Krockow, Alida, Grä̈fin von, 1856-1940. Countess Alida von Krockow letters to publishers [manuscript], 1893-1904.
Title:
Countess Alida von Krockow letters to publishers [manuscript], 1893-1904.
In a letter, 1893 Jan. 2, von Krockow writes Houghton Mifflin a lengthy review of the novel "Merlin" (1892) by Paul Heyse. She writes: "Merlin, in short, was for many years the author's mental diary, and unless his present intention not to write his memoirs be given up, the literary student will hardly come into possession of a better guide through certain circumstances of Herr Heyse's literary life than is this romance. It fills a place among his books corresponding to that which "The Mill on the Floss" fills among the writings of George Eliot." She continues to recount most of the plot of the novel. In a 1904 letter to the editor of "The Youth's Companion," [M. A. deWolfe Howe?] von Krockow writes, "I have made a sketch illustrative of 'Whitsuntide Customs in Germany' and have given it to a young artist who is a pupil of Mr. Gibson, to cast into a design fit to serve as an illustration, and will submit the same to you within a few days."

Title:
Countess Alida von Krockow letters to publishers [manuscript], 1893-1904.
The collection contains the manuscript of p. 49, of "American characters in German novels." Discusses American types represented in German Literature, particularly the character of the young girl. The collection also contains p. 30 of an untitled essay (last page only). First line: "...take to be great artists, Richard Wagner and Hans Markart, are just the ontrary kind of men to Durer, are sybaritic baggars and self-idolizing blasphemers." Disucsses the characters of various artists. In a letter, 1893 Jan 2, von Krockow writes Houghton Mifflin a lengthy review of the novel "Merlin" (1892) by Paul Heyse.

Title:
Oliver La Farge Collection, 1886-1966 (bulk 1924-1966).
Holograph and typescript works make up the majority of the Oliver La Farge Collection, 1886-1966 (bulk 1924-1966), supplemented by a great deal of personal and professional correspondence and a variety of works by other authors. The Works Series contains a large number of La Farge's creative works. Some of the titles represented include The American Indian, As Long As the Grass Shall Grow, "Miss Euphemia's Nose," A Pictorial History of the American Indian, Santa Eulalia, "The Senior Assistant," "Trick or Treat," and a volume of short stories, The Door in the Wall, published posthumously. Also present are almost 1400 index cards used to create a Mayan vocabulary index, as well as several notebooks and articles on the Mayan language and Central American linguistics in general. The Correspondence Series is divided into incoming and outgoing subseries. Exhanges of letters can frequently be traced between the two subseries, and a fair amount of correspondence occurred between La Farge and the Artists' and Writers' Press; John Collier, Commissioner of Indian Affairs; Letitia Evans Frank, associate on the Tucson Festival of Arts; Houghton Mifflin Co.; literary agents Elsie McKeogh and Marie Rodell; friend Linton Satterthwaite; and others. The Financial, Legal, and Personal Papers Series contains a variety of financial statements from publishers and agents, a collection of military-related documentation, and research notes for scholarly and fictional works. Also present are a large collection of items relating to the Hopi Indian tribes and a passport. The Third-Party Works and Correspondence Series is divided into two subseries. The works comprise articles, reviews, short stories, and other creative works by authors other than La Farge, including The Great Sioux Uprising by Chester Oehler and Northern Central America with a Trip to the Highland Anahuac: Travels and Studies of the Years, 1888-1895 (1897) by Carl Sapper. The correspondence contains a moderate amount of correspondence between friends and associates of La Farge and frequently concerns him or his work. Two early letters by La Farge's father are dated 1886.

Sexton, Anne, 1928-1974. Anne Sexton Papers, 1912-1996, (bulk 1953-1974).
Title:
Anne Sexton Papers, 1912-1996, (bulk 1953-1974).
Manuscripts, correspondence, financial records, contracts with her publishers, notes from her presentations, and samples of her students' poetry comprise the bulk of the Anne Sexton Papers, 1912-1996 (bulk 1953-1974). The collection is organized into four series, with materials arranged alphabetically by title or author. The papers thoroughly explore Sexton's writing career from her earliest poems to the materials published after her death. Working copies of all the major collections of verse are included, as are multiple versions of her best known play, Mercy Street. Individual poems demonstrate Sexton's editing methods, as do various published and unpublished short stories. Diaries, interviews, articles, and materials from her many presentations fill out the Works series. Correspondence includes a variety of Sexton's personal and business correspondence. There is a large quantity of correspondence with colleges and institutions requesting readings or Sexton's attendence at various functions, as well as communication between Sexton and magazines, her publishers, fellow poets, students, friends, and family. Of particular note are letters between Sexton and Lois Amos, Michael Bearpark, Saul Bellow, Michael Benedikt, Elizabeth Bishop, Louise Conant, Morton Courier, Dorianne Goetz, Anthony Hecht, Houghton, Mifflin and Company, The Hudson Review, Barbara Kevles, Maxine Kumin, Philip Legler, Robert Lowell, George MacBeth, Jack McCarthy, John Mood, Marianne Moore, The New Yorker, Dennis O'Brien, Tillie Olsen, Oxford University Press, Sylvia Plath, Al Poulin, Alfred Sexton, Dick Sherwood, Robin Skelton, Alice Smith, William Snodgrass, George Starbuck, Brian Sweeney, John Updike, Anne Wilder, and James Wright. The remainder of the material is composed of drafts of other authors' works, fan mail sent to Sexton, school memorabilia, photographs of Sexton and others, a notebook of newspaper clippings about Sexton kept by Alice Smith, a letter from William Wallace Denslow to Arthur Staples in 1912, and a set of page proofs for a German translation of Anne Sexton: A Self-Portrait in Letters, published in 1996. At the time of their acquisition by the Ransom Center, some of the Sexton materials were closed for use. The restrictions were lifted in 2011 and the materials then housed and described as Series IV, Formerly closed materials, were made available. Included in these materials are typescript drafts of early works, correspondence, four journals containing detailed information on Sexton's therapy sessions, and audio tapes of therapy sessions.
