Columbia University. Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Railroads - letters on state aid and documents, [ca. 1840]-1930.
Title:
Railroads - letters on state aid and documents, [ca. 1840]-1930.
This collection consists of 37 letters written in reply to a questionnaire sent out by the Philadelphia attorneys, Campbell, Reall, Foster, Bright, and Dallas, in regard to the case of SHARPLESS ET AL. VS. THE MAYOR, ALDERMEN, AND CITIZENS OF PHILADELPHIA IN 1853. These letters of reply contain information for 17 states, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Arkansas, Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Maine, and Louisiana. The letters give brief but full accounts of the history, legislation, and policy of aid to railroads by local governments in these states up to 1853, the year in which all of the letters are dated. The letters were written by state officials and functionaries and are all in script of the clarity of mid-19th century legal hands. Also, articles of incorporation for the West Virginia railroads Clarksburg, Weston and Glenville Railroad and Transportation Company, Weston and Buckhannon Railroad Company, Weston and Elk River Railroad Company, Weston and West Fork Railroad Company, and Buckhannon River Railroad Company; railroad stock certificates; and scrapbooks containing news clippings relating to the Great Erie Railway War, 1868, and sample railroad tickets for the New York Central Railroad.

Columbia University. Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library papyrus collection, 300 B.C.-500 A.D.
Title:
Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library papyrus collection, 300 B.C.-500 A.D.
The Columbia collection includes ca. 2150 papyri and over 3600 ostraca in a variety of languages including Greek, Latin, Egyptian (Demotic, Coptic and Hieratic) and Arabic. Among the papyri, there are also a few texts on parchment and paper. The papyri range in date from the 3rd century BCE to the 7th century CE and come from different parts of Egypt. About 300 have been published in the volumes of Columbia Papyri (P.Col., volumes I-XI) and a few more were published elsewhere. The papyri preserve a variety of texts, from ancient fragments of important literary works (Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Euripides' Orestes, Plato's Phaedrus) written much earlier than the medieval manuscripts upon which modern editions are usually based, to mundane documents such as private letters, tax receipts, petitions and contracts, which illustrate the economic activities, personal relationships, legal conflicts and contractual arrangements of people in Greco-Roman Egypt over a period of about 1000 years. Ostraca are pottery fragments and flakes of limestone with writing in ink. Some contain Greek, but the majority is Coptic, and they range in date from the sixth to the seventh century CE. They include about one hundred school exercises (especially abecedaries), private letters, religious texts, receipts, etc. With few exceptions, the ostraca come from monasteries in Upper Egypt around Luxor.

School of the Arts records, 1895-1997.
The School of the Arts Records consists of administrative files from several offices within the School. The files span from the creation of the Department of Fine Arts through the mid-1990s and document the day to day maintenance of the School as well as the large scale vision held by faculty and administration. General administrative files such as financial records, meeting minutes, proposals, reports, and correspondence comprise the bulk of the collection. Correspondence from Dean Davidson Taylor and Associate Dean Grafton Nunes is well represented. Records from the Translation Center tend to focus on individual issues, but there are also files concerning fundraising, publicity, and the many awards granted on a yearly basis.
