Two official letterbooks, chiefly 1814-1828, containing copies of incoming and outgoing correspondence, memoranda, accounts, and reports, relating to the military career and activities of Major-General Brown, especially his participation in various battles of the War of 1812 around Niagara, Fort Erie, and Lake Ontario; and as commander of the Division of the North, with headquarters at Brownville, N.Y. Includes material on general military matters, troop movements, army reorganization, establishment of forts and other military construction, and relations with the Indians, namely a "Memorandum of the Tribes of Indians in the North-West...." with various statistics on the tribes and their ways of life. A third volume entitled "Memorandum of occurrences and some important facts attending the Campaign on the Niagara in 1814" contains memoranda and copies of correspondence relating to the Battle of Lundy's Lane in which Brown figured prominently. Correspondents include John Armstrong, James Barbour, John C. Calhoun, Isaac Chauncey, De Witt Clinton, William Harris Crawford, Alexander James Dallas, Edmund Pendleton Gaines, George Graham, George Izard, Andrew Jackson, Alexander Macomb, James Monroe, Daniel Parker, and Winfield Scott.

Title: Papers, 1814-1825.

Collection consists of two undated engravings of Brown, a letter, and a memorandum bound in pink ribbon. The letter is addressed to the Secretary of the Navy and was written in Brown's capacity as Commander. The full title of the memorandum booklet is "Memoranda of occurences and some important facts attending the Campaign on the Niagara." Brown narrates the events of the campaign. There are verified copies of major communications during the campaign, including messages from J.C. Calhoun, James Monroe, General Ripley, and others. Of special interest is a sort of appendix consisting of "An Estimate of the British Regular Troops in Upper Canada, July 1, 1814. With a view of their distribution." It is a detailed look at early nineteenth century military conflicts.

In a lengthy letter marked "Confidential" Brown discusses the continuing Presidency of James Monroe and the anticipated outcome of the election of 1824. He mentions Smith Thompson and John Quincy Adams whom he predicts will never become president. The election will fall to Calhoun or Crawford. Clinton will be elected governor of New York and will continue with a canal from the Hudson to the Great Lakes. The Missouri question will "agitate the states" but "not sever the union" as providence has willed the people together and the "national establishment will be preserved." He refers to a "base and infamous" article reporting a conversation between New York Chief Justice Ambrose Spencer and himself and discusses the nomination of [John?] Canfield [Spencer?] to the Senate which despite controversy will be confirmed and gives advice on the political situation in Jefferson County, New York. He wishes to see Sterling.

Beginning with the copy of a letter dated Williamsville, April 17, 1814, details of forces are given and an attack on Fort Erie urged, followed by all the correspondence between General Jacob Brown, Com. Chauncey, Gaines, Scott, etc., leading up to the capture of Fort Erie. Brown's announcement of the victory over Gen. Riall at Chippewa is found under date of July 6, 1814, and the defeat of Gen. Drummond with a superior force (July 25) at the Battle of Lundy's Lane is found under date of July 29th in a communication by his aide, who says Gen. Brown is suffering from wounds received there. The last entry is dated August 20, 1814.

Of note in the correspondence are Maj. Gen. Brown's letters after the battles of Chippawa, Ontario in July 1813 and Lundy's Lane, Ontario, 25 July 1814 where he was wounded twice. Brown also led troops and New York militia into battle at Sackett's Harbor and captured Fort Erie in 1813.
