covered, one of whom Winters despised and one admired: there are 42 cards (51 sides) devoted to Ralph Waldo Emerson, and 42 cards (69 sides) devoted to Henry James. There are also some 14 sides devoted to Mexican literature.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.
