<p>William Randolph Hearst Sr. (April 29, 1863 – August 14, 1951) was an American businessman, newspaper publisher, and politician known for developing the nation's largest newspaper chain and media company, Hearst Communications. His flamboyant methods of yellow journalism influenced the nation's popular media by emphasizing sensationalism and human interest stories. Hearst entered the publishing business in 1887 with Mitchell Trubitt after being given control of The San Francisco Examiner by his wealthy father, Senator George Hearst.</p>
<p>Moving to New York City, Hearst acquired the New York Journal and fought a bitter circulation war with Joseph Pulitzer's New York World. Hearst sold papers by printing giant headlines over lurid stories featuring crime, corruption, sex, and innuendo. Acquiring more newspapers, Hearst created a chain that numbered nearly 30 papers in major American cities at its peak. He later expanded to magazines, creating the largest newspaper and magazine business in the world. Hearst controlled the editorial positions and coverage of political news in all his papers and magazines, and thereby often published his personal views. He sensationalized Spanish atrocities in Cuba while calling for war in 1898 against Spain. Historians, however, reject his subsequent claims to have started the war with Spain as overly extravagant.</p>
<p>He was twice elected as a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives. He ran unsuccessfully for President of the United States in 1904, Mayor of New York City in 1905 and 1909, and for Governor of New York in 1906. During his political career, he espoused views generally associated with the left wing of the Progressive Movement, claiming to speak on behalf of the working class.</p>
<p>After 1918 and the end of World War I, Hearst gradually began adopting more conservative views and started promoting an isolationist foreign policy to avoid any more entanglement in what he regarded as corrupt European affairs. He was at once a militant nationalist, a fierce anti-communist after the Russian Revolution, and deeply suspicious of the League of Nations and of the British, French, Japanese, and Russians. He was a leading supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932–34, but then broke with FDR and became his most prominent enemy on the right. Hearst's empire reached a peak circulation of 20 million readers a day in the mid-1930s. He was a bad manager of finances and so deeply in debt during the Great Depression that most of his assets had to be liquidated in the late 1930s. Hearst managed to keep his newspapers and magazines.</p>
<p>His life story was the main inspiration for Charles Foster Kane, the lead character in Orson Welles's film Citizen Kane (1941). His Hearst Castle, constructed on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean near San Simeon, has been preserved as a State Historical Monument and is designated as a National Historic Landmark.</p>

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Julia Morgan Papers, 1835-1958 (bulk 1896-1945)
Title:
Julia Morgan Papers 1835-1958 (bulk 1896-1945)
This collection contains architectural drawings and plans, office records, photographs, correspondence, project files, student work, family correspondence, and personal papers from the estate of California architect Julia Morgan, who practiced in San Francisco during the first half of the twentieth century. The bulk of the collection extends from 1896, when Morgan left for Paris to study architecture at the Beaux-Arts, to 1945 when her practice began to wind down. A persistent misperception exists that she destroyed records from her fifty-year practice when she retired in 1951. In fact, she carefully preserved many original architectural drawings and other business records, which were given to California Polytechnic State University by her heirs. The National Board of the YWCA; Earl and Wright, Consulting Engineers; Mr. and Mrs. William Randolph Hearst, Jr.; and other donors who wish to remain anonymous have made significant additional donations to the collection, which are also included in this guide.

New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers, 1823-1999
Title:
New York Times Company records. Arthur Hays Sulzberger papers 1823-1999
Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings.

Watson, Thomas E. (Thomas Edward), 1856-1922. Thomas E. Watson papers, 1863-1996.
Title:
Thomas E. Watson papers, 1863-1996.
Chiefly business and professional papers of Thomas E. Watson, including correspondence, largely about politics and writings; legal and financial papers relating to his law practice and writings; drafts of his books and articles; printed versions of articles and pamphlets; diaries and commonplace books; scrapbooks and clippings about Watson and subjects of interest to him; writings by others, most of whom were associated with Watson's publications; family photographs; and miscellaneous other materials. There is good coverage of the Populist Party and of Georgia politics in general; scrapbooks, clippings, and speeches provide documentation for Watson's national political campaigns. Correspondence with Watson's book publishers and employees, along with book and article manuscripts, provide extensive coverage of his work as writer and editor. Watson was most influential through his publications, which included the People's Party Paper (1891-1898). His editorials espoused such Populist causes as antitrust legislation, railroad regulation, and monetary policies favorable to agrarian interests, including the coinage of silver. Materials also relate to Watson's initial support of the inclusion of African Americans in the agrarian movement, and his later shift to race baiting, support of black disfranchisement, and virulent anti-Jewish and anti-Catholic sentiment. Draft copies of Watson's books include a history of France (1899); biographies of Napoleon (1902), Jefferson (1903), and Andrew Jackson (1912); and a novel (1904), all of which were written from the Populist perspective. Correspondents include William Jennings Bryan, Marion Butler, William Randolph Hearst, James Ryder Randall, Theodore Roosevelt, and Upton Sinclair. Watson's private life is documented in a few personal letters and some diary entries. Also included is a long interview with Georgia Watson Craven about Tom Watson; the Watson family; and life in Thomson, Ga.

Ford, Henry, 1863-1947. General Personal records series, 1823-1984 (bulk 1920-1947)
Title:
General Personal records series, 1823-1984 (bulk 1920-1947)
The General Personal records series, Acc. 23, consists of eleven subseries. The Name Files subseries, 1886-1948 (2.8 cubic ft.), is comprised largely of correspondence, telegrams, publications, postcards and greeting cards sent to Henry Ford or his secretaries (mainly Frank Campsall or E. G. Liebold) in regards to topics of interest to Mr. Ford or as congratulatory messages for various birthdays or anniversaries. Most of this material is related to interests outside of the manufacture of automobiles, but there are some materials that cover that topic as well, such as Ford Motor Company correspondence and correspondence from Percival Perry and Gaston Plantiff. Also included are General folders which cover various topics of interest to Henry Ford during the 1900s and 1920s. Documents of note in this subseries include a few letters from George Washington Carver, a brief presented by Ford Motor Company of Canada to the Tarriff Inquiry Commission with production and employment figures for the Walkerville plant for the 1910-1920 period, monthly statistics from 1920 such as age, nationality, marriage status, pay rate and length of service for those entering and leaving the employ of Ford Motor Company, copies of the 1932 radio address of Henry Ford in support of Herbert Hoover, photos and itinerary for the 1941 visit of the Duke of Windsor, data on Central and South America relative to prospective business by Ford Motor Company and a paper from the 1926 meeting of Roadmen and Department heads of the Ford San Francisco branch that gives insight into the sales and advertising methods of the time period. This subseries is arranged alphabetically by correspondent or subject name. The Subject Files subseries, 1823-1944 (4.4 cubic ft.), contains clippings, photographs, cards, telegrams, publications and sheet music for subjects of interest to or relating to Henry Ford including personal notes, birthday and holiday greetings, a copy of the 1896 payroll log for the Edison Illuminating Company with an entry for Ford, and collected material on interests such as dancing, food and diet, and rubber. There are several documents and maps in the Georgia folders ranging in date from 1823 to 1880 that presumably document the area that would later become his Richmond Hill property in Georgia. Included with that material is an 1823 slave list from White Hall and correspondence of G. L. Appleton and R. J. Arnold. Other items of interest include 1942 lists of salaried and hourly employees with the company 20 or more years from plants such as Highland Park, the Rouge, the Lincoln plant, Willow Run and the Village Industries. This subseries is arranged alphabetically by subject term or by name of individual. The Ford Genealogy Files subseries, circa 1834-1947 (2 cubic ft. and 1 oversize box), and Bryant Genealogy Files subseries, 1886-1927 (1.2 cubic ft.), consist mainly of information compiled by genealogical researcher Gladys M. Salta about the lineage of the Ford and Bryant families. The Anti-Cigarette Literature subseries, 1912-1915 (0.4 cubic ft.), includes several copies of the four-volume series "The Case Against the Little White Slaver," correspondence regarding that publication and printed material about cigarettes. The remaining subseries offer insight into the interests and activities of Henry Ford and his place in society in the first half of the twentieth century. The Article Files subseries, 1870-1950 (0.8 cubic ft.) includes articles by or about Henry Ford and topics or persons of interest to him including children, agro-industry and world affairs. It is arranged alphabetically by article title. The Bound Financial Records subseries, 1914-1925 (0.4 cubic ft.) includes three ledgers of varied accounting information on such entities as the Ford Hawaiian Quintet and Yacht Sialia. The ledgers are not very complete nor do they provide an abundance of information. The Framed Documents subseries, 1928-1947 (0.4 cubic ft.), contains four items: a 1947 resolution by the Board of the Wayne County Road Commissioners to the family of Henry Ford, 1928 letters from France M. Leslie and Isabella C. Leslie to Clara Ford, a copy of a 1942 George Washington Carver letter to Frank Campsall and a 1944 letter to "Mr. Lambe" from the President of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States regarding a statement by Stalin that Henry Ford was one of the world's greatest industrialists. The Miscellaneous Documents and Publications subseries, 1914-1944 (2.8 cubic ft.), includes a box of Henry Ford's personal notes or jot books. The notes can be hard to read and the subjects scattered but they offer a glimpse of his day-to-day mental activity. Other materials of note include magazines and pamphlets saved by the Office of Henry Ford, 1925-1943, and daily newspaper clippings dating from 1937 to 1940. A box of reprints of the poem "Darius Green and His Flying Machine" by John Townsend Trowbridge, signed by Henry Ford also makes up part of this subseries. The Oversize Materials subseries, 1859-1947 (0.4 cubic ft., 7 oversize boxes, 6 volumes and 35 items), contains a scrapbook of clippings about Henry Ford; a series of Resolutions presented upon his death; Honorary Degrees; Awards and Citations and honorary Membership Certificates from a variety of organizations; bound financial records which include a record of vouchers issued from 1912 to 1917 for Valley Farm, Inc., cash books for Henry Ford Estates from 1914 to 1916 and Henry Ford & Son purchase records from 1916 and such varied items as a 1943 framed color lithograph of Henry Ford by Irving Bacon; a photograph of the September 2, 1945, Japanese surrender on the U.S.S. Missouri signed by Admiral Nimitz; specifications of Kilnagross Church, the Ford family ancestral church in County Cork, Ireland, and material relating to Fort McAllister, a Georgian fort owned briefly and renovated by Henry Ford. The Addendum subseries, 1938-1984 (1.4 cubic ft.), includes books of birthday greetings to Henry Ford from the boys of Camp Legion and Willow Run, among others, and also a medal from the Aviation Hall of Fame honoring Henry Ford's contributions to aviation presented in 1984.

American Defense Society. Records, 1915-1942.
Title:
Records, 1915-1942.
Records, 1915-1942, consisting of the correspondence of the Society and internal records of their activities, as well as printed material and newspaper clippings. Correspondence discusses World War I; the Society's wartime campaign to boycott German goods and stop the teaching of German in schools; the Russian Revolution and Bolshevism; sedition and disloyalty; the I.W.W.; the disloyalty of William Randolph Hearst; the case of Thomas Mooney, the labor activist who was accused of bombing a patriotic march; immigration control; general discussion of U.S. and world politics, including their support for the 1920 presidential candidacy of Warren G. Harding; and antisemitic ideas. The Society's publications included a pamphlet entitled "Protocols and World Revolution," explaining Communism by reference to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Major figures within the Society include Madison Grant, a trustee, and Charles Stewart Davison, appointed chairman in 1918 and succeeded in 1920 by Elon Huntington Hooker, after which he remained as honorary chairman. Much of the correspondence from ca. 1935-1942 is correspondence of Davison's own, not directly related to the Society. Theodore Roosevelt was the Society's honorary president, and they distributed portraits of him after his death. Their internal organizational material includes minutes, schedules, resolutions, press releases, reports from their "operators" on subversive activities, and a few photographs. Printed material includes their own publications and ephemera, as well as publications, posters and ephemera from other organizations. Most of the material comes from like-minded groups, but there are a few communist and anarchist publications. Clippings deal with American Defense Society activities and other topics of interest to the Society.

Baltimore News American collection, 1773-2006 (majority 1923-1986)
Title:
Baltimore News American collection
The "Baltimore News American" was a major daily newspaper printed under various titles and multiple forms for over 200 years. The highlights of the collection are the over one million photographic print and negative images, dating roughly from 1904 to 1986, along with the 1900 microfilm reels of newspaper content, covering a view of Baltimore and Maryland from 1799 to 1920 and 1946 to 1986. The collection encompasses images of many aspects of the human experience--people, places, and events that occurred in the city of Baltimore, the state of Maryland, and the world--as well as administrative files, one-off publications, ephemera, maps, and memorabilia, detailing the history of the newspaper and its predecessors.

Title:
Letter 1900, Oct. 5, New York City to Mrs. Anna Catherine Markham, Brooklyn / New York Journal. 1900.
Mr. Mor askes if Mrs. Markham could write something nice for the Brooklyn papers, concerning the Brooklyn Booth at the Journal Charity Bazaar. They don't want the Brooklyn people to think this is an advertising scheme by the New York Journal. They want her to say that the Journal would never use the orphans as an advertising scheme. Mr. Hearst wants anything connected with the Bazaar to be carried out in a proper manner. They are sure if some nice comments were prepared and taken to Mr. McKelway, he would use it. Also they ask if she could get Mrs. Woodruff to assist her. They also thank her and Mr. Markham for all of their help with the Bazaar.

Mr. Block wants him to write an article on "The Man with the Hoe". They want it to be how he came to write it and to include the before after changes. Mr. Block wanted to know if he like the heading he put on his poem.

1907-1983. Papers. Series I. Correspondence
Title:
1907-1983. Papers. Series I. Correspondence
Includes correspondence, with various enclosures (clippings, photographs, financial or legal documents, script proposals, etc.), from Miss Swanson's family, friends, business associates, acquaintances, and fans, spanning many notables from numerous fields of endeavor. As many relationships overlapped personal, career, business, and other interests, this series should by no means be regarded as purely personal correspondence. The earliest correspondence in the collection is from her family. Most 1920s and 1930s correspondence is film related and located in Series II., Career, especially in the United Artists subseries. The 1940s are most prominently represented in the Multiprises, Inc. subseries of Series III., Business Interests. Among the correspondents are: Roy E. Aitken, Michelle Farmer Amon, Kenneth Anger, Robert Balzer, Tallulah Bankhead, Richard Barthelmess, Earl Blackwell, Virginia Bowker, Charles Brackett, Lewis L. Bredin, Harry A. Bruno, Carol Burnett, George Bush, Francis X. Bushman, Richard E. Byrd, Walter Byron, James Cagney, Eddie Cantor, Carol Channing, Maurice Chevalier, Henri Coanda, Ronald Colman, Noel Coward, Fleur Cowles, Joan Crawford, George Cukor, Michael Curtiz, Gloria Daly, Raymond W. Daum, William M. Davey, Marion Davies, Cecil B. DeMille, Indira Devi, Thomas E. Dewey, Theodore Dreiser, William Dufty, Alan Dwan, Nelson Eddy, David Edstrom, Mamie Doud Eisenhower, Harlan Ellison, Douglas Fairbanks, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Michael Farmer, José Ferrer, Hy Gardner, George, Duke of Kent, George Gershwin, Margaret Ghika, Lillian Gish, Hubert de Givenchy, Elinor Glyn, Edmund Goulding, Gladys Griffith, Alec Guinness, Edmund Gwenn, Forrest Halsey, Oscar Hammerstein II, Helen Hayes, Edith Head, William Randolph Hearst, Ethel Helmsing, Katharine Hepburn, Conrad Hilton, Prince Franz Hohenlohe, Bob Hope, Hedda Hopper, Edward Everett Horton, L. Ron Hubbard, René Hubert, William Bradford Huie, George S. Kaufman, Edward Moore Kennedy, Harold J. Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, Joseph P. ("Sport") Ward, Clifton Webb, Orson Welles, Dan Werlé, Billy Wilder, Lois Wilson, Walter Winchell, Sam Wood, Adelaide Woodruff, Florenz Ziegfeld, Adolph Zukor, and others. Among some of the more intriguing pieces of correspondence are: a letter from a twelve year old John F. Kennedy, thanking Miss Swanson for a Christmas present; a signed, self-caricature note from George Gershwin; René Hubert's voluminous, illustrated correspondence; early papers of Herbert K. Somborn's company, Equity Pictures; and a series of mail from Kenneth Anger, which arose from a lawsuit involving his book Hollywood Babylon. There is relatively little correspondence with Joseph P. Kennedy; most of it is found in Series II., Career, and it is generally characterized by business dealings. Also included is a large group of fan mail, and fans' addresses kept on index cards, with carbons of responses, or notations that photographs or letters were sent, or perhaps a phone call was made.

Hearst and the antique : a larger context for the Hope Hygieia [videorecording] / [lecture by] Mary Levkoff ; [sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Museum].
Lecturer Mary Levkoff, curator of European painting and sculpture at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), addresses issues of taste and collecting, with a focus on the American newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst, who owned the Hope Hygieia in the mid-1900s. The re-restoration of the Hope Hygieia at the Getty Villa offered an opportunity to explore the modern history of this ancient statue, from the time it was excavated in 1797 to the present.

Letter 1900, Nov. 1, New York City to Mr. Edwin Markham, Staten Island / New York Journal. 1900.
Mr. Block writes to Mr. Markham because he doesn't his telegram about the newspaper blunders. He would like to talk to him about it, before he speaks to Mr. Hearst. The announcement, in McClure's magazine, said that either McClure or Doubleday were publishing a book by Mr. Markham. The books was entitled "The Sower, and other poems". He hasn't seen a copy of the book yet. If it is the same poem, then the book would appear before they could change their Thanksgiving issue. Also if it is the same poem, then we could ask the publisher to hold back the book until we printed the poem first. If this was impossible for them, then they would not be able to print it because it came out in book form.He says that the Christmas poem is only worth $60.00 and should be shorter. He also would like Mr. Markham to write a poem for the new century issue. He suggest that could be one about prophecy of the conditions that will exist in the year 2000. also like to meet with him this week.

Title:
Pigs in clover [graphic] / drawn by Milo Usi. 1932.
Political cartoon regarding the Democratic Party's effort to regain the presidency during the U.S. presidential campaign of 1932. President Herbert Hoover is shown in a clover field holding a bushel of corn surrounded by fat, happy and colorful pigs. On the backside of one of the pigs are the words "30 cents." The clover field is surrounded by a fence. On the other side of the fence, several monotoned beige pigs, shedding tears, struggle to get over the fence and into the clover field. Behind the beige pigs are four members of the Democratic Party, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt, William Randolph Hearst, and two unidentified men. One of the unidentified men holds a rake and scratches his head (possibly William Gibbs McAdoo).

Title:
Papers of James Augustin Brown Scherer, 1916-1943 (bulk 1916-1918)
The bulk of the collection centers on Scherer's work with the Council of National Defense during the First World War. There are two and half boxes of documents which had been previously collected in two large volumes. The original arrangement (by date) has been retained for both collections (labeled "Bulletins" and "General Letters," respectively) in cataloged form. The "General Letters" collection is the most extensive; it comprises the entirety of Box 2 and the first half of Box 3. In some cases - due to the similarity of their subject material - two or more consecutive listings in the index have been cataloged together in one folder. There are two smaller collections labeled "Noteworthy Activities Undertaken by State Councils" and "I.C.A. Circulars." These two smaller document collections have their own folders in Box 3. All four contain an index - those for the two still-bound collections list the bulletins in the reverse order of their appearance. The two large volumes have been cataloged in the order listed in their indexes. The collection also has one box of semi-cataloged manuscripts, correspondence, and ephemera. In addition to directives on the formation of community-level patriotic organizations and meetings, Americanization programs, and fuel and food conservation for the war effort, the box also contains Scherer's travel itinerary from his tour of State Councils of National Defense early in the war. The box also contains a bevy of newspaper clippings covering Scherer's criticism of the Hearst newspaper syndicate and his resignation following an order from the Secretary of War to end his criticism. Most of the unbound council of National Defense documents are stamped "For Information Only; No Action Desired" - all dated after Scherer had stepped down. The collection"s ephemera includes a number of Council of National Defense pamphlets, advertisements, and news clippings. Subjects in the collection include: African-Americans; Americanization; American Red Cross; liberty bonds; military training camps; Newton Baker; patriotism; rationing; sedition; preventive medicine, U.S. Department of Agriculture; World War I propaganda; war risk insurance; and William Randolph Hearst.

When former President Harry S. Truman began writing his memoirs, he borrowed from his sister, Mary Jane Truman, letters that he wrote to her from 1945 to 1948. Mr. Truman's staff made photocopies of the letters and returned the originals to Miss Truman. Miss Truman then destroyed the original letters. When the Truman Library accessioned Mr. Truman's personal papers, the photocopies of the letters were included as part of those papers, and are now the only known copy of the letters. Some of the letters contain notes written by Mr. Truman and his assistants who worked on the memoirs.

They inform Mr. Markham that they are unable to pay more than $60.00 for any poem, without consulting Mr. Hearst. Mr. Hearst is currently out of town. They hope that he will understand and not let this opportunity slip by for financial reasons. They still have one of his poems, "The Reaper", which they will soon print and pay at the same rate. But the Easter poem, they would like it not to run so long so, it would not take up so much of time.
