Gardiner was born in Boston and graduated Harvard College in 1816 and studied at Harvard Law School. He was admitted to the Suffolk County bar on 11 October 1819 and practiced law in Boston. He married a daughter of Col. Thomas Handasyd Perkins of Boston.
