James Logan, colonial statesman and scholar, became William Penn's secretary and emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1699.
Logan was later appointed Penn's financial agent in the colony and adviser for his descendants. During the next forty years, he held various positions in the colonial government including secretary of the province, clerk of the Provincial Council, and numerous other executive and judicial posts. Logan also amassed a fortune in land investment and in trade with the Indians. He was also interested in science and mathematics. He contributed to the field of botany by describing the fertizilazation of corn by pollen.

Logan-Fisher-Fox family papers, 1703-1940.
Title:
Logan-Fisher-Fox family papers, 1703-1940.
The Logan-Fisher-Fox collection focuses on the members of three prominent Philadelphia Quaker families. The material offers a study of the minds and lifestyles of several generations of active members of the Society of Friends and is a valuable source of information on family life, highlighting the position of women in the family. There is much correspondence, especially in William Logan's and Thomas Fisher's papers, concerning trans-Atlantic trade and the Anglo-American Quaker community. The collection also documents the families' involvement in the anti-slavery movement, Indian relief efforts and educational projects involving both Indians and African Americans. The Logan section concerns James Logan, Secretary to William Penn, his eldest son, William and William's son, William Jr., an apothecary apprentice of Dr. Joseph Fry and medical student. William Logan's correspondence (approximately 200 items) reflect Quaker perspectives from both sides of the Atlantic on the growing conflicts between Great Britain and her colonies. Of additional interest is correspondence, 1763-1800, concerning the courtship and marriage of Sally Portsmouth and William Logan, Jr., which was discouraged by his family, and the guardianship of William Portsmouth Logan, their child, after the death of his father. The Fisher section includes 500 items of the Post-Revolutionary correspondence of Thomas Fisher, merchant and brewer, 1780-1810. In addition to business concerns Thomas Fisher's correspondence documents his active role in the formation of Westtown, a Quaker boarding school, his views on the Non-importation Agreement and free trade, and his interest in the education of Indians and the abolition of slavery. The William Logan Fisher papers document his apprenticeship in a counting house, and his later whaling business through extensive family correspondence. They are particularly useful for their commentary on the economy, politics, slavery and abolition. Also included here are the manuscripts of Sarah Lindley Fisher, second wife of William Logan Fisher, Elizabeth R. Fisher and Mary Fisher Fox important for their depiction of the life of the 19th century wife and mother. The Fox section focuses on the letters of Samuel and George to their brother Joseph M. Fox. Both Samuel and George graduated from medical school, but Samuel left the profession in 1828 to work in his father-in-law's New York counting house. Included in this section is a small group of Lindley family material, the bulk of which concerns Jacob Lidley, a missionary to the Indians. The Miscellaneous section includes photographs, newspaper clippings and other printed material.

Title:
At a council held at Edward [unreadable] 1712 May 19.
Photostat of a document purportedly by James Logan giving an account of a meeting. The document illustrates 34 wampum belts, presented by the Delaware Indian delegation, and gives their meanings. The place where the meeting was held appears to start with Edward or Edwards, but the remainder of the word is not decipherable. The council was presumably held somewhere near Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Other individuals attending the meeting included Edward Shippen, Richard Hill, and other members of the government. Also included with the Photostats are two letters from 1942 between Julian P. Boyd, who was a librarian at Princeton, Edwin K. Burnett, and George G. Heye. Their letters discuss the manuscript and the whereabouts of the wampum belts mentioned in the manuscript. Boyd states that the original manuscript may have been purchased earlier that year by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

Logan family papers, Bulk, 1670-1872, 1638-1964
Title:
Logan family papers Bulk, 1670-1872 1638-1964
The Logan family was a prominent Philadelphia family dating back to 1699, when James Logan, the family patriarch, arrived in Philadelphia to serve as the first secretary of the Pennsylvania colony. Through work in agriculture and politics, Logan and his descendants were intimately involved in the development of the Pennsylvania colony and, later, the fledging United States. James Logan's prominence resulted in connections, both professional and familial, with other prominent colonial families, including the Norris and Dickinson families. The Logan family papers, 1638-1964 (bulk 1670-1872), documents James Logan’s personal and professional life, as well as that of several generations of his descendents. There are papers documenting the lives of his son William, his grandson George Logan, his great-grandsons Albanus Charles Logan and Algernon Sydney Logan, and the subsequent relationships with the Dickinson and Norris families. John Dickinson, who married one of James Logan's descendents, is well documented in this collection as are his activities with the Pennsylvania and Delaware governments and his legal practice. This collection is rich in the history of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Delaware, the formation of the colony of Pennsylvania, the relationship of early colonials with the Native Americans, the bid for independence and the later formation of the United States of America. Included in the papers are correspondence, legal records, estate records, financial records, land and property records, diaries, and writings. Not only are prominent political figures (James Logan, George Logan, and John Dickinson) well documented in this collection, but women are also well documented, largely thanks to Deborah Norris Logan who kept a diary for most of her adult life. Her diaries and letters and those of some of her female relations reveal a glimpse into the lives of educated and prominent women in the Philadelphia area during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Burd-Shippen Papers, 1708-1792
Title:
Burd-Shippen Papers 1708-1792
James Burd (1726-1793) was well-known in colonial Pennsylvania through his role in the French and Indian War, as well as his connections to many of the colony's leading families (most notably the Shippen family). Initially starting out as a merchant in Philadelphia, Burd became increasingly involved with colonial affairs after moving to Lancaster County with his family in 1752. It would be on the frontier where Burd would make his mark first as a soldier, and later as a magistrate. The Burd-Shippen Papers consist mainly of letters and business documents sent to James Burd, with the bulk of the collection relating to the French and Indian War, 1754-1763, in which Burd served as an officer commanding troops at Fort Augusta and elsewhere. The 2.5 linear feet in the collection reflects all aspects of Burd's life in Pennsylvania as a merchant, soldier, and magistrate; as well as his involvement with the Shippen family professionally and personally. Intermixed with items sent to Burd are receipts to his wife Sarah Shippen Burd, and correspondence between Edward Shippen and James Hamilton regarding land matters and Indian affairs in Lancaster.

John Leacock commonplace book, 1768-1781
Title:
John Leacock commonplace book 1768-1781
Having made his fortune as a goldsmith and silversmith, John Leacock (1729-1802) became one of Philadelphia's most energetic entrepreneurs in viticulture and a playwright and parodist in the cause of American Independence. Despite bearing the title, "Observations, Experiments etc. extracted from the respecting farming, gardening, etc.," the notebook kept by the silversmith, viticulturist, and writer, John Leacock, is actually a combination of commonplace book, notebook, and receipt book. Consisting of 58 folio pages, the book contains a hodgepodge of entries reflecting Leacock's varied interests from 1768 through at least 1781, including not only material copied from other sources on viticulture, agriculture, engraving and etching, but medicinal and culinary receipts and two original poems, a "Song [of] the Stamp Act" and "A parody on the Tempest, by R. H. Esq." It also mentions diet drinks made by James Logan and Cadwallader Evans. Philosophical Transactions

Franklin-Bache Papers, 1707-1799
Title:
Franklin-Bache Papers 1707-1799
Containing over 4 linear feet of letters and documents, the Franklin-Bache Papers comprises the second largest collection of letters and documents relating to Benjamin Franklin in the APS Library. Although the scope of the collection is broad, including materials from the time of Franklin's arrival in Philadelphia to his death, the heart of the collection documents the period of Franklin's ministry in France (1776-1785) and his diplomatic efforts to win financial and military support for the revolutionary cause, as well as less intensive coverage of his ministry in England before the Revolution. Franklin's correspondence with American and French officials, financiers (personal and otherwise), and savants provides tantalizing details on the social context of Franklin's ministry in France, his intellectual life, and his growing celebrity. Much of the correspondence documents the efforts to convince French officials early in the war to support the American cause, but there is valuable material relating to the peace negotiations as well. The collection is equally rich in personal correspondence, including a rich set of letters from Mary Stevenson Hewson, Georgiana Shipley, Catherine Ray Greene, Jane Mecom, Deborah Franklin, and a number of Franklin's other relatives. The collection is arranged chronologically.

Albert Cook Myers Historical Collection: William Penn papers, 1645-1960
Title:
Albert Cook Myers Historical Collection: William Penn papers 1645-1960
Albert Cook Myers (1874-1960) was a Pennsylvania historian, who dedicated his life’s work to the identification, study and organization of William Penn’s published writings and personal papers. Beginning in 1910, after securing an endorsement from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, he set out to publish: “The Complete Works of William Penn.” All told, Myers devoted fifty years of his life to this project. Though his publication goals were never realized, he assembled a massive and notable body of information about William Penn. To complete his studies, Myers travelled abroad and throughout the United States. As a result of his efforts, he came to be regarded as an expert on the topic and often spoke publicly on the life and times of William Penn. The Albert Cook Myers research collection of William Penn materials contains the information gathered by Myers in his pursuit to thoroughly research and publish a volume documenting the complete writings of William Penn. Researchers will find Myers' notes, transcriptions, photocopies of documents, newspaper clippings, various author articles, first editions and other early editions of Penn's works, picture postcards of places related to Penn, and photos and original manuscript material. The bulk of the collection is "The Manuscript" series, which focuses on Myer's work on Penn's own writings. Researchers should be aware that the bulk of the collection is Myers' notes and only a small portion is original manuscript material related to Penn. The collection spans the dates of 1645 to 1960, however, the bulk of the material was collected and created by Myers from 1910 to 1960.

Penn family papers, Bulk, 1629-1834, 1592-1960
Title:
Penn family papers Bulk, 1629-1834 1592-1960
The British colony of Pennsylvania was given to William Penn (1644-1718) in 1681 by Charles II of England in repayment of a debt owed his father, Sir Admiral William Penn (1621-1670). Under Penn's directive, Pennsylvania was settled by Quakers escaping religious torment in England and other European nations. Three generations of Penn descendents held proprietorship of the colony until the American Revolution, when the family was stripped of all but its privately held shares of land. The Penn family papers house the personal and governmental records of William Penn, the proprietor of Pennsylvania, and his family. This collection, which dates from 1592 to 1960 (bulk of materials dating 1629 to 1834), consists primarily of correspondence, legal records, governmental records, surveys, deeds, grants, receipts, and account books; there are also 19th and 20th century auction catalogs and other secondary materials. This collection documents the creation of the Pennsylvania colony through records created by William Penn and his associates. The records continue beyond this and document the development of the colony through the records of Penn's descendants. These records reveal valuable insights into Penn's relations with American Indians, the Pennsylvania/Maryland border dispute, Pennsylvania's government framework, as well private correspondence between family members and close associates.

These records also provide valuable insights into Penn's relations with American Indians, the Pennsylvania/Maryland border dispute, government framework, as well private correspondence between family members and close associates. The Penn family papers at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania comprise the most extensive and comprehensive collection of materials related to the Penn family and the creation of the Pennsylvania colony. It is an invaluable resource for studying the founding and development of the Pennsylvania colony, early American colonial history and the Penn family. The Penn family papers have a tumultuous history, and were donated or purchased in small accessions over a long period of time (for more information, see Nicholas B. Wainwright, "The Penn Collection," The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography 87, no. 4 (October, 1963): 393-419). In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, documents were bound together in large volumes based on the source of materials (i.e. donor) and the genre (e.g. "Correspondence"). The series and the titles in this finding aid reflect as closely as possible these groupings. This collection is arranged into ten series: "I. Correspondence, 1667-1855," "II. William Penn, 1667-1944," "III. Penn family members, 1654-1866," "IV. Government records, 1687-1790," "V. Land grants, surveys and deeds, 1639-1896," "VI. Penn-Physick manuscripts, 1676-1811," "VII. Penn v. Baltimore, 1606-1834," "VIII. Other legal cases, 1672-1869," "IX. Penn manuscripts, 1592-1910," and "X. Auction catalogs and secondary materials, 1812-1960." The first series, "I. Correspondence, 1667-1855" includes official and private correspondence associated with William Penn, his family members or associates. The second series, "II. William Penn, 1667-1944" includes Penn's financial records, diaries, correspondence, last will and testament, marriage certificate from his second marriage to Hannah Callowhill, and secondary materials such as memorials. The third series, "III. Penn family members, 1654-1866" includes correspondence and financial records associated with specific family members, aside from William Penn (1644-1718). The most represented family members include Sir Admiral William Penn (1621-1671), John Penn (1699/1700-1746), and Thomas Penn (1701/2-1775). The fourth series, "IV. Government records, 1687-1790" includes materials related to the creation and governance of the Pennsylvania colony. This includes treaties and conferences with American Indians (see also series "IX. Penn manuscripts"), Acts of Assembly and financial records. There are a number of "Pennsylvania journals," 1701-1779, which are accounts of lands and quitrents. The fifth series, "V. Land grants, surveys and deeds, 1639-1896" includes records related to the lands owned or administered by the Penn family. The sixth series, "VI. Penn-Physick manuscripts, 1676-1811" includes the collection of manuscripts previously held by Edmund Physick, "Keeper of the Great Seal" for the Penn family. Physick managed the Penn properties and interests in the colonies for half a century. These records include correspondence, financial records, lecture notes, and legal records. The seventh series, "VII. Penn v. Baltimore, 1606-1834" includes the extensive records produced over the border dispute between William Penn and Lord Baltimore (Cecilius "Cecil" Calvert). These records include court documents and correspondence. The eighth series, "VIII. Other legal cases, 1672-1869" includes court documents, the bulk of which refer to the Penn v. Ford case. A dispute arose between William Penn and the family of Philip Ford, to whom Penn had temporarily signed over the deed to Pennsylvania while fighting charges of treason. During this time the treason charges were dropped and Ford passed away, leaving in his will the interests of Pennsylvania to his family, unless Penn paid the exorbitant sum of ℗Đ11,000. This case was eventually resolved with Penn paying ℗Đ7,600 to the Ford family. This series also includes a letter-book of attorney John F. Mifflin, as well as records related to various other cases. The ninth series, "IX. Penn manuscripts, 1592-1910" includes miscellaneous items and collections from various sources. The Penn-Forbes papers, collected by Stewart Forbes, were purchased by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in 1882, and contain an extraordinary group of letters from Admiral Penn and the Founder, as well as copies of items from within this collection and related materials at other repositories. The Penn-Justice papers, collected by George M. Justice, relate to land warrants, surveys, financial accounts with the Penns, and political and domestic affairs, 1769-1804. The Tempsford Hall papers are a miscellaneous group of Penn and related family papers gathered or retained by the Stuart family, descendants of William Penn through Thomas Penn's youngest daughter, Sophia Margaretta Juliana Penn, who married William Stuart, archbishop of Armagh, Anglican primate of Ireland. For a number of years the collection was kept at Tempsford Hall, Bedfordshire, one of the Stuart family houses. The collection was purchased from a Stuart family descendant in 1968 with the Historical Society of Pennsylvania's Gratz Fund. The final series, "X. Auction catalogs and secondary materials, 1812-1960" includes records related to the sale of Penn materials at auction and Penn family history. Bibliography: Wainwright, Nicholas B.
