Albert Galloway Keller papers, 1888-1956
Title:
Albert Galloway Keller papers 1888-1956
The papers consist of correspondence, writings, student and teaching files, and miscellanea documenting the personal life and professional career of Albert G. Keller, a sociologist, author, and student and colleague of William Graham Sumner. Keller frequently corresponded with individuals on the subject of Sumner, and Yale University figures such as Arthur T. Hadley, James Rowland Angell, and Charles Seymour often felt Keller's displeasure over the University's treatment of the Sumner legacy. He also corresponded with colleagues and former students, Sumner biographers, and family members. Files relating to the William Graham Sumner Club, which he helped found, are also included. Drafts of several published and unpublished writings and many student gradebooks detail his literary and teaching activities.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Title:
Letters of Worthington Chauncey Ford [manuscript], 1886-1900.
In a letter dated June 19, 1900, Ford commends to Wendell Phillips Garrison, his brothers, and Helen Villard two enclosed letters, both dated January 1886, from Samuel Joseph May to James Freeman Clarke concerning William Lloyd Garrison. May's first letter, dated January 12, 1886, recommends the writings of William Lloyd Garrison and praises him for his leadership in the anti-slavery movement. It criticizes American churches for not unifying against slavery, and condemns the Unitarians for not paying due respect to Garrison's influence in the anti-slavery movement. It also compares Garrison to Peter the Hermit; quotes Caleb Stetson; and frequently mentions William Henry Channing and C. Bartol and mentions others. May's second letter, dated January 16, 1886, refers to and praises a book by Theodore Parker, edited by Clarke; asks Clarke to acknowledge Garrison's influence and spirit; and describes problems between Garrison and the Unitarians.

Contains family correspondence including the courtship letters, 1834, of W.L. Garrison Sr. and Helen Benson Garrison; correspondence on his anti-slavery work and his periodical the Liberator; condolence letters on the death of his wife; and a scrapbook of his obituaries. Wright, Chauncey, 1830-1875. Papers, 1850-1875
Title:
Chauncey Wright Papers 1850-1875
A philosopher, metaphysician, and mathematician, Chauncey Wright graduated from Harvard in 1852 and taught occasionally at the College while employed as a "computer" with the . A positivist and empiricist in the British tradition, he exerted an influence on the development of American Pragmatism through his younger friends William James, Charles S. Peirce, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, but is perhaps best remembered as one of the earliest and most able defenders of Darwinism and Darwinian natural selection. The bulk of the 137 items in the Wright Papers is comprised of personal letters addressed to Wright during the adult years of his brief life. From the typical letters of a college student, the correspondence branches out to touch upon philosophy, mathematics, and Wright's meeting with Darwin in 1872. Among the more prominent correspondents are C. S. Peirce, Charles Eliot Norton, Francis Bowen, Susan and J. Peter Lesley, and James Bradley Thayer and William Sydney Thayer. Winfrid Alden Stearns Papers, 1871-1906
Title:
Winfrid Alden Stearns Papers 1871-1906
Winfrid Alden Stearns (1852-1909) was an amateur naturalist, ornithologist, and ethnologist who corresponded with several prominent experts in the natural sciences. Among his works were a collaboration with surgeon and naturalist Elliot Coues, (1881-1883) and the self-published (1895) that was heavily criticized by university-trained naturalists. The collection consists of original letters with details about Stearns' publications, specimen donations, and ornithological work from 1871 to 1906. There are letters concerning his editorial collaboration with Coues and others, Stearn's works, and Stearns' travels to Newfoundland. Of particular interest are two letters from Charles Bendire accusing Stearns of inaccurate classification of specimens and poor proofreading of his manuscripts. (Both Stearns and Bendire worked with Coues.) The collection contains a picture of the museum Stearns curated in the 1880's. New England Bird Life A Manual of Ornithology
