A collection of letters, manuscripts, and documents of prominent actors, actresses, and theatrical managers. Many of these are single, unrelated items. The largest body of correspondence is from the American actress, Charlotte Cushman (14 letters). Another figure of major interest is William Charles Macready, partly because of Miss Cushman's relationship to him (she toured with him for several years) and also as there are several of his letters. Sir Henry Irving, Edwin Forrest and James Mowatt are each represented by a few letters. A group of 8 unsigned letters may have been written by the famous singer, actress, and manager, Eliza Vestris. One box contains manuscripts of Samuel Coit, Charlotte Cushman, Clyde Fitch, Wallace Gould, Henry von Heiseler, E.H. Sothern, and Lester Wallack. Six boxes contain Augustin Daly's check stubs and bank books for Daly's Theatre, New York, for 1872-1899. (For additional Augustin Daly business records, see description sheets for Daly's Theatre Collection, X810.128/D15, & the Dramatic Library Collection shelf list). GEOFFROY: 86 letters removed from the Charles Michel Geoffroy, NOUVELLE GALERIE DES ARTISTES DRAMATIQUES, which contains his engravings of theatrical personalities. 15 of these letters are to Lʹeon Monval, stage director of the Paris Gymnase Dramatique, 1832-1852, and were transferred to the Dram. Mus.\Monval Coll. This is a collection of letters, 1828-1892, from performers, authors, directors, and those seeking boxes for the evening's entertainment. Among these are Jacques Offenbach, Pauline Viardot, Delestre Poirson, Marguerite George, Mlle Person, Rachel Fʹelix, and Edouard Plouvier. GILBERT: Misc. autographs and photographs collected by Anne J. Gilbert (Mrs George Henry). IRELAND: 494 autograph letters, manuscripts, and documents concerning the New York and London theater world, 1750-1899, from Ireland's own collection, which were bound in William Hartman Woodin's extra-illustrated copy of Ireland's RECORDS OF THE NEW YORK STAGE. The other items bound in this set (portraits, original drawings, playbills, views of theaters and localities referred to) are still bound in the set (in the Dramatic Museum book collection). MONVAL: 315 letters to Lʹeon Monval (see also GEOFFROY above). MOORE: 8 letters & telegrams, along with photographs, clippings, programs, and other printed materials relating to the American operatic and film star, Grace Moore, collected by June Lord-Wood, an admirer and music student.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Title: Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

The papers of the painter William Page and the Page family measure 11.06 linear feet and date from 1815 to 1947, with the bulk of papers dating from 1843 to 1892. Papers contain records related to the life and career of William Page, president of the National Academy of Design from 1871 to 1873 and prominent portraitist and art theorist of his day. Also found are records related to his wife's career as a writer and records documenting their personal lives and the lives of their family members. Types of documents found include personal documents and artifacts, correspondence, essays, lectures, diaries, poems, notes and notebooks, financial records, legal records, published works, clippings, catalogs, photographs, and artwork.Correspondence includes the personal and professional correspondence of William and Sophia Page, and their parents, siblings, and children. Significant correspondents include Thomas Hicks, Enoch Wood Perry, William Stark, Theodore Tilton, Lemuel Wilmarth, Wendell Phillips, William Walker Scranton, Francis G. Shaw; James Russell Lowell, Charles Frederick Briggs, George W. Curtis, Charlotte Cushman, Thomas K. Beecher, Mary Olmsted, and Bertha Olmsted. Writings include the essays and lectures of William Page, as written by him and revised by Sophia Page in the late 1870s, as well as Sophia's writings as a columnist in Europe in the 1850s. Notes, notebooks, diaries, and poems are also found. Personal Business Records include business records related to the sale and exhibition of artwork as well as financial and legal documents. A small number of memoranda and documents related to Page's work at the National Academy of Design are also found. Printed Materials include exhibition catalogs, published works by William and Sophia Page, and clippings and articles about Page. Photographs consist mainly of portraits, most of them mounted cabinet photographs or cartes-des-visites, some of which appear to have been used as studies for Page's painted portraits. Among those pictured are William Page, James Russell Lowell, Henry Ward Beecher, Reuben Fenton, Wendell Phillips, Charles Sumner, William R. O'Donovan, and William Lloyd Garrison. Many of the photographic portraits are unidentified. Artwork includes sketches, drawings, prints, and a small number of notes made by Page in the course of painting portraits.

depicts Osborn's life in New York, including pursuit of a job at various city newspapers, a failed attempt at running a newsstand at his boarding house and frequenting theaters, reading rooms, lectures, church services, and Republican meetings. He reports "seeing an shaking hands with Abraham Lincoln" during the president-elect's visit to the city; seeing Laura Keen, Charlotte Cushman, and other promenent actors; attending lectures by Horace Greeley and Rev. Chapin, attending Republican meetings at the Cooper Union, "making Union rosettes," etc. covers Osborn's life in New York, his trip home to Oak Hill in January; attending Washington birthday celebrations in New York and various political meetings, including the Union Defense Committee and "a meeting in Cooper Institute to express to the President and Congress a sentiment that Slavery should die now at the hands of the Government" where Carl Schurz was the keynote speaker; his decision to enlist in the army (which followed a prolonged disagreement over Sharp's rifles that the company preferred to the available Enfield rifles); and his military service. The diary includes accounts of the battles of the Peninsular, Antietam and Fredericksburg campaigns, an account of McClellan's farewell to the troops; political news, especially the 1862 elections. gives Osbonr's accoutns of the the battles of Chancellorville, Gettysburg, Bristoe, and Mine Run Campaigns, although, having secured a position of the regimental clerk, he seems to have assumed the role of a detached observer. It also includes brief accounts of the trial of John F. Porter and the 1863 elections and detailed descriptions of Osborn's application for an officer's position in a black regiment and studying for and passing officer's examintion in Washington, D.C. in December. follow Osborn's journey from Brownsville, Tex. home and search for a job in the Midwest. After his discharge at Brownsville, Tex., In New Orleans, he "subbed" at the Southern Star until the newspaper went "part French" and he lost his job. He then moved to to Jackson, Miss., Canton, Miss., Grand Junction, Tenn., and Memphis, Tenn. where he found "prospects for work encouraging, but must join Union, paid fee & took out working card." At the end of March, he left of St. Louis, Mo., where he remained until the end of April working at The Press and frequenting the city attractions. From May to August, he made his way through Iowa, Minnesota, & Wisconsin, mostly "subbing" at local newspapers (but at certain point resorting to "strawberring). He arrived to his hometown in August, and soon left for New York City, and then on to Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and Winona (works at the Atlas). In 1868 he and his young wife moved to Minneapolis.

Family history written for her children, covering the years 1840-1877. The narrative contains anecdotes of the Dorr and Freeman families of Boston and the Lawrence family of N.Y. The author recalls growing up in Boston, her education, notable social events and life during the Civil War. Her brother, Wilder, served in the Mass. 45th Reg. and died in Boston of disease contracted in the South. Her sister, Florence Freeman ("Flori"), was an artist who lived and worked in Italy with the sculptor Harriet Hosmer and the actress Charlotte Cushman. Susan Freeman married Richard B. Lawrence, an insurance broker, in 1866. They moved to South Orange N.J. and in 1873 removed to England where he served as agent for the sale of American land. She describes life in London in detail. In 1875 the family moved to West Virginia where R.B. Lawrence attempted to establish a sheep farm. The account is illustrated fully with tipped-in carte-de-visite photographs of family members (including one of Florence Freeman), photographs of London, letters (1904, 1908) to her son H. (Harry) Hooper Lawrence, a plan of the West Virginia house, and other material.

Title: Harvard Theatre Collection of figurines

Contains figurines, statuettes, and sculpted scenes relating to theatre and dance, particularly ballet. Numerous figurines specifically depict nineteenth century ballerinas, and further figurines relate to Shakespearean productions. Most of the figurines and sculptures relate to known actors and dancers, as well as known productions, though this is not always the case. The majority of the figurines appear to be from the nineteenth century, though there are some dated in the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. Many are undated.

Album containing 135 letters including ALS and TLS, and 17 portraits, assembled by an unidentified collector. The letters were written by American and international performing artists, writers, directors, and producers, including Edwin Booth, Fanny Kemble, Enrico Caruso, and Loie Fuller. Each writer is represented by no more than two letters. Many of the letters were written to Edwin H. Low, a steamship and tourist agent, and his wife. Letters are tipped and laid in. Also tipped in are 17 portraits in the form of clippings, engravings, and one carte-de-visite of performers including E. H. Southern, John Gilbert, and Charlotte Cushman.
