Edward Bellamy was born in Massachusetts and was working as a journalist in 1888 when he published his most famous work, "Looking Backward: 2000-1887," a popular utopian romance. Bellamy devoted his life to promoting the ideas of non-revolutionary socialist reform through the Nationalist Party and his journal, THE NEW NATION. In 1897 Bellamy penned a theoretical sequel to "Looking Backward," entitled "Equality."

Edward Bellamy was a 19th century American novelist and social thinker. After a few undistinguished novels, Bellamy struck a chord in 1888 with Looking backward, a utopian saga set in the future. It became one of the best-selling books of the century, with an indisputable impact on society and politics, inspiring discussion groups, political platforms, social reform, and countless literary successors.
