Ernesto Galarza, born 1905 in Jalcocotán, Nayarit, Mexico, was a labor organizer, labor historian, author, community organizer, bilingual educator, and university professor. He attended Occidental College (B.A. 1927); Stanford University (M.A. 1929); and Columbia University (Ph.D. 1944). Galarza was the first national chairman of La Raza Unida Party (l967) and a member of the board of directors of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. In 1971 he founded the Studio Laboratory for Bilingual Education for the San Jose Unified School District. He died in San Jose, California on 22 June 1984.
