Title:
California land grant research materials for William W. Clary, 1938.

Also included are two sets of research notes (one is included in a letter) on land acquisitions and ownership in Mexican California from Los Angeles to San Diego Counties. One set of notes focuses on land litigation in San Gabriel in the 1820s, with information from the California Archives, the Board of Harbor Commissioners, and various secondary sources on the San Gabriel river and San Pedro Bay. The other set of notes includes references to land owned by Juan Jose Nieto and Juan Jose Dominguez. Carbon copies, some with handwritten notes.

Castaneda, Carlos, 1931-1998. Una realidade aparte, circa 1971.
Title:
Una realidade aparte, circa 1971.
Typescript (264 p.) of a Spanish version of A Separate Reality with corrections and annotations in several different hands. The title portion of the first page has been torn off. A Separate Reality was originally written in Spanish, then translated into English for U.S. publication and then re-translated back into Spanish by Juan Tovar. One researcher, Richard De Mille, who extensively investigated Castaneda and his work, suspected, on the basis of Tovar's translation, that the work had not originally been composed in Spanish. This typescript puts that theory into question.

Inventory of the Everette B. Long Papers 1949-1981
Title:
Inventory of the Everette B. Long Papers 1949-1981
Everette Beach Long, one of America's foremost experts on the Civil War, was born on 24 October 1919, in Whitehall, Wisconsin to Cecil Everettee and Florence (Beach) Long. He attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio from 1937 to 1939 and Northwestern University from 1939 to 1941. In 1942, E. B. Long married Barbara Conzelman. Devoting himself to historical research and teaching, and a prolific writer of historical works focusing on the American Civil War, Long was the director of research for Doubleday's multi-volume , written by Bruce Catton from 1955 to 1965. He was a member of the advisory council of the National Civil War Centennial Commission. Long was a member of the Chicago Civil War Round Table and served as its president from 1955 to 1956. He was a member of the Friends of the Chicago Public Library and was its president in 1960. Long died on 31 March 1981 in Chicago, Illinois, the day after the publication of his last work, . The E. B. Long Papers (1949-1981) consist of thirty-four boxes (40 linear ft), including: personal correspondence, manuscripts by Long and others, articles, booklets, essays, clippings, photocopies, research notes, maps, brochures, and photographs. While most of the materials in this collection are dated in the twentieth century, there are several original Civil War documents of the nineteenth century. Of further interest are the drafts of Allan Nevins's , which were edited by E. B. Long, and the nine long index boxes of Long's research notes on the Civil War. The papers have been divided into the following categories: personal correspondence, manuscripts by Long, manuscripts by others, general files covering a wide range of subjects, drafts of Allan Nevins' , research notes on the Civil War, index card files of articles, and miscellaneous volumes of clippings. The correspondence is arranged both chronologically for general correspondence and alphabetically for correspondence with specific individuals, resulting in some overlapping of dates. Correspondents include Bruce Catton, the Civil War Round Table, Doubleday and Company, Allan Nevins, Lowell Reedinbaugh, and John Y. Simon. Inventory of the Samuel Erson Asbury Papers Texas MSS 00044., 1872-1960
Title:
Inventory of the Samuel Erson Asbury Papers 1872-1960
Educated and professionally employed as an agricultural chemist and researcher in fertilizer and feeds, Samuel Erson Asbury's fame rests primarily with his extensive research into Texas history, particularly his discovery of little known primary resources regarding the Texas Revolution, including those concerning Jonas Harrison, John A. Williams, and the journal of Juan Nepomuceno Almonte. Samuel Erson Asbury was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on September 26, 1872, the son of Felicia Swan (Woodward) and Sidney Monroe Asbury. In 1889, Asbury enrolled in North Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical College in Raleigh, receiving his B.S. in chemistry in 1893. Employed as an instructor at the college, Asbury earned his M.S. by 1896. Between 1895 and 1904, Asbury worked alternately with the North Carolina Experiment Station, the State Chemist's office in Richmond, Virginia, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, and the State Chemist of Tennessee. On November 1, 1904 he accepted a position in College Station, Tex., as Assistant State Chemist with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station on the campus of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. From 1905 to 1915 his work required him to travel throughout East Texas as a fertilizer inspector for Dr. G. S. Frap, the State Chemist. During his business trips, Asbury spent his spare time getting acquainted with the local old-timers, many of them former participants in the Texas Revolution, Civil War, and/or the Reconstruction. Asbury's chief historical interest lay in the Texas Revolution, and he spent much of his time writing an opera, or musical-drama review to illustrate it. Asbury spent the remainder of his career with the experiment station employed in the analysis of fertilizer and feed until his retirement in 1945. Samuel Erson Asbury died in Bryan, Tex. on January 10, 1960 at the age of 89. The Samuel Erson Asbury Papers consist of research materials, correspondence, mainly original contemporary letters and copies of the older correspondence, Asbury's writings and copies of state and national documents, held in eight boxes and one map case drawer occupying approximately twelve linear feet of shelf space. Asbury's broad range of interests is reflected in the variety of topics contained in these papers. Foremost among them are the files of correspondence, the older materials chiefly copies, copies of historical documents, articles and research notes concerning various aspects of Texas history. Also included in the Asbury papers are: articles, short stories, essays, plays, poetry, and a Texas Revolution opera written by Asbury; research notes and correspondence on the cultivation of roses and the growing of plants without soil; articles written about Asbury; correspondence with family members; general correspondence; and photographs of Asbury, his family and friends, and North Carolina A&M College.

Catholic Church. [Tonale Missae].
Title:
[Tonale Missae].
Fragment of a Tonale, or Tonary, in this case for the Mass, arranged in order according to the modes and psalm tone terminations of Gregorian chant. Fol. 1r-4v contain part of the eighth mode of a tonary, fol. 5r-v contains seventh-mode antiphons. It is clear from the contents of the manuscript that the order of the first two bifolia has been reversed. Fol. 5 has been sliced in two, both horizontally and vertically, then stuck back together. Fol. 6 is extremely discolored and seems to be a stray leaf from an antiphoner; it probably did not originally belong with the tonary leaves. All of the folios appear to have been used in binding another manuscript. German notes on modern endpaper binding and transcriptions of text in a German hand inserted throughout.

Notable chapter subjects include Sam Brannan's childhood (Ch. 1); Joseph Smith and Mormonism (Ch. 2); Lola Montez (Ch. 4); Gold Rush in California (Ch. 4 & 5); Sam Brannan vs. Central Pacific Railroad (the Big Four including Collis Huntington) court case (Ch. 5); Brannan's divorce (Ch. 6); Mexico territory issues (Ch. 7); and the death of Sam Brannan (Ch. 7). William Randel's research notes have been organized according to their original order as received by the cataloger. The William Randel Research Papers also contain correspondence from and to Randel by various libraries, historical societies, publishers, television and movie companies, and his literary agent, Bertha Klausner. The correspondence covers a variety of subject matters such as Randel's requests for information on Brannan from different institutions; business letters that reveal Randel's book and television proposals; and the rejection of Randel's proposals by publishers and production studios. The bulk of the collection's correspondence consists of letters to and from various libraries and research facilities. These include The Huntington, New York Historical Society, Louisiana State Library, Tulane University Library, UCLA Special Collections, and the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley. The correspondence is organized chronologically and it should be noted that some folders contain letters written by William Randel and their corresponding return correspondence. A portion of the collection consists of Randel's unfinished manuscripts for his book on Samuel Brannan. The collection contains several different versions and revisions of the story of Brannan. Titles include "The Sam Brannan Story," "Sam Brannan Saga," and "A Thousand A Day." The manuscripts are organized according to their respective titles. Each manuscript is about the life of Sam Brannan. The photographs in the collection consist of photographs of Brannan, photographs of locations and residences related to Brannan, and pictures of artwork associated with Brannan. The collection also contains slides of material associated with Brannan and the city of Calistoga, and also included in the collection are microfilm rolls that contain Randel's research materials on Brannan. The ephemera contains photocopies of articles, newspaper clippings, and several publications; also arranged chronologically.
