Edward Hitchcock was an eminent 19th-century scientist, minister and educator; principal of Deerfield Academy and Congregational minister in Conway, Mass.; variously professor of Chemistry, Natural History, Natural Theology and Geology at Amherst College, 1826-1864, and third president, 1845-1854. Appointed State Geologist of Massachusetts, 1830; Geologist of the first district of New York, 1836; and Geologist of Vermont, 1857. Orra White Hitchcock, whom he married in 1821, was a scholar and artist who accompanied her husband on many of his scientific expeditions and illustrated much of his work. Six children: Mary, Edward (AC 1849), Catharine Hitchcock Storrs, Jane Hitchcock Putnam, Charles (AC 1856), and Emily Hitchcock Terry.
