Smith, William, 1727-1803. Papers, 1690-1871 (bulk 1748-1804).
Title:
Papers, 1690-1871 (bulk 1748-1804).
The William Smith Papers primarily document the public and political activities of William Smith from 1753 to 1775. William Smith's staunch support and advocacy of the Penn family, the Proprietors of colonial Pennsylvania, is well documented in the collection. There is extensive correspondence between William Smith and Thomas Penn for the years 1754 to 1770 which provides detailed reports of, and observations on, the state of the Proprietor's political interest in Pennsylvania. William Smith's staunch support and advocacy of the Penn family, the Proprietors of colonial Pennsylvania, is well documented in the collection. In addition to the Penn correspondence, the collection contains the legal briefs, petitions, and supporting documentation used to defend Smith in the libel suit brought by the Pennsylvania Assembly for his pamphleteering against it. The role of William Smith as an educator and fundraiser looms large in the collection, particularly in his correspondence with Richard Peters, the head of the College's Board of Trustees. The Peters correspondence covers the period 1762 to 1764, during which Smith conducted his extensive tour of Great Britain raising money for the College. The fund raising trip is also documented in a diary covering the months of November and December 1762. In addition to the correspondence with Thomas Penn, William Smith's work as Provost is found in four notebooks of the commencement exercises of 1765 to 1768. Smith's interest in education, in general, is documented in the bound book of minutes and correspondence of the German Free School movement conducted in Pennsylvania from 1754 to 1756. The collection also contains a small number of letters between various members of William Smith's family. The largest of these are between of his wife, Rebecca Moore Smith, and Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson. Some very personal reflections on the passing of William Smith's wife can be found in his correspondence with Benjamin Rush. There is also some correspondence of Charles Smith, William's son. The family correspondence stretches into the first three decades of the nineteenth century. In addition to the family correspondence there are some literary writings, primarily poems, authored both by Smith himself and by other members of his family.

The collection contains the will of Admiral Sir William Penn, 1669; William Penn's instructions, 1689, to William Blackwell concerning the Proprietor's estate at Pennsbury; the marriage certificate of William and Hannah Penn, 1695; an inventory of Pennsylvania title papers and administrative records in the Proprietors' Philadelphia office, 1741, prepared by Richard Peters and Lyndford Lardner for Thomas Penn; letters, memoranda, and copies of wills of several Penn family members, 1682-1875, concerning family lands and forfeited estates in Pennsylvania. The collection also includes letters and personal financial papers, 1774-1830, of Archbishop Stuart, containing family, political, and ecclesiastical news, as well as letters to and from his grandson, William Stuart, 1870-1888, concerning the latters's Irish estates. Present, too, is a group of letters, 1805-1837, addressed to William Granville, natural son of Granville Penn, Sophia's brother. Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson papers, 1752-1795
Title:
Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson papers 1752-1795
Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson (1737-1801), considered to be the outstanding female poet of her place and time, was a leader in the literary world of colonial Pennsylvania and an avid writer, who composed poems, songs, travel accounts and other writings, referencing literature, natural history, religion, politics and current events. This collection consists of six volumes of writings which probably represent all of her work, most of which is unpublished. Researchers interested in Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson, women authors in colonial America and the early United States, or a female commentary on contemporary events will find this collection to be extremely valuable.

Title:
Report of the Commissioners to the Albany Congress : ms., 1754 Aug. 6.
Report of John Penn and Richard Peters, Pennsylvania commissioners to the Albany Congress, to Lt. Gov. James Hamilton and the Council, 6 Aug. 1754, on their purchase of more land beyond the Susquehanna from the Six Nations. The report begins with accounts of other negotiations for the same or adjacent lands which were in progress or rumored on their arrival, especially with agents of Connecticut, and consultations with various tribal leaders. Following is an account of part of the proceedings of the Albany Congress on 30 June, when it was decided not to make the Pennsylvania sale part of the Congressional proceedings. Next are accounts of the commissioners' meetings on 5 and 6 July with representatives of the Six Nations, in which they reached an agreement for the purchase of land up to the western border of Penn's grant, and the text of the deed from the Six Nations to proprietors Thomas and Richard Penn. Next is an account of a meeting on 9 July at which the participants ratified the treaty of 1736 (full text and endorsement given) whereby the Six Nations agreed not to sell any land within the boundaries of Penn's grant to anyone but the proprietors. There follows a list of Indians present, by tribe and/or location, with their original and European names. The report concludes with a statement that the Connecticut agents were satisfied of Penn's claim and agreed to stop their negotiations for the same land. Persons prominently involved include commissioners John Penn, Richard Peters, Isaac Norris, and Benjamin Franklin; Hendrick, the Mohawk sachem and chief spokesman for the Six Nations; William Franklin; Thomas Pownall; and Conrad Weiser, interpreter.

Burd-Shippen Papers, 1708-1792
Title:
Burd-Shippen Papers 1708-1792
James Burd (1726-1793) was well-known in colonial Pennsylvania through his role in the French and Indian War, as well as his connections to many of the colony's leading families (most notably the Shippen family). Initially starting out as a merchant in Philadelphia, Burd became increasingly involved with colonial affairs after moving to Lancaster County with his family in 1752. It would be on the frontier where Burd would make his mark first as a soldier, and later as a magistrate. The Burd-Shippen Papers consist mainly of letters and business documents sent to James Burd, with the bulk of the collection relating to the French and Indian War, 1754-1763, in which Burd served as an officer commanding troops at Fort Augusta and elsewhere. The 2.5 linear feet in the collection reflects all aspects of Burd's life in Pennsylvania as a merchant, soldier, and magistrate; as well as his involvement with the Shippen family professionally and personally. Intermixed with items sent to Burd are receipts to his wife Sarah Shippen Burd, and correspondence between Edward Shippen and James Hamilton regarding land matters and Indian affairs in Lancaster.

Ferdinand J. Dreer autograph collection 1492-1925
Ferdinand Julian Dreer’s chief hobby was collecting autographs. He started with two documents and over time he was able to amass more than 15,000 items from some of the world’s most prominent and intriguing public figures. Owing to this interest, Dreer became acquainted with many people in the world of arts and letters, politics, education, clergy, business, and international affairs. As he was aware of such a collection’s potential impact on scholarship and society, Dreer donated all of his holdings to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, with which he had been associated for many years as the institution’s vice president.

Letterbook, 1752-1772.
This volume consists of copies of Thomas Penn's letters, 1752-1772, primarily written to Peters and copied by Thomas Balch (1821-1877), Pennsylvania historian, during the 1850s. The originals are in the possession of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The letters are replete with information on colonial history and government, including negotiations with the Indian Confederation, the collecting of quitrents, ejections for nonpayment, the organization and sale of lands, street planning, the arrival of German immigrants, provincial elections, Penn's disputes with the assembly, the drawing of the Mason-Dixon line, and Penn's frequent conflicts with Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790). Many letters refer to the French and Indian War, including the British government's preparations, Gen. Edward Braddock's (1695-1755) arrival in America and defeat at Fort Duquesne, the raising of colonial regiments and supplies for Braddock's troops, and the Indian menace. The letters also contain comments on the repeal of the Stamp Act, the demands for Penn's surrender of his proprietary government, the organization of Pennsylvania College, and Penn's politically troublesome nephew, Gov. John Penn (1729-1795).

Chew family. Chew Family papers, 1659-1986 (bulk 1740-1930).
Title:
Chew Family papers, 1659-1986 (bulk 1740-1930).
The Chew Family Papers is a remarkable collection due to its range, depth, and scope. Nearly every major subject in early American history is touched upon in these papers; the date span of the collection allows for a study of the trajectory of American social, political, and economic development through the lens of one prominent family. This collection is the product of seven generations of the Chew family's professional and personal lives. Many of the papers were created during the late eighteenth through mid-nineteenth centuries, but they continued to be used over the course of the next one hundred years by the family as they settled estates, sold off land, and sought to settle debts. While the papers were an integral part of the management of the family's financial affairs, the Chews also prized the papers as part of their heritage. Around the time of the Centennial celebration in the United States, the Chews began to recognize the legacy of their family in the early history of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania, and spent a great deal of time inventorying and describing the contents of the papers. The Chew family became archivists of their own records, maintaining the collection as a whole and retrieving portions of the papers that had been lost or sold during the nineteenth century. They stored some records in safe deposit boxes, and other portions of the collection were arranged methodically throughout Cliveden. They created extensive descriptions of where groups of materials were stored and arranged them by family member, an arrangement that has largely been maintained. Some of these inventories can be found within the collection; others are housed in the collection files, which may be accessed by asking an archivist for permission to view these files. The materials in this collection cover a wide range of topics, reflecting the Chew family's involvement in legal, business, political, private, and social spheres. This extensive collection documents the lives of the Maryland and Pennsylvania branches of the Chew family through seven generations. In addition to the collection's emphasis on the Chew family and their connections within Philadelphia's elite, the papers provide a perspective on the lives of many of the Chews'slaves and servants, and offer insights into family relationships, women's history, health, religion, legal history, the Revolutionary and Civil wars, politics, trade, land management and settlement, surveying, industrialization, and the growth and development of the city of Philadelphia. The focus of the collection revolves around Benjamin Chew, his son Benjamin Jr. and his offspring. Both father and son were influential lawyers, and together amassed large quantities of land in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey. Benjamin Chew Jr.'s land holdings and estate became a major point of contention within the family after his death in 1844. This dispute, which continued for over forty years, was devastating to the Chews'family relationships and fortune, and is a central focus of the collection. The collection is divided into twenty-nine series, with over half of these dedicated to individual family members or family groups. Other series document the family's land holdings, Cliveden, their home in Germantown; the family's genealogical research; and their substantial map collection. The materials range in date from the seventeenth through the twentieth century, but the richest documentation is on nineteenth century life in the mid-Atlantic region. The collection contains business and financial records, cartographic material, correspondence, ephemera, legal documents, personal papers, and other materials created and collected by the Chews during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Timothy Horsfield Papers, 1684, 1733-1771
Title:
Timothy Horsfield Papers 1684, 1733-1771
An early settler and prominent citizen in the Moravian heartland near Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Timothy Horsfield was named justice of the peace when Northampton County was formed out of Bucks in 1752, and was one of those given responsibility for the defence of the local white and Christian Indian populations during the French and Indian War. The Horsfield Papers offer a window onto the tumultuous history of northeastern Pennsylvania during the 1750s and 1760s. Comprised largely of correspondence and related documents between Horsfield, William Parsons, and provincial and military authorities, the collection includes important information on the Indian assaults on the region in 1756 and 1757 and the military and diplomatic response.
