Cleaveland, Parker, 1780-1858. Lecture notes, c. 1840?

Title: Lecture notes, c. 1840?

This volume consists of notes taken by an unidentified Bowdoin student on lectures given by Professor Cleaveland. There are four lectures on caloric (an imagined substance to which the phenomena of burning and oxidation were formerly attributed), a lecture on electricity, and fifteen pages of notes pertaining to "Questions upon Rawle on the Constitution of the United States." The student was most likely in his junior year, as for the period 1840 to 1843, according to the Bowdoin College catalog, the junior class was to take during the second term "electricity--magnetism--optics" and during the third term "Rawle's view on the Constitution of the United States."

This is primarily a collection of letters, with some additional documents, concerning Young's interest in botany, geology, mineralogy, and natural history. There is information about Bowdoin College, where he studied under Parker Cleaveland. There is also much on the natural history of Maine, where he was the State Botanist in 1847-1849, and also on the Bangor Natural History Society. There are materials on Brazil in relation to Young's service there as the U.S. consul to Rio Grande do Sul from 1863 to 1873. There are also letters from his brother, John C. Young, and his sister, Sarah Augusta Young.

Notebook of material covered in chemistry classes and experiments in New England colleges. Notebook begins with experiments on chemical action and affinity, following a brief mention of magnetic attraction. Other topics include carbonaion, oxygen gas, and galvanism. Notes are neither dated nor signed. Leaf 3 includes a heading: "Cleaveland's Lectures in the evening," probably referring to Bowdoin College professor Parker Cleaveland. At the end of the notebook, written upside down, are the names of the "Faculty of Medicine at Williams College -- Berkshire Medical Institution," and a note "number of Students in 1824-94." Following this list is information on fees, lectures, and "No. at Brunswick about 200" (Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Me.). This notes supplies the date.

Many of the letters were written by his mother Martha Bush ( - ) of Sterling, Mass., his brother Levi Bush, Jr. of North Brookfield, Mass., his sister Charity Pratt Bush Richardson (1789-1832) and her husband George Partridge Richardson (1785-1868) of Duxbury, Mass., Jotham Bush of Boston, Mass., and Parker Cleaveland (1780-1858) of Brunswick, Me. The correspondence deals with family matters.
