Claude Gernade Bowers (1879-1958) was born in Westfield, Indiana. He married Sybil McCaslin Bowers in 1911 and had a daughter. Bowers was the editorial writer for newspapers in Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Fort Wayne, and New York, and was the author of several books, including "Jefferson and Hamilton: The Struggle for Democracy in America" and "The Tragic Era: The Revolution after Lincoln." He was appointed as ambassador to Spain from 1933-1939 and then to Chile from 1939-1953. After 1953 he and Sybil settled in New York.
