Charles Willson Peale was an artist and naturalist. Peale's Museum (also called the Philadelphia Museum) was the first to be scientifically organized and open to the American public on a regular basis. In 1799 and 1800, Peale introduced lectures into the museum's program.

Peale studied in London with Benjamin West. Painted George Washington's portrait. Established Peale's Museum in 1786. Influential in the founding of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Father of Raphaelle, Franklin, Rubens, Rembrandt and Titian Ramsay Peale. Brother of James Peale.

On June 18, 1801, Charles Willson Peale and Rembrandt Peale boarded the sloop Priscilla in New York City, bound up the Hudson River for Newburg. Their destination was the Orange County farm of John Masten where the bones of a mastodon were being exhumed -- the mastodon that the Peales purchased and installed as the most popular attraction in their Philadelphia Museum.

During the voyage to Masten's farm, Peale was overwhelmed by the scenery and began sketching furiously. In a letter to Andrew Ellicott, July 12, 1801, he wrote:
