Wade Hampton was born in Charleston, S.C. on March 28, 1818 to a family that owned plantations in South Carolina and Mississippi. He became a general for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, and was later elected governor of South Carolina and then senator. He died on April 11, 1902 in Columbia, S.C.
