John Kendrick Bangs was a popular American humorist. Born in New York and educated at Columbia, he began writing for periodicals and became editor for the magazine, Life. A gifted and prolific writer, Bangs worked for various humor magazines, notably Harper's, and his enormous output of sketches, poetry, plays, fiction, and children's stories are distinguished by urbanity, satire, wit, and gentle irony. His work as writer and editor influenced a generation of American humorists, and, in later years, he became a popular and sought-after humor lecturer in America.
