John Morgan (1735-1789) was a founder of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and one of the leading physicians in the American colonies at the outset of the Revolutionary War. In 1775 he was chosen as Director General of the American army's medical department. Morgan's management abilities and personal inclinations as well as charges of malfeasance by Dr. William Shippen, a member of the medical department, caused his removal in January, 1777. Morgan was vindicated by Congress in 1779, whereupon he launched an attack on Dr. Shippen for alleged misdeeds. Shippen was acquitted of the charges in 1780.
