Hoosier journalist, humorist, and playwright best known for his Chicago Record column, "Stories of the streets and of the town," which was illustrated by John T. McCutcheon; for his syndicated "Fables in slang;" and for his Broadway plays including The college widow and The county chairman.

George Ade was born in Kentland, Indiana. He graduated from Purdue University in 1887. After graduation he worked in Chicago as a reporter and columnist, and later became a playwright. He built a house near Brook, Indiana in Newton County called Hazelden Farm. Ade died on 16 May 1944 and is buried in Fairlawn Cemetery in Kentland.

American humorist George Ade came from a rural Indiana background. Educated at Purdue, he held various newspaper jobs before finding success as a journalist in Chicago. His glib, accessible, witty style and gift for language made even the most mundane story popular. He went on to write books, short stories, plays, and librettos, always in a humorous vein to great popular success. He had a lasting influence on American humorists such as Ring Lardner, Don Marquis, Damon Runyon, and James Thurber, among others.
