Curator of the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum; Winterthur, Delaware.
Henry Francis du Pont was born at Winterthur, Del., on May 27, 1880, the son of Henry Algernon du Pont and the great-grandson of E. I. du Pont, the founder of the Du Pont Company. He was a director of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company from 1915 until his death in 1969, and a member of its executive committee (1916-1943); a director of the Wilmington Trust Company (1919-1969); and a director of General Motors (1918-1944) and a member of its finance committee (1918-1937). He was a major collector of American decorative arts of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the collection, housed in his home, became the Winterthur Museum in 1951.
The Antique Dealers papers is a separate collection of records that track the buying habits of Henry Francis du Pont and what dealers he patronized, such as J.A. Lloyd Hyde, Israel Sack, Joseph Kindig, and many oothers. The objects he bought are now in the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum.
Curator of the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum; Winterthur, Del.
Henry Francis du Pont, son of Col. Henry Algernon and Mary Pauline Foster du Pont, was born on May 27, 1880 at Winterthur, De. He attended Groton and Harvard University. In 1914, he assumed management of the Winterthur Farms and started an active breeding program which resulted in a world renown Holstein herd. Du Pont began collecting antiques around 1923 after a visit to the Webb estate in Shelburne, Vt. The product of his collecting, Winterthur Museum, opened in 1951. At the same time, he took an active interest in horticulture and expanded the gardens at Winterthur. Du Pont was active on many museum boards and committees. He served as chair of the Fine Arts Committee for the White House, a board member of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and a board member of the New York Botanical Garden, among others.
In addition to his estate at Winterthur, du Pont owned Chestertown House at Southampton, Long Island, a house in Boca Grande, Fl., and an apartment on Park Ave., New York City. On June 24, 1916, he married Ruth Wales of Hyde Park, N.Y.; they had two daughters. Du Pont died on April 11, 1969 at Winterthur.

Quimby, Ian M. G. Silver research papers, ca.1962-ca.1996.
Title:
Silver research papers, ca.1962-ca.1996.
The bulk of the papers relate to American silversmiths of the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries. This material was probably collected while Mr. Quimby was researching his book American Silver at Winterthur, although he also gathered information about silver owned by other museums. He collected biographical information on the silversmiths as well as information about their marks and the items which they made. Some photographs are included in the silversmith files, while other photos and slides are filed separately. Some information about the publication of the book American Silver at Winterthur is found in the papers. The collection also includes information about the acquisition of silver by Henry Francis du Pont; all this information is believed to be copies of materials in the Winterthur Archives. Mr. Quimby was interested in the technical analysis of the content of silver made by early American silversmiths, and the results of testing undertaken by Winterthur's Conservation Lab are included. As well, the collection contains copies of talks and lectures given by Mr. Quimby; articles written by him; information pertaining to professional organizations to which he belonged, especially the Decorative Arts Society (DAS) and the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH); and some personal correspondence and other personal papers. As a side line, Mr. Quimby assisted Pamela Cunningham Copeland with the editing and publishing of her memoirs, and copies of the galleys and correspondence about this project are found.

Consists of correspondence, postcards, and invitations that reflect the family relationships that Evelina du Pont had with Henry Francis du Pont, Ruth Wales du Pont, Ruth Ellen du Pont, and Pauline Louise du Pont. The trip included visits to Ceylon, Trinidad, India, China, Japan, and Brazil. The collection also contains early letters written by Evelina's great grandfather, Jechonias Wood, and other members of the Wood family. Also present is an invitation to Evelina from Louisa d'Andelot du Pont to join the family for breakfast at St. Amour to honor the 100th anniversary of the arrival of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours in America. William Jacob Robbins (1890-1978, APS 1941) was a botanist and physiologist. From 1937 to 1957 he was director of the New York Botanical Garden. His research focused on culture methods of plants in relation to biochemistry and nutrition, especially on the synthetic abilities of fungi. His studies paralleled the scientific agenda of the Rockefeller Foundation, an agency with which he was closely associated for years as adviser and trustee. He was perhaps the most influential botanist in the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) during the early postwar era, and a principal participant in the plans for the global reconstruction of science. Robbins served as president of the American Philosophical Society from 1956 to 1959.

Bullitt family. Bullitt family papers - Oxmoor collection, 1683-2003.
Title:
Bullitt family papers - Oxmoor collection, 1683-2003.
Papers of an early Louisville family that settled in the area in 1783. The collection centers around Alexander Scott Bullitt (1762-1816) and his descendants William C. Bullitt (1793-1877), John C. Bullitt (1824-1902), Thomas W. Bullitt (1838-1910), William Marshall Bullitt (1873-1957), and Thomas W. Bullitt (1914-1991). Their papers reflect their life on the Bullitt estate Oxmoor, their legal careers, as well as their participation in politics, the military and national events. In addition to the papers of the above individuals there are papers re: earlier ancestors, as well as collateral families, such as the Breckinridge, Christian, Fry, Iasigi, Logan, Marshall, Speed, Walker, and Wallace families. William Marshall Bullitt compiled this collection of his ancestors and there are numerous folders concerning genealogy, as well as information on the Bullitt family residence Oxmoor, the Oxmoor steeplechase, and Citizen's Fidelity Bank, which the family was instrumental in establishing. Of particular interest are the letters and papers of William and Annie Henry Christian dated 1764-1790. Their papers give insight into the life of Kentucky pioneers, the early salt industry, and Christian's service in the Virginia militia. Their daughter Priscilla married Alexander Bullitt. The papers of Alexander Bullitt dated 1782-1816 include information on his acquisition of Oxmoor, farming, and his participation in the 1792 and 1799 state constitutional conventions. William C. Bullitt's papers dated 1814-1872 include correspondence, legal papers, receipts, and land papers re: his plantations Oxmoor and Cottonwood. John C. Bullitt's papers include numerous letters, primarily from his mother Mildred and his sisters, dated 1838-1851. These letters provide descriptions of antebellum Louisville and details about everyday life on a plantation in Kentucky including the lives of enslaved African Americans. These letters also included references to presidential elections, local politics, society, and the Mexican War. Also of interest are the Civil War letters and narratives of Thomas W. Bullitt, James B. Bullitt, and Henry M. Bullitt. The three brothers served under John Hunt Morgan during the war. Thomas W. Bullitt's papers dated 1919-1991 include information re: his experiences during World War II. This collection includes materials concerning every era of American history, from the colonial era to the Vietnam Conflict. See collection's finding aid for additional information.
