"These were written at periods when Mr. Tarkington and Susanah [his wife] were in Indianapolis and they wanted to have news from Kennebunkport, Maine. We had known him very shortly after we moved to Kennebunkport in about 1917, after the war. He was known as 'the gentleman from Indiana' and was a well known author at the time the first letter in this collection was written. . . . Mr. Tarkington had rented a house in Kennebunkport for many years but decided that he would like to design his own plans for a house. When he built his new house and was collecting pictures, as he always did, he asked me to paint a portrait of Susanah and to do two panels for the dining room." --Mildred G. Burrage, 28 September 1979 [from the collection]
American novelist and dramatist.
American Novelist.
Booth Tarkington (1869–1946), native of Indianapolis and student at Purdue and Princeton universities (Princeton Class of 1893), was perhaps Indiana's most famous author, both as a playwright and as novelist. His best-known works were written in the first decades of the twentieth century: The Gentleman from Indiana (1899), Penrod (1910), Seventeen (1917), The Magnificent Ambersons (1918), and Alice Adams (1921). The last two won Pulitzer Prizes. In his work he showed an appreciation of the development of his native city, and an amiable understanding of the real and imagined problems of young people. He was an early member of The Dramatic Club, founded in 1889, and often wrote plays and directed and acted in its productions.
Indianapolis novelist and playwright. Tarkington was an early member of the Dramatic Club, and an art collector. During his later years he spent about half the year at his home in Kennebunkport, Me.
Tarkington was an Indianapolis, Ind. novelist and playwright. Later in his life Tarkington spent half the year in Indianapolis and the other half in Kennebunkport, Me. Miss Chapin seems to have been the secretary of Henry G. Leach, editor of the FORUM magazine.
Booth Tarkington was a popular, successful, and productive American writer. His best work is characterized by style, wit, and vivid social realism, and is generally well-crafted and entertaining. He wrote novels, plays, short stories, and essays, and was awarded two of the first four Pulitzer Prizes for novels.
Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, dramatist from Indiana, best known for THE GENTLEMAN FROM INDIANA, THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, and such books about adolescents as PENROD and SEVENTEEN.

In 1902 Tarkington married and was elected to a seat in the Indiana House of Representatives, which he was forced to give.
Up due to illness in 1903. By the 1920s Tarkington was living in the suburbs of Indianapolis, Indiana, and wintering in Kennebunkport, Maine which served as inspiration for many more of his works.

Paine's biography of Mark Twain, and especially James Whitcomb Riley. He gives opinions on the American-Soviet confrontation and encourages the reading of Tolstoy. In addition there are letters of recommendation for Charles Fisk Dalton and a Mr. Brown; social notes; letters of thanks and regret, reminiscences including an 1872 family trip to California, comments on his poor health, nervous condition and vision problems; and personal letters to James Whitcomb Riley from Tarkington and other family members giving personal news including accounts of ill health and Maine vacations, and a solicitation of funds for the Indianapolis Orphans Asylum. Title:
Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne papers, 1838-1983.
Papers of an internationally acclaimed theatrical couple whose careers spanned more than half a century and who starred in more than 60 theater and television productions from 1915 to 1980. The Lunts' personal correspondence provides a virtual "who's who" in the arts and entertainment industry in the first half of the 20th century. Letters abound from such prominent literary figures as Enid Bagnold, S. N. Behrman, John Mason Brown, Noel Coward, Edna Ferber, Terence Rattigan, Robert Sherwood, Booth Tarkington, Thornton Wilder, and Alexander Woollcott. Theater personalities such as Maxwell Anderson, Cecil Beaton, Hugh Beaumont, Russel Crouse, John Gielgud, Helen Hayes, Vivien Leigh, Howard Lindsay, Cathleen Nesbitt, Laurence Olivier, and John Wilson are represented as well. Other well-known figures are represented in smaller amounts. Although the Lunts starred in separate productions until the early 1920's, they achieved their greatest fame after 1924 when they appeared together in "The Guardsman." The majority of the production information in the collection dates from that time until the Lunts' last Broadway appearance in 1958, and includes newspaper and magazine clippings of reviews, advertisements, and related publicity, as well as playbills and programs. There is similar material from the 1919 production of "Clarence," which launched Lunt to stardom. The collection includes scripts from the following productions: "Beverly's Balance" (1915), "Iphigenia in Aulis" (1915), "Clarence" (1919), "Banco" (1922), "Outward Bound" (1924), "The Guardsman" (1924), "The Taming of the Shrew" (1935), "Idiot's Delight" (1936), "The Pirate" (1942), "O Mistress Mine" (1946), "I Know My Love" (1949), and "Anastasia" (TV - 1967). Tape-recorded material includes "The White Cliffs," a 1941 radio production; a performance of "The Guardsman"; and reminiscences of the actress Ellen Terry by Sybil Thorndike. There are video cassettes from the 1980 television documentary "The Lunts: A Life in the Theatre" and the 1981 "Bunny Raasch Special." Also present is a film of the 1963 television production "The Old Lady Shows Her Medals." Extensive production and personal photographs are included in the collection as well as home movies.

Fortean Society. Papers of the Fortean Society [manuscript], 1927-1952.
Title:
Papers of the Fortean Society [manuscript], 1927-1952.
Collection divided into three sections: Emma Goldman group, Fortean group, and Nietzsche group. The Emma Goldman group includes letters about Goldman including contributions by Theodore Dreiser, Eugene O'Neill, and Havelock Ellis to a fund to help her finance her memoirs. The Fortean group letters are primarily concerned with society business, particularly problems with Tiffany Thayer and his prohibiting access to Charles Fort's notes and papers. The purpose and continued existence of the society is discussed. In a letter to Arthur Leonard Ross, dated January 26, 1938, and not connected with the affairs of Fort or the Fortean Society, Edgar Lee Masters expresses surprise that he has been translated into Hebrew although Spoon River has been translated into Japanese. The Nietzsche group includes correspondence about Nietzsche including discussions of copyright problems with Bennett Cerf. Also included is a printed page from "The Nation" of a book review by Alfred Werner of Nietzche's "My sister and I" which discusses the probability it is a forgery. Correspondents include Harry Elmer Barnes; Theodore Dreiser; Havelock Ellis; Charles Fort; Rockwell Kent; Edgar Lee Masters; H. L. Mencken; Eugene O'Neill; John Cowper Powys; Arthur Leonard Ross; Walter Starret; Booth Tarkington; W. S. Van Valkenburg; Alexander Woollcott; Tiffany Thayer and Burton Rascoe.

Title:
[Letter], 1915 June 7 : Kennebunkport, Me. [to] Mr. Lorin L. Raker, New York / Booth Tarkington.
Letter written concerning Mr. Raker's desire to make "Penrod" into a vaudeville sketch or a play including the need for finding a playwright and a manager. Mr. Tarkington says that he could not personally do it as the material does not take a theatrical form in his mind nor does he have the time. He gives Mr. Raker permission to proceed including trying out a sketch in vaudeville for a couple of weeks without royalties to see if it works. If successful then arrangements could be made to continue or to have a play written based on the strength of the vaudeville engagement.
