Papers, 1809-1848.

This collection of papers is comprised almost entirely of correspondence from relatives of John Bush. Many of the letters were written by his mother Martha Bush ( - ) of Sterling, Mass., his brother Levi Bush, Jr. of North Brookfield, Mass., his sister Charity Pratt Bush Richardson (1789-1832) and her husband George Partridge Richardson (1785-1868) of Duxbury, Mass., Jotham Bush of Boston, Mass., and Parker Cleaveland (1780-1858) of Brunswick, Me. The correspondence deals with family matters. There is some correspondence to Anne Bush from her sisters Eliza (1801- ) and Octavia ( - ) Wayne, and Mary (Wayne) Southwick (1797- ), wife of Jacob Southwick ( - ). Also included in the collection are some poems, themes, and short essays written at the time Bush attended Bowdoin College. John Bush (1792-1876), the son of Levi and Martha "Patty" (Ball) Bush, was born in Boylston, Mass., on 3 July 1792. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1814, and was a preceptor of an academy in Wiscasset, Me., around 1816. After 1817, Bush was a physician in Vassalboro, Me., for several years. Parker Cleaveland (1780-1858) was a professor at Bowdoin College from 1805 until his death in 1858. For the school terms 1840-41, 1841-42, and 1842-43, he was Professor of Chemistry, Mineralogy, and Natural Philosophy, as well as Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory, and Lecturer on Civil Polity.
