Richard Malcolm Johnston papers, 1884-1893.

This collection includes two letters from Richard Malcolm Johnston to J.C. Derby, 1884, and Julius Cawein, 1893. Both letters concern poetry. The collection also contains a memorial by Johnston on the death of Edward Adam Soulard, 1880. Johnston and Soulard were friends from Sparta, Georgia.

Richard Malcolm Johnston was an author, lawyer, and educator. He was born near Pawellton, Georgia on "Oak Grove" plantation. He was law partners with Eli W. Baxter in Sparta, Georgia. In 1844, Johnston married Mary Frances Mansfield. He was elected chair of rhetoric and belles-lettres at the University of Georgia in 1857; he remained in Athens until 1861.
