Sir Herbert Edward Read was a poet, art critic and champion of modern art in Britain. He produced approximately 1,150 titles on a broad range of topics. His 80 monographs include: 26 on art and artists; 14 on literary criticism; 13 collections of poetry; 10 on politics, primarily on anarchism; 7 on "belles lettres" and biography; 5 on education, most notably "Education Through Art"; and 5 autobiographies.
Sir Herbert Read was a poet and critic, known for his support of 20th century art and literature movements. Born in Yorkshire, his father's death sent young Read to an orphan's school; he worked as a bank clerk before entering Leeds University in 1912, where his diverse course of study had an enormous influence on his development. Service in World War I left him decorated and disillusioned, but fuelled his career as a poet and essayist; he held various positions after the war, but was primarily a poet and critic. He supported modern movements in writing and painting, and served as a vital liaison with continental influences, shaping the British art world during the period following World War II with his writing and influence. Despite his professed anarchist tendencies, he accepted a knighthood for his service to literature in 1953.
Epithet: author and art critic

Berry, Francis. Papers, ca. 1928-1961.
Title:
Papers, ca. 1928-1961.
The papers of Francis Berry, ca. 1928-1961, document Berry's development as a poet from his earliest poetic endeavors to his mature creations and also document his concerns as a critic of poetry. The Poetry series consists of manuscripts of Berry's poetry and verse drama, including some unpublished work. There are holograph and typed drafts of published poems, most signed and some dated by the author, from Snake in the Moon, Fall of a Tower, The Galloping Centaur, and Morant Bay and Other Poems as well as fragments of "The Iron Christ." Berry's unpublished poems are also well represented. Berry's published and unpublished verse drama is represented by the following works: Beauty and the Beast, Conversation Piece, The Death of Beowulf, Hans and Gretchen, The Harpies, and The Sleeping Beauty. The Critical Works series consists of manuscripts of Berry's critical assessments of specific writers and technical studies of the mechanics of poetic creation. There are holograph and typed notes and drafts of most of Berry's major academic work, including Herbert Read, Poetry and the Physical Voice, Poets' Grammar: Person, Time and Mood in Poetry, and "Shelley and the Future Tense," an article published in Orpheus.

Burnshaw, Stanley, 1906-2005. Papers, 1927-1987, (bulk 1945-1987).
Title:
Papers, 1927-1987, (bulk 1945-1987).
The Stanley Burnshaw papers consist of notes, outlines, research materials, typescript drafts, galleys, page proofs, clippings, and correspondence, most of which relate to Burnshaw's works, ca. 1945-1986. Extensive files are present for The Poem Itself, Robert Frost Himself, and The Seamless Web. Other works which are represented in this collection include Caged in an Animal's Mind, The Hero of Silence, Mirages, The Modern Hebrew Poem Itself, The Refusers, The Revolt of the Cats in Paradise, and Varieties of Literary Experience. Additionally, Burnshaw's own activities as an editor and publisher (often in conjunction with his duties for Holt, Rinehart and Winston, including projects involving Edward Dahlberg, Nahum Goldmann, David Ben-Gurion, Laura (Riding) Jackson, Christina Stead, Lionel Trilling, and Louis Untermeyer) are documented. Burnshaw's correspondence frequently consists of detailed exchanges about work-in-progress with other writers, editors, publishers, scholars, and critics. There are substantial files of correspondence, sometimes reflecting personal relationships as well as professional ties, with such varied figures as T. Carmi, Edward Dahlberg, James Daly, James Dickey, Dudley Fitts, Robert Frost, Norman Fruman, Nahum Goldmann, Josephine Herbst, Laura (Riding) Jackson, Haniel Long, John Frederick Nims, Paul Rogers, Gregor Sebba, Karl Shapiro, André Spire, Christina Stead, Lionel Trilling, Louis Untermeyer, Wade Van Dore, and others. The papers also contain information about Burnshaw's childhood and family heritage in letters, notes, and papers of his father and other family members, which were gathered as source material for The Refusers and My Friend, My Father.

Title:
Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976).
The John Pudney Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976), include drafts, notes, printer's copies, galleys, research material, notebooks, diaries, and correspondence. Manuscripts for Pudney's poetry collections and chapbooks include Collected Poems, 1957, and Selected Poems, 1967-1973, as well as proofs for Beyond this Disregard (1943), South of Forty (1943), Spandrels: Poems and Ballads (1969), and Living in a One-Sided House (1976). Manuscripts for early and/or unpublished later poems, 1926-1968, are also present. Some materials such as those for Ten Summers: Poems, 1933-1943 include only notes and correspondence. Manuscripts of Pudney's fiction include The Accomplice (1950), Shuffley Wanderers: An Entertainment (1948), and 'Sleadley' (nd). Materials for such works as The Net (1952), Trespass in the Sun (1957), and Home and Away: An Autobiographical Gambit (1960), include only critical notes and correspondence. Nonfiction materials include the proposal and correspondence for The Thomas Cook Story (1953). These materials, which concern the British temperance movement, consist primarily of the mid-19th century letters and ephemera of Thomas Cook, George Cruikshank, and Emily Ellis. Also present are the manuscript for Lewis Carroll and His World (1976), a working notebook, 1947 on the history of the British Air Force, and numerous materials for the revised edition of The Smallest Room (1954, 1959), a humorous history of sanitation and water closets. The Correspondence series, 1937-1962, primarily concerns the revision of The Smallest Room. Other correspondence also describes the nature of Pudney's other literary endeavors and editorial duties, while letters from George Barker and H.E. Bates are of a more personal nature. Other significant correspondents include Kingsley Amis, Malcolm Arnold, John Betjeman, Benjamin Britten, Jocelyn Brooke, Sir Winston Churchill, Cynthia Coville (Secretary to Queen Mary), Oliver Dawney (Secretary to H.M. Queen Elizabeth), C. Day Lewis, T.S. Eliot, John Lehmann, Compton Mackenzie, Wolf Mankowitz, Lady Ottoline Morrell, Laurence Olivier, J.B. Julian Sorell Huxley papers
Title:
Julian Sorell Huxley papers
The collection documents Huxley's role as a synthesizer and educator who influenced thinking in many areas, including studies of taxonomy and relative growth, pioneering work in ethology, and important writing in the early twentiety-century synthesis of Mendelian genetics and Darwinian theory. His belief that evolution was not only biological but social and cultural as well led to interests in eugenics, population control, conservation and humanist movements. Linking scientists, science and other fields and science and the public, Huxley corresponded with such scientists, artists, writers and social figures as Kenneth Clark, J.B.S. Haldane, H.J. Muller, Bertrand Russell, Stephen Spender and H.G. Wells. Other materials found in the papers include original writings, publications of others, organizational, conference and travel materials, personal diaries, photographs and memorabilia. Correspondence forms approximately one-third of the papers. It exemplifies the shape of the collection as a whole in that its volume increases steadily from the early years onward, peaking in the 1950s and 1960s and diminishing sharply during the times of Sir Julian's depressions. The most substantive part of the collection, the correspondence, not only includes letters from many twentieth-century intellectual, social and cultural leaders, but also provides the most information about Sir Julian and his myriad activities. Sir Julian's own writings -- published and unpublished - comprise another one-third of the collection.

Zukofsky, Louis, 1904-1978. Louis Zukofsky Collection, 1910-1985.
Title:
Louis Zukofsky Collection, 1910-1985.
Holograph and typescript manuscripts and correspondence make up the bulk of the Louis Zukofsky Collection, 1910-1985. The Works Series covers Zukofsky's writing career thoroughly between 1921 and 1968, including the "A" series of poems from "A"-1 to "A"-21/Rudens, typescripts and galley proofs for all three versions of ALL: THE COLLECTED SHORT POEMS, and various individual poems, short stories, and radio scripts. Of particular interest are the working notebooks in which Zukofsky and his wife translated CATULLUS. The Letters Series is relatively small but does contain a large collection of letters from Zukofsky to fellow poets Cid Corman, Lorine Niedecker, and Carl Rakosi. Most of the letters in this series are personal, however, some communications with publishers and organziations are present. The Recipient Series is much larger and contains substantial numbers of letters to Zukofsky from Basil Bunting, Cid Corman, Guy Davenport, Hayden Carruth, Robert Creeley, Hugh Kenner, Marianne Moore, Samuel Newberry, Lorine Niedecker, Ezra Pound, Mary Ellen Solt, Jonathan Williams, William Carlos Williams, and many others. The Miscellaneous Series is composed largely of works by other authors and correspondence between other people. There are three theses on Zukofsky, several reviews of Zukofsky's publications, works by Lorine Niedecker, and a series of holograph poems by Whittaker Chambers in a travel diary. Also included are a few newspaper clippings, notes on the publication of his works, and an honorary degree from Bard College. The Subject File Series represents additional materials received after the first four series were cataloged. Interfiled manuscripts and correspondence were left in their original order rather than distributing them through the collection. Present are holographs and typescripts of Zukofsky's later works, including "A"-22 through "A"-24, LITTLE, FOR CAREENAGERS, AUTOBIOGRAPHY, and the French translation for FIRST HALF OF "A"-9. Material for "A"-24 is particularly complete, ranging from holograph notes in a spiral notebook to the typescript scores for individual characters, and including production notes. Celia Zukofsky's listing of Zukofsky's works, titled A BIBLIOGRAPHY, is also found here along with the correspondence which led to its publication. Correspondence regarding CATULLUS and ARISE! ARISE! is also included, as is the correspondence between Zukofsky and about a dozen institutions where he gave readings.

Manning, Hugo. Papers, 1942-1977.
Title:
Papers, 1942-1977.
Comprise correspondence, diaries, notebooks containing untitled poems, a book of sketches, and manuscripts of Manning's major poetical works. The secret sea is represented by several versions, including a version set to music by Denis ApIvor entitled Chorales. Twenty-eight diaries record daily events from 1957-77, and include poetry and drawings. Much of the correspondence simply thanks Manning for sending copies of his poetry, but letters from Henry Miller encourage him to write prose and say "those things which seem incommunicable," while letters from Mario Praz discuss the influence of Borges and T.S. Eliot on Manning's poetry.

After 1986, the Philby correspondence includes references to the visits Greene paid Philby in Moscow. The collection contains manuscripts of some of Greene's major works including The captain and the enemy and The tenth man, as well as theater scripts such as For whom the bell chimes. Title:
Photographs, 1919-1980.
While there are too many photographs relating to individual anarchists and organizations (listed below) to give an account of each, a few must be specifically mentioned. Mollie Steimer (1897- July 23, 1980) was a lifelong anarchist activist who began her political career by opposing United States intervention in Soviet Russia during the First World War. In the course of this, she was arrested under the Sedition Act, and became one of the defendants in the landmark free speech case, Abrams v. United States. She, like her good friends Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman, was deported from the United States to the Soviet Union. She was later also deported from the Soviet Union. Senya Fleshin, an anarchist whom she met while in the Soviet Union, became her lifelong companion. He later became a photographer, and they operated a photography studio, "SEMO" (Senya and Mollie) in Mexico City. (For more information on Steimer, and for more photographs of Steimer and her friends, see memorial pamphlet, Mollie Steimer--Toda Una Vida De Lucha: La Rebelion De Una Anarquista Condenada Por Ambos Imperios (Mexico 12, D.F.: Ediciones Antorcha, 1980).). Rudolph Rocker (1873-1958) was a German anarchist who became enamoured of Yiddish language and literature, and became one of its primary exponents and champions; he was responsible, also, in his capacity of editor of important Yiddish language publications, for having getting translated and publishing for the first time in Yiddish many of the great writers of nineteenth century literature. He was also a leader in the Jewish anarchist movement, and in the Jewish labor movement in England in the years before World War I. Milly Witkop Rocker was his companion (it is said that for reasons of principle they were never legally married). Valerio Isca is an Italian immigrant anarchist, who was, among other things, very active in the defense of Sacco and Vanzetti. He is a photographer, and many of his photographs are represented in this collection. Rose Pesotta (1896-1965), a friend of Mollie Steimer, was an anarchist who was also an organizer for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union for many years; she also served as its vice-president for a number of years. The Freie Arbeiter Stimme (Free Voice of Labor) was a leading, and when it ceased publication, the oldest, Yiddish anarchist newspaper (1890-1977). Some photographs in the collection are of various individuals involved in the newspaper and of annual picnics given by the paper. The Mohegan Colony, at Crompond, New York, was founded in 1923. The community, which at one time convered as much as 450 acres, was a liberal and radical one (many anarchists were among its residents, including Harry Kelly, and Valerio and Ida Isca) established (as outlined in its constitution) "to free ourselves and our children from at least some of the diseases of city life; to give free rein in our thoughts and ideals; to offer our children a libertarian education which will fit them to be fighters for a better world."

Other art business papers include art sales receipt books (1931-1936); press clippings and rare surrealist periodicals (Styx, NEON) and brochures; ca. 200 exhibition announcements (1920-1976); and journal articles by and about Mesens. Mesens' address book from the 1920s contains nearly 1,000 names. Thirteen copper or zinc plates of various artists' graphic work may have been used to create exhibition announcements.
