Variant namesA native of Charleston, S.C., James Conner was an attorney and a Confederate general. He served as U.S. District Attorney and S.C. Attorney General (1876), and became a member of the Confederate military court of the 2nd Corps in 1863. He was the son of Henry Workman Conner (1797-1861) and Julia Ann M. Courtney (1804-1881). He married Sallie Enders of Richmond, Va.

William R. Taber, Jr., editor of the Mercury (a newspaper), was killed on 29 Sept. 1856 by Edward Magrath in a duel over some articles published in the Mercury which were critical of his brother, Judge A.G. Magrath.
