Title:
Eduardo Hernández-Chávez and Ysaura Bernal-Enríquez papers, 1980-2006.
The Eduardo Hernández-Chávez and Ysaura Bernal-Enríquez Papers contain clippings, correspondence, subject files, photographic materials, and other materials generated or collected by Hernández-Chávez and Bernal-Enríquez in the course of their community work. Of particular interest are the files about César Chávez, including those that document the activities of the Recuerda A César Chávez Committee, which was formed in 1983 after the passing of César Chávez. The Committee sought to educate the media and the people of Albuquerque, New Mexico about Chávez' contributions. Their efforts included renaming a street and naming a new community center in Albuquerque in honor of Chávez. In addition, the group worked to erect a statue in Albuquerque ("Llaves for Chávez") in memorial and lobbied for a César Chávez holiday in the State. This committee work took place through the 1980s, 90s, and early 2000s. The committee remains in existence today. Eduardo Hernández-Chávez and Ysaura Bernal-Enríquez founded New Mexicans Against Proposition 187 to combat the "ripple effect" of anti-immigrant and English-Only legislation coming to New Mexico from California, after the passage of Proposition 187 in California (1995). The related papers document their efforts, including a major rally held on Feb 5, 1996, and a publication written by Hernández-Chávez and Bernal-Enríquez titled "Stop Prop 187: A Resource Manual for Organizers." This resource manual was requested by organizers for use in many other states. Other files document community struggles Hernández-Chávez and Bernal-Enríquez worked with including the New Mexico Land Grant Forum, protests against two radio hosts in El Cenizo, Texas, the No on NAFTA organizing efforts, the Movimiento para la Liberación Nacional Mexicana (MLNM), Albuquerque Border City Project (ABC), Alliance for Immigrant Rights, and the Córdova sisters lawsuit against the Vaughn Municipal School District.

Title:
Oral history interview with Frances Guajardo Peña, 1996 [videorecording].
Frances Guajardo Peña explains the purpose of the Su Voz Es Su Voto rally and traces its origins to her work with the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project. She talks about the work of the Committee to Educate on Voting Rights and Procedures and details the makeup of the Inner City Advocates (InCA), a group founded by her husband, Albert Peña (Jr.). She describes the efforts of her father, José Manuel Guajardo, as a lawyer in San Antonio and in encouraging activism in the family. She speaks of her family background and homelife and highlights the time she heard Cesar Chavez speak during a Chicano movement rally. She recounts her political activities as a student and defines her involvement with the Mexican American Unity Council (MAUC). She provides details about her first husband's family business, Green's Jewelers in Corpus Christi, and reveals the origin of its non-Hispanic business name. She recalls the race discrimination she saw in Corpus Christi in contrast to her life in San Antonio and discusses her part in creating a trade school in San Antonio under Project Learn to Build in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Labor. She relates the origins of the Fiestas Patrias (Mexico's Independence Day celebrations) at Mission County Park in San Antonio and attributes the success of the Fiestas Patrias celebrations to the efforts of the Ladies LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) 648. She refers to the leadership of Joyce Peters as the Bexar County Democratic Party chair and berates Henry Cisneros' failure to improve the Alazán Apache apartments in San Antonio's public housing as mayor or while head of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). She laments the weakening of LULAC when José Velez of Las Vegas, Nevada served as its president (1990-1994). She mentions Mexican American politician Victor Morales and San Antonio mayoral candidate Kay (H.) Turner. The interview was conducted at a Su Voz Es Su Voto rally.

Guide to Sam Reiss 1975 Retrospective Exhibit, 1948-1975
Title:
Guide to Sam Reiss 1975 Retrospective Exhibit, 1948-1975
Samuel Reiss was among the most prominent and prolific photographers of the labor movement in New York City from the late 1940s until his death in 1975. During the three decades that Reiss earned a living with his camera, he documented a changing work force in a changing city, building a reputation as "Labor's photographer." Week by week, throughout his career, Reiss made photographs that documented New York's labor movement during its most active, influential, and progressive years. The materials in the collection document and include images from a 1975 retrospective exhibit of Reiss' work. These include press releases, promotional materials, and correspondence relating to the exhibit, 140 numbered slides that comprised the slideshow displayed as part of the exhibit, 138 of the 140 black and white captioned prints (mostly 8 x 10) on 11" x 14" cardboard mounts that were photographed to create the matching slides, and a small number of additional mounted prints that were not included in the slideshow.

William W. Finlator Papers
Title:
William W. Finlator Papers
Papers of a North Carolina Baptist minister concerned with civil rights, civil liberties, ecumenism, and the Vietnam War, mainly consisting of correspondence, writings, and an alphabetical subject file. Correspondence, which is chiefly outgoing, forms two-thirds of the collection and dates primarily from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s. Much of it is routine pastoral mail, but there are letters which touch on Finlator's social and political activism. Writings include articles, addresses, book reviews, invocations, letters to editors, broadcast commentaries, a few sermons, and related correspondence and clippings. These deal with ecumenism, labor relations, prison reform, prayer in public schools, prohibition, and Billy Graham. Most noteworthy among the subject files which are made up of additional correspondence, clippings, reports, writings, and printed matter, are those pertaining to the Baptist State Convention, the North Carolina Civil Liberties Union, the North Carolina Council of Churches, and North Carolina Advisory Committee to the U. S. Commission on Civil Rights, prisoners, and the Raleigh Committee of Clergymen Concerned with Vietnam.

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Title:
Papers of Joan London, 1899-1975 (bulk 1937-1970).
The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, and ephemera pertaining to the life and work of Joan London. Since much of London's work focused on her father, many items in the collection specifically relate to the life and writings of Jack London. The collection contains correspondence between Joan and individuals who knew, or were interested in, her father, the notes and drafts used by London in writing her father's biography, and several copies of letters written by Jack London himself. Joan was also interested in the life of her paternal grandfather, William Henry Chaney, and the collection contains both manuscripts and notes relating to him. Joan London's unpublished work, Visiting rights only, is one of several manuscripts in the collection, and it specifically addresses Joan's feelings towards her father and her thoughts on her childhood within a single-parent family.

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Region I, records 1942-1986 1945-1977
The Records of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Region I document the daily work of the NAACP in the Western United States from 1942-1986 (bulk 1945-1977). Regular additions to the collection are expected. Although the Region initially consisted of four states and grew to include nine, the bulk of the collection documents the work of the Region I Office in California, particularly in regard to statewide legislation. One of the most comprehensive record series is that of Branch Files, which contains documentation of the work of local (usually citywide) branches throughout the Region. The work of Regional Directors, Noah W. Griffin, Franklin Williams, Tarea Hall Pittman, Leonard H. Carter, and Virna M. Canson, is especially well represented within the collection.

This collection comprises fliers, reports, newsletters, photographs, bumper stickers, and ephemera compiled for use at the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee (UFWOC) Information Fair held in San Fernando, California in 1969. The collection is particularly strong in documenting the United Farm Workers (UFW) trade union and its formation; UFW-organized boycotts and strikes, including the Delano Grape Strike from 1965 to 1966; and the working and living conditions of migrant agricultural laborers. Other files document the economic and legal aspects of farm labor, ties between churches and the farm labor movement, and the effect of pesticides on farm laborers. Title:
Oral history interview with Nephtalí De León, 1999 [videorecording].
Nephtalí De León expresses his views on Chicano culture and the underlying philosophy of his art and writing, noting its basis in the work of José Vasconcelos. He defines 'Aztlán' and explains the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA). He details his family background, his travels as a young man, and his own experiences with race discrimination. He connects pollution of the Rio Grande to the death of his own daughter and describes political turmoil of the Chicano movement in Texas. He highlights several incidents involving protest marches, strikes, and related arrests. He talks at length about his letter to President Richard Nixon, related correspondence with Bella Abzug and other public figures, and subsequent surveillance conducted by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Secret Service. Mr. De León recalls his run for election to the city council in Lubbock as the Raza Unida Party candidate and refers to the Mexican American Conference held in El Paso in 1967 to address racial inequity and oppression. He refers to the death of Heriberto Terán (Terán/Naret) in Boulder, Colorado, and the murder of Orlando Letelier, Chilean ambassador to the United Nations. He mentions such prominent Hispanics as Rodolpho 'Corky' Gonzales, Cesar Chavez, Antonio Orendain, Ernesto 'Che' Guevara, Ruben Salazar, and Ricardo Mora.

Steiner, Stan. Papers, ca. 1961-1987.
Title:
Papers, ca. 1961-1987.
The Steiner Papers include the personal and professional papers of Stan Steiner covering the time period from 1940 - 1987 and occupy 69 linear feet. They document the personal and intellectual activities of a writer, a social historian, a moralist, a folklorist, an anecdotalist, and a myth-teller. His writingsrsome twenty books and countless articlesdare a continuing search for vanishing cultures and the histories of forgotten people, specifically of the American West. To that end, Steiner wrote about Native Americans, the Chinese who helped build the West, Mexican Americans, New Mexico and New Mexicans, ranchers, farmers, cowboys, and Islanders. His goal was to disabuse his readers of stereotypes and misinformed images of the West by telling the complicated, nuanced, and elemental stories of these people in their own words, what Steiner called "testimonials." His manuscripts provide multiple draft copies of many of these testimonies as well as typed manuscripts and photostats of typed drafts and published works by Steiner.

Martínez, Jaime, 1946-. Oral history interview with Jaime Martínez, 1997 [videorecording].
Title:
Oral history interview with Jaime Martínez, 1997 [videorecording].
Jaime Martínez begins with his family's background and talks about an uncle, Bernabe Martínez, an early labor organizer of Comite Numero Cinco (Committee Number Five) who was killed by a Bexar county sheriff. He recalls joining his first organization, the Sociedad Mutualista Mexicana with his grandfather and his grandmother's appreciation for Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He reveals his musical background as a trumpet player in a number of bands, such as the Sunglows and the Deltones, touring the U.S. and Canada, playing for Paul Anka, and meeting legendary drummer Gene Krupa. He refers to the health problems he began experiencing because of his musician's lifestyle which led to his decision to settle down. He gives his views on the Vietnam War and explains his wanting to enlist in the military and later marching in San Antonio against the war in 1968. He discusses the International Union of Electrical Workers (IUE, now the IUE-AFL-CIO) Local 780 strike against the Friedrich Refrigeration Company (now the Friedrich Air Conditioning Company) in 1964 and the arrest of Leonora Silva. He talks about getting his first job with Friedrich in 1966 and his growing leadership role in the IUE. He elaborates upon the IUE organization levels and provides details of his own progression to union leadership. He describes his first trip to IUE headquarters in Washington, D.C., and his first union-organizing assignment in 1972 in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He explains the term Bowl Ware [sic, Boulwarism] as a form of union busting, citing the 1960 IUE strike against the Hendersonville General Electric Company plant. He recalls representing a member of the Hatfield family in a labor dispute and recounts an incident of harrassment from a Hendersonville deputy. He shares his experience in assisting Crystal Lee Sutton with the J. P. Stevens boycott [in Roanoke Rapids, N.C.] for the Textile Workers Union of America. He recounts his experience with race discrimination while organizing a union drive at the Westinghouse Electric Corporation plant in Louisville, Georgia. Mr. Martínez gives his reasons for his return to San Antonio in 1977 and the continuing of his union organizing efforts at the Temple Manufacturing plant. He expresses his enthusiasm about his work with Coordinadora, an organization for immigrant rights, pointing out the organization's stance against the brutality of police and border patrol officers, and describes the events of the Coordinadora '96 march in Austin and his subsequent health problems. He discusses his concerns over the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and his involvement in the National Labor Council of Latin American Advancement (LCLAA). He touches on the labor movement in Mexico and the presidency of Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano, and details an incident as an election observer for the Alianza Cívica in Mexico. He shares details of his association with César Chávez and Henry B. Gonzales, particularly when he was up for election to the IUE executive board. He mentions such prominent civil rights activists and supporters as Martin Luther King, Jr., Lucille Banta, Ralph Abernathy, and Edward M. Kennedy.

Gutiérrez, Jesús 1927-. Oral history interview with Jesús Gutiérrez, 1996 [videorecording].
Title:
Oral history interview with Jesús Gutiérrez, 1996 [videorecording].
Jesús Gutiérrez begins with his early life and family background in Mexico and clarifies his decision to pursue radio broadcasting and journalism over that of a Carmelite priest. He reveals he studied in Mexico City under famed broadcaster Bachiller Galvez (Bachiller Álvaro Gálvez y Fuentes) and provides details of his immigration to the United States as a former radio announcer in northern Mexico who was tapped for a job by radio station KCOR in San Antonio, Texas. He talks about his dual career in broadcasting/journalism and as manager for El Rancho restaurants in San Antonio and how he came to own and operate his own restaurants there. He elaborates on his reasons for shedding his 'Mario del Valle' personna to concentrate on journalism and describes a particular incident of race discrimination he experienced while passing through New Braunfels. He speaks of his friendship with Marcos Rodríguez in Dallas and explains his decision to leave his restaurants to his family in order to seek new opportunities in Dallas. He refers to his work in Dallas's El Fenix restaurant, run by Rodríguez' cousin Alfredo Martínez, and afterwards at the El Chico restaurant before starting his Spanish language newspaper, 'El Sol de Tejas.' He chronicles the 20 years he devoted to his newspaper, from his earliest advertisers and clients to the finances of his newspaper, including the move of his operations to Oak Cliff in 1974. He comments on his star reporter, Guadalupe "Gil" Duarte, and Duarte's 's hardhitting articles on police brutality against Mexican Americans, including the killing of Santos Rodríguez and the protest demonstrations that ensued. He reveals details of Duarte's alleged beating and murder after an exposé on African Americans pimping Mexican American and Anglo prostitutes in East Dallas. He discusses expanding 'El Sol' into the Austin and San Antonio markets, noting the assistance of Rubén Sandoval for his success in San Antonio. He describes the dirty tactics used by former employees who started competitive newspapers to push their circulation, and he boasts about putting them out of business before he finally sold 'El Sol.' He shares the startup of his own news agency with Marcos Nelson Suárez, the latter in Corpus Christi, and points to Reuters news service (Reuters Ltd.) as his best source for Spanish-language news. He relates his role and that of his wife, Sara Suárez Gutiérrez, in helping other Spanish language newspapers in other Texas markets and laments the 'yellow journalism' of TeleNoticias [sic, Telenoticias, now affiliated with Telemundo Group, Inc.] where he worked as editor at the time of the interview. He hints at his membership on several Dallas area boards, including that of Parkland Hospital to which he was appointed by Dallas County District Attorney Henry Wade. Gutiérrez provides particulars of the sale of 'El Sol' to Burt [sic, Burk] Murchison due to the interest of the Mexican Department of Tourism and comments on Dallas city councilmembers Anita N. Martínez, Ricardo Medrano, and Jim Burger. He recalls working with Cesar Chávez during a grape boycott, mentions his television stint on WFAA-TV's 'Que Pasa,' and tells of his other businesses ventures.

Guide to the Sam Reiss Photographs, circa 1930-1975
Title:
Guide to the Sam Reiss Photographs, circa 1930-1975
Samuel Reiss was among the most prominent and prolific photographers of the labor movement in New York City from the late 1940s until his death in 1975. During the three decades that Reiss earned a living with his camera, he documented a changing work force in a changing city, building a reputation as "Labor's photographer." Week by week, throughout his career, Reiss made photographs that document New York's labor movement during its most active, influential, and progressive years. The Sam Reiss Photographs Collection - Part II: Photographic Prints is comprised of approximately 8,400 overwhelmingly black and white 8"x 10" photographic prints from ca. the 1930s to 1975, although the bulk were shot between the 1950s and 1970s. Most of these images document the activities and leadership of many of the major labor unions in New York City and the metropolitan area during this period, including those representing workers in the garment, retail, communications, transportation and entertainment industries, and teachers. Many of these images are portraits and group photographs. A small but rich selection of images shows people engaged in various kinds of work, and the collection also includes small numbers of images of sports and recreation, school children, building construction, apartment housing, voter registration drives, and picnics.

Oral history interview with Vicente Ximenes, 2004
Title:
Oral history interview with Vicente Ximenes, 2004
Vicente Ximenes begins with his father's role in Floresville and South Texas politics in the 1930s and his work in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He shares being a part of a Mexican American student co-op in Austin to help with college expenses at the University of Texas and recalls the group's lively debates on race discrimination. He reveals details of his military service at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico and in the Mediterranean theater during World War II and gives details about his family and his affiliation with the University of New Mexico. He talks about his work with the American G.I. Forum and his friendship with Dr. Hector García in the 1950s and 1960s and points out the involvement of New Mexico Senator Joseph Montoya, California Senator Edward Roybal, and (James) Carlos McCormick in the Viva Kennedy Clubs. He mentions the presence of Robert F. Kennedy at the American G.I. Forum Convention in Chicago in 1960, and discusses the job he took with the Agency for International Development as a program officer in Quito, Ecuador. He highlights his work for President Lyndon B. Johnson as director of the Viva Johnson Clubs (funded by the Democratic National Committee) for the 1964 presidential election. He recounts his encounter with Chicago mayor Richard Daley's cronies during his effort to organize Viva Johnson Clubs across the U.S. and describes the frenzied efforts to distribute a campaign newspaper, 'El Nuevo Piñon,' nationwide. He speaks of the political efforts of celebrities such as Ricardo Montalbán and of drafting Mexico's Cantinflas for a political rally. He alludes to Sargent Shriver's role in the War on Poverty after Johnson's reelection as an obstacle to further Mexican American involvement in national politics, apart from the creation of the Cabinet Committee on Opportunity for the Spanish-Speaking (a.k.a. Mexican American Affairs). He tells of his efforts to organize the White House Conference slated for El Paso, Texas to address Mexican American issues and spells out his reasons for resigning from his position under Sargent Shriver to take a post in Panama. He relates the circumstances that brought him back to Washington, D.C. as Commissioner of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and discloses his pivotal conversation with New Mexico Senator Clint Anderson. He explains the real power was not through his role as EEOC commissioner but rather his post as chairman of the Cabinet Committee, along with the help of committee member John Gardner, the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare. Ximenes takes credit for the creation and initiation of Affirmative Action programs, and attributes the assistance of John Macy, head of the U.S. Civil Service Commission, for its success. He notes flying on Air Force One and provides logistical details of the White House Conferences planned for San Antonio, Albuquerque, and El Paso, the last of which included Mexico's president Gustavo Díaz Ordaz to orchestrate the cessioning of the Rio Grande's El Chamizal. He laments his failure to win over George Sánchez and Cesar Chávez and exposes the complexity of the politics involved. He covers the involvement and activities of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA), the Political Association of Spanish-speaking Organizations (PASSO), and the Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO) during the conference. He disputes the alleged walkout during the conference in El Paso and chronicles the conference events from the introduction of Texas governor John Connally to the reception of then vice president Humbert H. Humphrey. He cites bilingual education and immigration as sources of political contention between Mexican Americans and African Americans and talks about the role of Louis Martin, an African American journalist and colleague of Cuban origin, in the Viva Johnson Clubs. He gives his opinions on the Democratic Party, comments on Mexican American politicos Henry B. Gonzales, Albert Peña, and New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, and expresses his views on issues facing Mexican Americans.

Lewis, Jon. Photographs and film of Cesar Chavez and agricultural labor activities in California.
Title:
Photographs and film of Cesar Chavez and agricultural labor activities in California. 1966-2004.
Photographs and a digital transfer of a documentary film created by Jon Lewis that document the activities of Cesar Chavez, the National Farm Workers Association, and United Farm Workers Organizing Committee in California, 1966-1971. The digital transfer of the film and the color ink jet photographic print were created by Lewis, 2004. Images include migrant agricultural laborers picketing a field of table grape growers in Delano, California, January 1966, including informal portraits of men identified as Campos and Zapata. Images of a peregrinación (pilgrimage) from Delano to Sacramento, March-April 1966, including informal portraits of Chavez and views of marchers and flag bearers holding flags for the National Farm Workers Association and a banner that depicts the Our Lady of Guadalupe. A color ink jet photographic print depicts an image of Chavez during the march. An image depicts a meeting of individuals employed by the Di Giorgio Fruit Corporation immediately prior to a vote whether to join the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee, August 1966. Other incidental images during 1966 include an informal portrait of labor leader Dolores Huerta; a man picketing the Di Giorgio Fruit Corporation, a woman during a summertime union rally; a boy sitting on grape crates of the El Rancho Farms and an elderly woman walking in a field during the grape harvest in the late summer; and an informal portrait of Chavez in the autumn. Images related to a fast of resistance by Chavez in March 1968, include an informal portrait of him and individuals at a candlelight vigil held in his honor. Another image shows Chavez with Robert F. Kennedy during a demonstration, probably held in conjunction with a committee hearing held by the California State Senate at the end of his fast. The documentary film entitled "Nosotros Venceremos" (We shall overcome) with the opening title of "La huelga de la una en Delano" ("The strike of the grape in Delano) was produced by Lewis in 1971 and was used as a promotional tool by the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee. The videodisc documents the events of 1966 using photographic imagery that depicts of picket lines, individual farm workers, the march from Delano to Sacramento, the fast of Chavez, and the announcement of a contract between the union and growers with a soundtrack of hymns and speeches in Spanish recorded by Eliezer Lozada Risco.
